You don't have a microwave???

That is right, I don't have a microwave. I have not had one for a few years now. I always find it funny when people learn this about me and they gasp, "how can you live without a microwave?" or, "how do you reheat your food?" Do you have a microwave? What kind of appliance could you never live without or what can't you imagine not having in your life?

I have an old microwave that my grandchildren use to heat their milk or coffee when they come to visit. I use the rage or a small electric oven to do my cooking. i suppose the appliance I find more useful although It´s in my automatic pilot nd don´t think of it is the fridge (freezer included).

The fridge is just so important, I can't imagine not having the whole unit. To not be able to keep anything cold would just be terrible. I know I could live without it if I had to but certainly would not choose it.

It´s sort of like electricity. Mankind lived the longest time without it, yet we would probably be quite helpless without it.

Would we be more helpless or would we turn back to relying on our instincts more?

I know what you mean. I didn't have one for hte longest time when they first came out. Only reason I got one then was a gift from my mother in law when she got a second one and didn't have a use for it.... Anyway...I use mine only for heating stuff up...a few frozen dinners but for 98% of the time...heat up only. I can't stand the taste of food in the nuker as it is boiled from the inside out and that just doesnt't taste good to me! Meat especially. Just makes it tough. I can live without one. I guess the only other one I use enough to matter is my ice tea maker...but even then... boil the water on the stove and brew the tea. So really, I don't have an appliance that I depend on or would really even miss...okay, wait... my toaster oven. I do use that alot instead of my regular oven. With just two of us... no sense heating up that huge oven. I bake/cook in the toaster oven alot. Even use it to toast bread and warm things up. I guess that would be my favorite and not liking to do without.

I do not have a toaster oven either and think that would be really kind of nice to have around. The nuker is pretty interesting when you know how it works. Pretty scary really...

That can be a challenge when it is hot outside. We tend to grill outside a lot over the two months of hot weather we have here. But, in the winter I love to bake bread etc to help keep the house warm. Way to get creative on the pork. :)

coffeebreak I use my toaster oven a lot also. Especially when it's been 100 degrees outside. LOL this week I even took my little toaster oven outside on the patio to cook a small pork roast. I didn't want to heat up the kitchen and really wanted cold pork sandwiches..

I have one, and I do use it because it heats up my food quicker and I don't have to watch it constantly like I do on the stove..Though I had done without one, and yes it takes more time and sometimes even more dishes, and the only thing that would bother me is when I am fighting the time to get my school work done and keeping alert with coffee. I hate even lukewarm coffee and I sometimes have to reheat it... What can I never imagine I can live without? As much as I love my bread machine, mixer, blender, and juicer, I have lived without them, but it wasn't as easy. I think what I couldn't live without is my coffee maker..I love coffee and I know when we lost electricity for 4 days due to a bad storm, I was ever so grateful to my neighbor, she let me borrow her camping coffee maker and I was able to make coffee on our coleman stove..

Well that is a great neighbor! Reheating coffee is really easy in a microwave, I haven't thought of doing that cause I don't mind it cold at all. I wonder how else you could do that though, would you pour it in a pan on the stove? Nah, I'll just drink it cold, lol. I love my coleman camping gear, we always have it ready during storms :)

For some reason once coffee gets even close to lukewarm, I gag, so it has to be somewhat hot and yes, if nothing else, I'd heat it on the stove if I had to. As for my neighbor, yes she is wonderful..

Maybe that is why I don't mind not having a microwave, I can't think of anything that I would mind eating or drinking cold... It is so wonderful to have a good neighbor, make the community grow so much :)

I do have a microwave oven, have had one for far too many years to rember. This brings memories back to me as a few years back I started a discussion on here title something like.. "if you had to choose between your tumble dryer and mircowave which could you live without. In reply to my own question I said that I would get rid of the mircowave and would keep my tumble dryer. So I could live without one. Now I bet you are going ot tell me you haven't a tumble dryer either?? Ha Ha. There are five of us living in our house so an awful lot of washing, I would hate to have to try and dry everything without it, I think also if I had to choose between tumble and pc, the tumble would win as well.

Oh boy do I have a dryer in my house. I would have a hard time living without my washer and dryer here too. I have a husband, two kids, and two roomates so it is necessary really... okay no not really but it sure does make life easier :)

Anne noticing that you use a tumble drier a lot. I hope you try to dry as much washing as you can without, as these pieces of household equipment use loads of electricity. I don't know what the cost of household power is like in the states ( I think that's where you are) but it costs a fortune in the UK.

I do not have a microwave. For awhile our family used one provided by my daughter. While they are convenient, they are not a healthy cooking method. They change the structure of food, destroy vitamins and other nutrients. Convenience is not an option for me when it puts my family's health at risk. The refrigerator is the appliance I most find necessary.

That's why I gave it up and do not miss it. Besides, I know how to reheat food in an oven or on the stove!

That is certainly why I don't miss it. Mine turned on one day, by itself, and then proceeded to catch fire. Thankfully I was home and able to get it under control! After it was gone, I realized that my dull headaches were gone... My mother gave me one not too long ago and I put it in my trunk and got it in the house and it did not work. I will never have one again now that I understand that I really don't need it!

That's for true! I would agree wholeheartedly with the changing the structure of food. It is already so bad for us, why make it worse by "nuking it"?

I find a microwave essential for saving time. I also like the fact it doesn't heat up the kitchen like a stove does. It's excellent for reheating. I resisited buying one for years because in the beginning everyone was concerned about radiation leaks. Then my mother came to live with us because she wasn't doing well physically. LOL the day I had to reheat her food 3 times is the day we decided we needed a microwave. It has been a convenience ever since. I think the one 'gaget' I miss the most if all were taken away is the internet. LOL years ago we managed without it but now I would not want to.

i do have a microwave. it is very useful and helpful since i cook my own food. microwave makes the reheating very easy. and i do it while doing other things. now, i'd say i am very grateful to rice cooker. as asian, my meal is not complete without rice. it is very convenient for me to cook rice. i can do it while my hands are on other things. i am not tied to cooking rice, but i love to cook the dishes with my own hands.

I see you use a microwave the way I would, for reheating and defrosting. I simply can't be convinced that they cook things as well as gas or wood (or electric if you must), at least not if you care that all the tastes are there. Rice cooker and crock pot, on the other hand, I would really miss. I do a lot of casseroles and risottos, as well as plain rice dishes. Lash

I can see defrosting and reheating being easier but I think it dries the food out too much. I don't have a rice cooker but sure do love rice. I make it on the stove-top and a lot of the times it burns a bit on the bottom. Perhaps I should get a rice cooker... I love my crock-pot too! It is so great to have around, we even have more than one. I've never made risotto, is it easy?

Hi jodylee! I also don't have a microwave oven and still don't have any plans of buying it! I just don't feel the need for having one. Well, washing machine makes my life easier but still I can live without it. Maybe flat iron? hehe coz with my husband's line of work, he always need to have a well ironed clothes and it will be expensive if I will pay for someone to iron his clothes. So a flat iron is very necessary in our house.

When I lived and worked in Asia, we didn't have a microwave. That appliance was available there, but it wasn't a necessity. Food and restaurants were readily available, and really cheap that it was more of the norm to eat warm food at little shops than re-heating food. I guess for me, the TV would be the appliance that I could not live without. Aside from its entertainment value, I use the white noise it creates to get to sleep, to study, and do work at home.

I too have opted out of it as I don't feel the need for it. I think it is required when people don't eat at the same time and that is not the case in my house. I have a cooking range which has 4 burners with the facility to bake and grill which takes care of my needs

That is me too! We eat as a family and if I need to warm something up, I use the stove. My microwave turned on one day, all by itself, and caught fire. Thankfully we were home so we were able to get it taken care of without any damage. At that time, I was getting regular headaches... not a migraine but a dull one. Anyway, when the microwave was gone from the house, so were the headaches. I have no desire to own another one ever again.

Good point on the can't live without items. I have two freezer's, and would love a third. I never use my vacuum for the same reason. They are a pain and never do a good job for me. I use my broom and save the electricity.

If you are a vegetarian and eat extremely healthily there would be little for a microwave I would think. The biggest need for a modern combination microwave would be to avoid putting an oven on. The electric conventional ovens are very expensive to run and the modern combination microwave that we have just purchased is quicker and cheaper to run. We have a passion for roast potatoes and this new oven is the best replacement for conventional that we have used. Very pleased with purchase.

We have a gas stove and our little propane tank last just about a year at $175 a tank. I think we eat pretty healthy but not overly... certainly not vegetarian though :) I am glad you are happy with your new purchase. I have read from others that they wrap veggies like potatoes in a wet paper towel, is this something you do as well?

I have a microwave oven at home and it is useful for me because it can save a lot of time of cooking. I think it depends on your habit. If you don't have it for a long time, it is no problem for you. But when my old microwave oven doesn't work and it can not be fixed, then I go to buy a new one immediately. I don't get used to be without a microwave oven. And I also think that the washing machine is important for us since we never wash clothes by ourselves. It will be a tiring housework. I love China

I have both, a microwave and a stove. Sadly, because there are times I don't have enough time to get everything done, I tend to use the microwave more than my stove. My oven doesn't bake as fast as it should. It once took me two hours just to bake chicken when it should only take an hour at the most, 30 minutes at the least. Currently with my financial status I cannot afford a new stove. My microwave though has saved me a lot of times and my food has always tasted cooked all the way through. I really think it all depends on the watts being used and the type of food chosen to microwave. There are some foods you just can't microwave and expect to eat. I've never owned a rice cooker before, but I would love to own a toaster oven. They're great for Texas Toasts and pizzas.
