Why do you talk to your dogs?

My professor has asked us this question and we all just laughed at ourselves and come to think about it yeah why do we talk to our dogs knowing that they wouldn't answer us! I have never heard of a dog who answered his master when he was asked how are you today with "fine master"! So why do we talk to our dogs? Is it because we feel that they can understand us? well at least the context of what we are saying :)

Your professor asked you that to see what you think about this subject, not to make you feel stupid because you're talking to your dogs. Every dog owner talks to the dogs around. It is nothing unusual in it. Isn't dog the man's best friend? Do you have any friend and you don't talk with him? This is what friends do: communicate. Even if we don't understand dogs, this doesn't mean they don't understand us.

Are you talk with foreigners? That you can not understand me mean that some of us can not speak? You have intelligent person against yourself - your dog. Maybe you do not have dog or not spend enough time with him, because you would know that owner and their dogs have their language. Sometimes communicate better than with their husbands :).

Hi, I talk to my dogs all the time even though I know that I won't get a reply whatever the situation is. Like they say, " Silence speaks louder than words ". I feel that dogs do communicate with us. They don't have to utter a word but our senses can interpret what's going on in their mind.Talking is our way of communication. I guess that's why we talk to our pets all the time - to show how much we care and love them.

I am sure dog understand human. I am used to talk to my dog when it misbehave. I shouted out and my dog didn't do anymore. I think talking to dog meaning we want them to understand what we're feeling. It's deep down on it's heart that dog knows what we want or didn't want.

Our company raises a big dog, but I don't his breed. I always walk close to him before going back home everyday. He always raises one of his front legs and ready to shake hands with me. So I will say: Hi, how are today? I will go home soon and will see you tomorrow.

Wow, a very nice dog. If only i have a dog like that. My dog always excited to see me, she needs to jump over me just to say "hello" every time I going back home. I always talk to my dog even though she don't know my language but I know she feels through the stroke of my hands while talking to her.

i have a feeling that dog's yet can't understand your languages out of our mouth, but the high and low voices that the dog can understand and through body languages then people and dogs can freely communicate and understand each other.

I think dogs can understand words after some time, I know the little dog next door to me can understand a few words and not only on English but in Grekk as her owner is from greece and you only have to say the word once and it is immediate reaction.

Why WOULDN'T you talk to your dogs? dogs bark at people who don't understand them. communication is more than just words, it's tone of voice, body language, energy, all sorts. by talking, we are communicating far more than just the words. for example if I say something and I'm being sarcastic, the people around me know that I'm being sarcastic. if I type the same words, they may easily be misunderstood. if it was all about the words, this wouldn't be the case. also, you'd have to be pretty wierd not to talk to a dog that you're spending time around.

It's quite simple. because each species acts to another species as if it was their own in many ways. we talk to animals even though they can't answer because it's how we best express our feelings. think about it the other way around. we don't smell our dog or lick his body, but dogs do that to us. :) any species can connect in certain ways and we have common paths to befriend but certain behaviors are specific to certain species.

Like humans dogs have feelings and they somehow can understand. I think the more you are close to your dog or pet of any kind the more you're entwined with each others feelings. I remembered one time, my niece had a fever and that my sister didn't know since she was pretty busy doing some errands. If her dog didn't kept on barking at us and running back and forth to my niece's room and to the living room then we wouldn't find out that she was sick. I knew at that time that dogs feel what their master feels and so as the other way around. I think that's the reason why they say that dogs are mans bestfriend.

I talk to my dogs because I believe they will understand me. I can't explain it but if you are well connected/close to your pet I believe you will develop a mutual understanding, especially when you share your feelings. They also have feelings, they can't talk but they can feel. :) And I think talking to your dogs/pet is a healthy thing. ;D
