I heard on the radio station that I listen to that Jon Bon Jovi is opening up a vegan restaurant in New Jersey and its got a gimmic. The gimmic is you either donate what you think the meal is worth or work your bill off in volunteer hours at the restaurant. what do you think? which would you do? I would volunteer because you never know who might drop by!

I've heard of other places where you pay what you think the meal is worth. I think there are a couple in California. I've heard of roadside stands where you do that, pay what you think the fruit or the veggies are worth. But volunteer to work the meal, that's different and a choice of pay what you think it's worth or work it is interesting. I think people who have no money have the opportunity to do some work and be able to eat. I guess it would depend on how much money I had and how much time I had. If I had money and no time,I'd pay. If I had time, but no money, I'd volunteer. I wonder what's on the menu. Vegan tells you what's not on the menu. I'd like to know what is on it.

Are you serious? How do these places stay in business? I mean, the customer would have to be honest in order for the owner to make any kind of profit and I can see someone ordering a meal worth at least 5-7 dollars and only paying a couple bucks...

I'm very serious. uring the California special, they said that often people hand them a $20 for a meal they would have charged $10 for and leave. Someone else would pay the $10 and someone else would pay $5. It all evens out, I guess.

I am not sure I would like to go in a restaurant where the chef is volunteering for a time he has evaluated himself to pay his bill which is not a bill. Seriously, I don't believe a restaurant like this can be opened a long time on this basis, but if I was living in the neighborhood, I would probably push the door by curiosity.

Vegan, huh? I'd probably pass. It's an interesting thing to do though. I'll be interested in hearing how it does.

I had to search in order to believe this and found this: http://news.yahoo.com/jon-bon-jovis-charity-restaurant-opens-172951387.html I think I would donate when I could and volunteer when I could. But I wonder if a place like this can survive?

I've heard of a restaurant like this. Personally I'd love one like that. My whole family would be there everyday working off our meals!!! I've also heard of them like this where they also give people job skills volunteering at such places as well as a hot meal.

Well, I'm not a vegan, so I'm not sure that I would ever go there to eat. But perhaps because as you said "You never know who might drop by" Including Mr. Bon Jovi himself! That man is one gorgeous male specimen! LOL In all seriousness though. My question would be who would make the decision of what a meal was worth in terms of working it off. Because quite frankly, some are going to be more willing to work in a different capacity and at different levels of willingness than others. That's a nice way of saying that there are lazy people out there who would spend more time trying to get out of it than they would if they would just do the work in the first place! And you know the nameless person in your crowd of friends/acquaintences that I'm talking about, because we all know at least one person with that kind of mentality!

John bon Jovi must be really wise for having thought of that kid of gimmic. I wish I could visit and volunteer in his restaurant should that really push through. I love vegan restaurants and would surely enjoy eating in that soon to be opened resto. Go John Von Jovi go!

Hi cher913, that sound interesting. Things are really chaning and people are coming up with a lot of ideas on how to make money and run business. As for me I think I would volunteer too. Because I am not doing anything right now and it would give me something to do during the day. I would be helping myself and the restaurant at the same time. Like killing two birds with one stone (so to speak)

It's a good gimmick, but I don't think it's a good business. It sounds like something that wouldn't last very long. I can't see Bon Jovi paying for all the ingredients, and salary of the staff all the time. But if he can do it, then more power to him!

I don't know about this type of restaurant. With my busy schedule at work, and other project on my head, I might not be able to volunteer anything to do at the restaurant. I might pay what I think it is worth. That is all I can do, pay for what I eat.

Well, it's good to see the USA finally catching onto one of our ideas that has been running here successfully for years. This place even had its own documentary series on the SBS network recently. Well, ours wasn't started by a celebrity & we don't permit volunteer workers due to health & safety regulations, but if it works for you guys, then hey! http://www.lentilasanything.com/ I wonder why it's only the veg restaurants that are doing this? Either way, I hope they all survive in these difficult times.

I was just reading about this restaurant on yahoo not 2 minutes ago. Definitely a new twist in dining. I am not sure how it will go over. I have a very active toddler, so volunteering would probably be out, but I would love to be a fly on the wall. Something this new with a celebrity name is going to bring more celebrities.

Quite interesting concept really. I wonder though how many people will just donate and be way off? It would be interesting to see and hear what the outcome of this will be, and if it is something that will catch on other places, and with other people as well. This could definately be a Great way to feed people who cannot afford to eat if they are willing to donate their time instead.

That sounds awesome! I would rather work but wouldn't mind also giving a donation. It would be fun to work someplace like that...meet different people! And you are right..you would never know whose going to walk through the door next!
