For those Who Want to Practice their English

I am one of you guys. I have joined here in mylot for three reasons; to earn, to learn and to practice expressing myself in English. I am in a country which treats English as a second language. Inspite of that, I still find it hard to express what I think in English, especially when done orally. I have been striving to learn English ever since and until now I still cannot master it. Maybe this is because of lack of practice. I only speak English when I'm reciting at school, beyond that I use our native language. So maybe I should use English more often. I found this site called 100words.com where you should write a 100-word-essay about anything under the sun for one month. It's not as easy as it sounds. Constraining your writing with one hundred words only would be difficult especially when you want to share a lot more of things. You would have to be able to express everything you are thinking in just one hundred words so your skills in economizing your thoughts will also be practiced. I think this is a good exercise for people like me who needs to practice their English. Has anyone of you tried it?

I haven't heard about that, but I think it could really be a great help for those trying to master the English language. But I also think that constant oral usage would really help. I mean, you could read a lot of help books and articles on improving English and write tons of stuff to help you express yourself in English, but if you don't speak it often, well... I guess what I'm saying is you really need to converse in English if you want to master it :)

Yes I must agree with you. Writing in English is just the first step and like what you said, talking to others in English would be next. I usually get conscious when I speak in English. It is ten times harder than just writing since you only have seconds to organize your thoughts and respond.

Personally, Lara, I think you are writing English very well for someone who does not speak it naturally! I think it's wonderful that you are learning from that site as well as practicing speaking the language. This is a very good place here at myLot to practice and get a little money for your effort as well. I know a few great places to write, but indeed you must have excellent English skills for the writing, even if you don't speak the language, you could probably try a few of them. You seem ready to me! Good luck and God Bless!

Hi Lara, your English is definitely better than many users here. I think if you treat mylot as a place to learn English, you will not learn much. Many users here do not write in perfect English, since the emphasis here is on sharing, and not language usage. The website that you have mentioned sound interesting. I wonder if you are paid for writing. i will not waste time if I cannot earn from it. I rather write and submit content to Triond or other writing sites. At least I can earn some money online.

How was the site been doing? Did they pay for what you write their or they will just correct your grammar?

Thanks for sharing this Lara! Writing in English is fine with me, more comfortable. I am a quite person. I don't always talk to many people with my 2nd language, English. But this idea is a nice to improve talking straight English. I will find the site and will practice to speak and express myself straight English. :)

English is also my second language. I don't speak English well. 100 words for one month about anything under the sun, oh that is an educative process. There will be mastery too.

Same here, I live in a country where English is considered as second language. I speak English in my school but only when there are teachers or with some girls whom I don't know personally. Otherwise I speak only in my own language with my friends. Talking about 100words.com, I have one question with it. Does this website pays? Because whatever we would be writing there no matter if it is random.

This is the first time I heard about the site. I think it is a good idea, though, what I would like to improve is speaking in English. I am not that fluent in speaking in straight English. Thanks for the information.

Absolutely right! Mylot is a good site to improve one's English communication skills. This is one of the reasons why I would come back and come back to mylot aside the fact that I love the people here.

I haven't tried it yet but with regards to posting things in the internet, I've tried helium and triond instead. These are the few sites which publishes the users work. But still, mylot ranks better as we are able to socialize rather than post an article and wait till its got 1k views then you'll be paid a cent.

I share your sentiments on this. I for one is really comfortable in writing instead of speaking the English language because it is very easy to reconstruct your thoughts and avoid sending the wrong message. Admittedly, I only speak the language when needed. So to remedy this, practice really is the key :)
