Is my country really independence?

I repeatedly heard the saying this question through speeches and official talks on television. Actually, what is the meaning of Independence? Over the period, the notion of independence is growing. In fact, what are we independent of ? There is a saying my country is not fully independent, but we proclaimed the freedom of our country from invaders seventy years ago. My question is when we will be independent ? or is Independence only a dream ?

Independence signifies freedom. The freedom should be manifested in all aspects such as freedom of speech, freedom in making decisions related to the country and freedom from influences. When we are talking about independence, it shall not be said through words, but actions. Let me put an example for you, there is an independent country, where it is managed and administered by elected leaders. Such leaders are working under direct influences, orders or supervisions from another country. Thus, is the country independent? Yes, however, the leaders aren't. Thus, when mentioning or discussing about independence, whole factors are involved where it cannot be conclusively manifested by the country free from invaders. Happy Mylotting!

If the leaders are independent, then, the country is not necessarily independent. As I have said in the last statement above, whole factors are involved. Thus, leadership is just another factor, where I made an example out of it. There are other factors involved such as economic independence and public independence. If I ought to discuss all, I guess we need quite a long discussion. Hope this satisfies your question. Happy Mylotting!

In these times of globalization, it is difficult to be independent !! A country depends on another/many countries for the commodities that don't exist in that country. If you are not dependent on anyone and earning for yourself, that means you got the independence.

Meaning that of the many number of countries, none of them which are fully independent. Even the United States imported goods from some countries like Japan and Germany as well as Japan and Germany imported products from the United States. So, your understanding of independence is from the economic segment. There are many understanding of independence then.

I agree with gadget_lover, but not only the economic segment is involved. Cultures overlap (don´t we all talk of "mouse" of the computer instead of using our own languages?). Many festivities have changed in different countries and they come from a sort of cultural colonization that comes with MacDonalds, Halloween, Valentine´s day and others. I always find sad and funny to see in my country old men dressed as Santa. In December it is Summer and it´s our warmest month with temperatures that go above 30ºC where I live. Yet, poor people wear those Winter clothes and say Ho-HO! (not a way of saying anything in Spanish) just to earn some coins.

Yeah, like Indonesia is literally independence politically but not economically. We are still dependent of other countries as such Japan, Malaysia and etc.

Very interesting! I also sometimes have the same opinion and same qusations as you are. Colonialism period has been indeed passed, but we are not convinced that the country in which we live really been independent. The fact is, however, the economic control by the owners of capital have made many nations in the world today covertly colonized!

Yes, that's right. Our need is depended on other countries, but if we want, we could start using our own product. We don't have to buy car if we don't have to. The problem is the people who worsen the concept of independence, because we don't want to. Isn't it ?

Independent you are if you are able to help (out) yourself and you don't need anyone else. Are you, as a person, independent? Do you own your own house, grow your own food? Don't you need anyone to help you out to stay alive? Most countries are not independant since we have a kind of standard for living. So we like to have the products others make/have. If we are able to import these products by exporting what we make/have we are independant too. Although it will be hard if we really need that product and we are not allowed or able to import it because the other country doesn't like us or is in war. Then we have a big problem. But most countries work like that and most countries do use loans of other countries to buy or pay off or invest. If you need a lot of money and you are not able to invest or make money out of that you are in big trouble. Especially if you can't pay off your debts. If you are in need for products your country doesn't have or can produce you are in big trouble too. I think at this moment indepence just means you are an own country, with an own government, own lawn and borders and other countries accept that. For the rest independence is a dream

Hello...I do not feel completely independent. To eat, not problem. I can feed myself. I have a job and income each month. But many others, eating is problem and moreover housing. I am sad to see such a state. Is independence measured by daily needs such as food and a house to live.
