What should I do of such a boss?

So, here it is, My boss I believe is the worst person on the planet. I need leave for a fortnight because I've my MBA exams, but he's refusing to give it, saying it'd be difficult. I've told him about these leaves a couple of months back and now there're just a couple of days for my exams to commence and he's behaving as if he doesn't know, I made him aware about this last week too, and he gave his consent so I was happy that at last I'd get to study without any headache of job, you know it's really difficult to get back from work and then study and go for exam the next day. I need to complete my MBA to get promoted because graduation is of not much importance in my country, you need to have post graduation at least to get a higher pay and all the benefits comes along with it. I'm not going on holidays and asking for leaves, I've a genuine reason and it isn't like I'm telling him today, I've told this thing to him a couple of months earlier to act responsibly. I do my work with all responsibility and pay heed to important tasks and never take leaves just for taking it, whenever I've serious business only then I take it. My boss goes to vacation for at least two to three days to some beautiful place, but doesn't let his employees take the leaves, I can't leave job because the job pays me well, but I've to move ahead in life and get even bigger pays and that's why taking further education becomes a thing of utmost importance. Please advice me what should I do of such a boss, he can adjust things but deliberately he's not willing to making me depress and threatening of sacking me if I proceed ahead, I'm in such a big trouble at this point. Please help me how do I tackle such a boss.

I guess you must leave your company as you don't have any other way but to complete your MBA. After MBA you can continue to search for other better opportunities. If you still think that this company is very good, then you must obey your boss to stop your education.

Wongchoiyee, I am going on leave without worrying about the consequences and even though my boss sacks me I'll find another one, I may not get a better paying job than this but I'd always have an option of searching another. Education is important in life and lets not be late because having it at the right moment is necessary.

He sounds forgetful. I would remind him that he already gave you his consent. I would take my chances and take the leave regardless of his threats and then deal with him when you come back.

He sounds like one of those bosses that really should not be a boss. Glad though that you still have your job. They are hard to come by these days.

Don't we all feel the same. Everyone feels that his/her boss is the worst boss around. But seriously I think if you feel that your boss is not being reasonable you should first talk to him once. But if that does not work, you should not hesitate to discuss the same with your HR department and see if they can help you. Cheers! Ram

Try to talk with him again about it. Do it in a humble and nice manner and explain why there is really a need to do so. Assure him that you will be forever grateful to him for giving you this opportunity. Plead with him, because he is just human and he will give in to your pleading.

Well, my friend you are in for a trouble at work. You could be placed on AWOL for having been disapproved on that vacation. Pray that you will still have your work when you come back to the office.

basically he suppose to give you the day of, because you request it two month ago, and any company knows that education has priority they can't fired you for that. you are a good employee cause other employee would just call saying they very sick and once again what they are going to do fired you? that's my opinion. but hold on to your job cause you don't have a choice and try to talk to him if he doesn't want to give you the day, try to call corporate because every body has a boss, corporate will deal with that and you will have the day off.

Hi shailesh. I'm sorry to hear this. Your boss is indeed very selfish. I can feel your pain. I once had a selfish boss, too. My previous company is always invited to different social events. Sometimes, these events take place during the night. Since the company pays my boss' gas and the like, he is responsible for taking his subordinates to these events. He will pick them up from the company, go to the event together, and then drive his subordinates back to the company. However, I heard that many times on their way back to the company, he would just ask his subordinates to get out of his car in the middle of somewhere because he thinks it's a hassle to drive all the way back to the company. He doesn't even care even if it was raining. What's worse is he wouldn't even lend his subordinates some of his umbrellas in the car. He's a good liar too. He takes all the credits from other people's hard work. None of his subordinates respect him. Since you've already done your part (asking your boss ahead of time), just go ahead and take your exam. You have no other choice and your boss can't stop you. If you're worried about being fired, perhaps you can call in sick on that day? He can't do anything about it. Maybe your job is very important to you now and it's hard to mess up at this point. I don't know if your boss is being serious about firing you. I hope not. The worst case scenario is that either (1.) You will take your MBA exam and lose your job or (2.) You will not take your exam and still have your job (and perhaps lose all your chances of getting promoted or finding a better job). You have to think which is more important to you and which will benefit you more in the long run. Good luck!

You should try to talk to him again and try to convince him that this is very important for you and you can't miss your exams. If he is still adamant you should have a chat with your HR manager and try to make them understand the gravity of the situation and i am sure HR guys will make this possible for you. The only resolution is by having a chat and making them realize that this is important and you have to wait for 1 more year if you can't make it this year.

Hi Vishal, thanks for your response. Unfortunately, he's power above each of them, so they'll follow his footsteps as he must have instructed them, I am gonna proceed ahead with my exams and go on leave because I don't have any other option, this is a sure absurdity to stop people from succeeding, everyone wants to earn more and my boss's behavior is a height of selfishness.

I am sorry to hear about the difficulty you are having with your boss right now. It is indeed very stressful to deal with that kind of a boss. Your boss clearly does not care about your education. Perhaps he thinks that once you've completed your MBA, you will surely resign from your current work and look for better opportunities. Losing you as an employee would then become a loss of the company. That might be the reason why your MBA is the least of his concerns. Well, that is of course selfish of him, because it is only practical (and natural) for anyone to follow his dreams and aim for the best. It is very admirable of you to be working and studying at the same time. Those two are very difficult to handle at the same time. Many would rather choose one at a time to avoid conflicts. Since your boss already consented to your request ahead of time, it is very wrong of him to change his mind before your big day. While it might threaten your position at work, but there is no other way but for you to try to talk to him again. Tell him that you've already set your schedule, and he already consented to your request before. You have no other option but to take a leave and take your exam. I hope he will finally listen to you. Best wishes, and good luck to your exams.

Hi seriousnuts thanks for your concern, my boss is selfish for sure and there's no doubt in that, he's the owner so I've nobody else to complain to. As you said it is only natural for anyone to follow dreams and succeed in life. My boss is of my father's age, his son also plays an important role in managing the company, he should understand people's wishes and not to be overly selfish for his vicious wishes. If his son would have asked for leaves wouldn't he have given those to fulfill his dreams, obviously he would have given, he has dirty games going on in his mind. I don't want to leave job because I can't get a better paying job than this and the company is near my home so I can control a lot of my petrol expenses and hence save a lot of money. I'm going go on leave as I don't have any other option. I hate people who stop people from succeeding and moving ahead in life and I can never admire such people no matter how nice they are in their personal life.
