US Post office is "financially self sufficient" so why is it in trouble?

Is the post office in trouble because it can't handle its own business? Or is there a (choose which one or ones you prefer) sinister/stupid/greedy reason the Federal government requires it to pay for health care for employees who have yet to be born? http://redtape.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/10/07/8191425-twisted-government-accounting-behind-postal-service-woes

Personally the issues with the Post Office really makes no sense to me, and I know people who have personally been effected by some of the ones they chose to close. I know they are far from the only government type position where jobs are ending, and it is Sad. Makes you really wonder now what is really the most important?
