A friend of mine is thinking in having a dog, and he is looking for a purebreed dog, I suggested him to adopt one instead, but he says that he prefer to buy one from a recognized dealer, but I think that, being that large amount of abandoned dogs, some of them of good breed, it is better to adopt one, that´s what I have done always, and I am always happy with my choice. I think that most people who wants a breed dog, what really wants, is showing off their status, but I would like to hear your opinions here.

There must be some people who buy purebred dogs only to show off but it is not a general rule. The breeds were created for some reasons and each breed of dog has its utility. If you need a dog for a particular reason, it's better to get a dog that was created for that job. If you need a truck, you don't take a second hand family car from the garage, do you? Of course, if all you want is a companion, adopting a dog from a shelter is the best option.

Yes, I agree that there are some cases when a pure breed is bought, because of the particular characteristics of this breed, for the tasks you want this dog to fulfill for you, yet, most of time, people is looking a dog, just to have a pet, and, in this case, there is no reason to prefer a pure breed over a stray dog, and most of times, is just to show up. Or do you use a Ferrari, just to go to the market?

The comparison is forced. A purebred dog doesn't cost thousand times more than any other dog. Let's try another comparison: do you buy clothes? How do you choose them? Let me guess: among similar clothing items you choose the one you like? Or, if you need a carpet for your home, do you buy the carpet you like or just any carpet, no matter the fabric, size, shape or colors?

My first dog came from the shelter as a puppy and she was the sweetest dog. I would encourage your friend to check the shelter. We live in a small area and even our shelter has full blooded dogs available that were dropped off because their owners either couldn't handle the responsibility any more or they couldn't afford to keep them. Not all animals at the shelter are mixed breeds. I got my two dogs from a friend and our cats one was from a friend and another a stray we adopted. I'm all for going to the shelter again if I'm in the market for a pet.

He finally listened, and went to a shelter, and found an incredibly funny and cute puppy, that has made him happy all this time. I also think that shelters are the best option. Thank you for your reply and comment

Most people who buy dogs, I hope buy them for the long haul. Then there r the group that buy a dog they saw that is trained, grown up and is really a good dog, let it be in a backyard or house, whatever, let it grow up without training, then deside that this dog isn't doing what they want , dump it. Then you have they group of buyers that CAN'T afford a dog then find out they cost just like another kid in the house, then don't have time then just because, dump the poor animal, or try to sell it...I can't afford this animal.. I got it for free...Sometimes you can get a good dog this way, but in all just a crap shoot.

I agree that having a dog, or, any other animal, carries out a responsibility, some people can´t stand. Must people goes for the cute cub, and do not think that this puppy will grow up, and his needs will grow with him/her. It is a shame, that some people find so easy to dump a friend dog in the street, instead of making a little effort to try to fill the animal needs, that are not as much, in most dogs breeds, that´s why shelters are for, and I am happy for it.

We too had this craze for pedigree and had several different type of dogs over the years but we decided that strays are no less and we now have a beautiful pet. She is a wonderful companion. Here is a video on her http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3NVqwQVsuU

I watched your video, beautiful dog, and funny too, it reminded me one I had in my childhood, I loved so much....I am happy that you gave this lovely little one a good home, and love and care as well. As for my friend, I have good news, and it is that he finally get into reason, and he adopted one as well, a lovely little one, quite similar to yours, only with a lighter color, cinnamon color, but just as lovely and playful.

I agree with your feelings about adoption. But, your friend is also right. If he wants to get a pure-breed animal there is nothing wrong with that. And, if he is able to pay for it,that means somebody will get extra money. And that is a good thing.

Of course there is nothing wrong with having a pure breed dog, and, if he did so, of course, someone would have had quite a bit of money in the transaction, but, being so many animals, perfect companions waiting for someone in shelters, is it correct to choose a full breed for no better reason than for status?, I don´t think so, I have nothing against pure breed dogs, of course, neither in having some extra bucks and show it up a little, but, the most important thing, is acting, in any circunstance acording to our values. Thanks for your comment and sharing your views.

hi:) I think adopting is better than buying, but it also depends on his purpose, if he wants to show off or he want to make it a show dog then i think pure breed is good but if only a pet, better if he adopt, that way he already get a dog and at the same time helped a stray dog have shelter, that's more satisfactory.

Hi, and I am agree with you, unless he wants a dog for show up, in contests or whatever else, or, unless he wants the dog for a very specific need, neither of wich is the case here, adopting is the best option, and I am happy to say that he did it, and now he has a fantastic pet dog, he is happy with her. Thank you for your answer and contribution.

We've had pets before and all were adopted from animal shelters. This is actually good practicve since it gives these animals chances to have a family again taking care of them.

there are just people who loves dogs. as to buying or adopting, adopting is better because one is helping a dog out. it gives more a feeling of sense and satisfaction.

yes, I agree with you, I love dogs, and giving shelter and care to one, that otherwise, will be on the streets, or in abuse, is a rewarding thing in itself, I have always have stray dogs, and I love them.

Your friend probably does not have the true love for a dog. Mixed breed dogs are generally healthier and with good nature. Pure breed dogs are good in names, and for showing off, but they are often sick, and they have certain inherited genes that caused certain medical conditions. I think your friend just wants to show off his wealth, and he wants to do so through a dog.

I would never ever buy a dog.Even if someone give me a purebreed dog for free i wouldn't accept that because if i dont adopt it then someone else would surely adopt it.My dog is an indian native dog and pom mix and i would always adopt a dog which is considered as low class by others. Also, not everyone buy a pure breed dog to show off their status.SOme people buy dogs like labrador ,gsd etc would want to train it with advanced skills, since they are more intelligent and wanting to please its owner. But for most of the people who needs a companion dog and to guard the house ,a mutt dog would be more than enough.

I guess you are right, there are other reasons to have a pure breed than for just show up, but, nevertheless, this cases are exceptional, perhaps, the exception that confirms the rule. Most people wants a dog only for a pet, and in this cases, a stray dog, and adopted one, is the best choice.

Adopting is a good idea. In my country, there's little shelter so we often shop. Better dog better prices :p. If it is really dog lovers, they will adopt one. But, actually it's all depends on one feelings. I don't like this one, I prefer buy. And the puppies on petshop or breeder are more cute than on a shelter, so they want to buy one.

You are right, some people prefer cute dogs from a pet-shop, rather than adopting one from a shelter, and, in the end, is the will to show up, what is behind this behaviour, in my opinion. Maybe dogs in shelters, are not as cute, maybe not even young, but it is a more rewarding thing to do.

For the ones who really like dogs or any other kinds of animals, obviously the better choice is to go for adopting. If the adoptator's intension is just for showing off, then it would be unfair for the animal, as you could imagine how pathetic when the adoptator is tired of taking care of the little creature and abandon them then turns to their new interests.

You are right, this is something that is for dog-lovers, someone who is actually looking for a companion, adopting a dog, for later, dispose on him/her, is cruel and ruthless. As for my friend, he adopted one, a cute female one, not a cub, but young, and he is happy with her. I am sure, he will give her a good home.
