The Best Tonic Is DEFINITELY Laughter!

I've had such a good time at my Mum and Dad's house this week. Honestly, they're like a double act, they really should be on stage! First up was my Dad. He's been a bit frustrated lately due to people letting him down over various jobs he wants doing..so he came into the back room where me and Mum were situated and told us he just wanted to borrow the portable landline phone (even though there's a corded one with big buttons on it that I bought him in the hallway) lol. Anyway, after a few minutes he came back with the phone, muttering the words, "Bloody fool!" to himself. "What's up?" I asked him. "Didn't you get through?" "Eventually I did..I thought I'd picked up the phone, pressed the numbers, put it to my ear and thought "That's odd!" as there was no dialing tone. Turns out I'd been trying to phone someone using my remote control! I'm getting worse..bloody fool!" Haha! Now, the second incident involved my Mum. Shopping with her is always entertaining and the other day she suddenly decided she desperately needed some step-ladders as the ones she has are too cumbersome to use. They are, actually, as she did struggle with her painting on them before deciding they were no good lol. Anyway, off we toddled to the local DIY Timber Merchants. Dad had already "been ecstatic" due to buying two bolts for his bench outside. The likes of B&Q don't even sell them and tend to go for multipacks of things, which annoys Dad no end. So, the fact Mum wanted to boycott B&Q on this occasion suited me fine! There were 3 sizes of step-ladder to choose from; small, medium and large. Mum being Mum she couldn't decide so asked for some advice in the shop. The place was bedlam with people milling about so she wasn't the only customer. This gorgeous Irish shopkeeper guy said to her, "Well luv, the only way you're gonna find out is if you try them out in the shop" and before she could object, he'd ripped the plastic wrapper off the smallest step-ladders and had them splayed out so she could get up onto the steps...as he reckoned the ceiling was about 8 foot high, the same as at home. Then the funniest thing happened; even before Mum got on this step-ladder she tripped over her bag lying on the floor beside it and nearly went head-first into the darned thing! "Oops, mind how you go!" the Irish guy said. Everyone in the shop joined in with the laughter, including my Mum, who wasn't offended at all. In fact, she was laughing so much she could hardly climb up this marvellous step-ladder. "Do you feel safe enough to try the top step?" the gorgeous Irishman asked her. I was dreading her trying to do this but she decided it WASN'T safe after all and ended up buying the medium sized-ones as they were perfect for her to reach the 8 foot ceiling. We know this for certain now as she's since used them! It's great finding a local shop that outdoes the nationals..and provides us with some fun, to boot!

Oh you do have some great laughs with your family. I have great times when I visit with my folks as well. I liked the story about your dad and the remote. I provided day car for a two year old who was sure that the remote was her telephone. She would try to bite anyone who interfered.

When Dad told us what had happened Mum said, "Oh, I do that all the time..get the remote mixed up with the phone!" What a pair!

What funny things!Your Dad phoned someone with remote control;your Mum very nearly tumbled down in the shop. But there again,Old people are prone to make a fool of themselves because they have bad memory and their ability falls short of their wishes.I am only 62,but age is beginning to tell on me.

Sixty-two isn't old but my Mum IS 65 and she told me she was at the top of the garden getting rid of rotting apples. She said she was there ages! I reckon she's more hyper-active now than 20 years ago!

That's the sort of thing that makes you go back next time. You'd never get that sort of service in a big shop.

That is a rather great story that put a smile to my face. It does seem like laughter is a good thing. We need to take all of the amusing things that we can in our life. There are just going to really be many times where its not going to be amusing, where there are going to be times where life gets us down. However, we need to find amusing things, things that make us laugh, things that make us smile. Otherwise life is a rather dark and depressing place. So indeed laughter is a really a pretty good tonic to say the very least. It is just something that is really going to make us smile. Something that is going to extremely allow us really cause us a lot of joy. Joy is really something that we need. Laughter is a wonderful thing and while it is not a cure all, it will in fact cure a lot of things and it is rather going to be something that has tended to bring a bright smile to our face.

You're so right and I'm glad you liked my story..which is true but the way, I never make things up. In Blackpool (where I'm from and where my parents, brother and nephew are still based) there is a series of funny statements called "The Comedy Carpet" said by various comedians, etc that have had "acts" there, as Blackpool is a fun, seaside Town with lots of attractions. I haven't seen it myself (only going past on the bus) but I will! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXZBgBbMCdg

Happy people live long. A person who is able to laugh at simple things is fun to be with. I agree completely that laughter is the best tonic out there!
