i believe beside Traffic jam, flooding every year and the peak every 5 years is main problems in Jakarta (both Goverment of Jakarta and the people)... Problem is very complicated i think.. i had ever felt this flood even it`s not worse.. i believe the local government of Jakarta need the support from the local government of Bekasi,Bogor, Depok and Tangerang.. why?? because flood in Jakarta is not only caused the rain in Jakarta but sometimes the flood is caused "bad gift" from water of Bogor etc.. so thats why i feel as long as Jakarta government never coordinate with their neighbour, it`s hard for anticipating flooding (estimated a big flood will happen in January 2012),,, even you are not Jakarta people, i want you share too your opinion about flood in Jakarta...Thanks

Flood is a very difficult problem to solve. And it seems, there will be no settlement. Perhaps, Jakarta residents are familiar with the flood. Perhaps, Jakarta residents, must make the houses high, so do not get wet when it floods. Because, it would be very tiring, if the house should be exposed to water. Jakarta residents, who must adapt to flooding.

But, despite all efforts by the government, there was never any results. Flooding still occurs. Thus, Jakarta resident who had to adapt.

because the anticipation from jakarta government is not maximal i think and then awareness from people is worst..they don`t care if their garbage become trouble someday

yes, flood is familiar with Jakarta but it`s not the reason that the local government let their people always get flood every year

If flooding is a yearly occurance in the country, or it's a natural phenomenon, your government should do something about it to prevent it from getting worse. They can widen drains, allowing water to flow into the sea quickly, or start to have preventive measures properly in place. Whatever the government has to do is simple, raise the ground or create alternative way for water flow. I'm sure the government do have the budget to do it, it's just that if they want or not.

beside traffic jam, flood is main problems for Jakarta but actually not only Jakarta who always get flood every year..many city now always get flood every year..but maybe the information about flood only reported in jakarta area..sometimes i think it`s unfair.. but lets talking about your concern, flood in jakarta yes, with a poor coordination with a neighbour city like Bekasi, Bogor, depok, tangerang, Jakarta local government is difficult for solving problems of flooding..Trust me.. it`s about how all of that city coordinate and "one voice" when they must anticipated the flooding, water flow etc

The city location of Jakarta is slope and flat and the drainage system is not good, so that the water does not flow well. Jakarta is often flooded when the rains come. Plus, the bad habits of people who throw or litter their garbage into the river, so the garbage block the river flow.

i think the bad habot of Jakarta people is same like many people in another city.. sometimes they forget how the garbage can be problem in rainy season.. thats the fact is Jakarta is slope and flat, but can you imagine how Amsterdam situation is worse than Jakarta?? but We never heard flood in Amsterdam

Yes, Amsterdam is in another word knows as Nether Land. Nether mean under. Nether Land is a land under the sea level. They have good dam and drainage system as well. The people of Holland also do not litter.

Anywhere in parts of the world experience flood today because of the effects of ozone layer and massive cutting of trees, the results is global warming. We have to make solution to this problem before its too late for us to vanish in our mother earth.

It is not complicated if all of us can be more discipline and the government can be strict (including city master plan implementation). Holland, in the past, already design canals across the City. However, the development of the city become random and uncontrolled. Moreover, the people's number 1 hobby is throwing garbage anywhere they want, mostly to the river and canals. So, it is just "you get what you pay" game. When the people and the government already do not care, the worst it will be. Do not always blame others for the problems we had. I learn a lot from Korean people regarding this. We can not find any solution of our internal problems, when we start to look others as a source of problems. In the case of Bogor, since past, it was regularly send some bad gift to Jakarta. So it is just, how Jakarta manage it wisely and perfectly. If not, it is mean of management failure. That's all.

too much problems and poor management.. Since ALi Sadikin era, He had tried as his best for controlling the population of Jakarta..and it`s quite success.. But after his era, it`s uncontrollable..Too much "newcomer" who "attack" Jakarta and only search money (they left their village) and thats why Jakarta is crowded.. and many of Jakarta peope had no awareness for taking care their environment.. master plan implementations is not run well, and thats the problem --- Flood

It's a bit similar to what had happened to Manila when the metropolis was inundated by flood waters due to continuous rains and the overflowing of rivers in the adjacent provinces. Apparently, there was no coordination between the local governments of the metropolis and the nearby provinces on the release of water from the dams. This non-coordination resulted in thousands of lives lost and millions of dollars worth of properties damaged. I mean, we can't control nature, but we can minimize the impact of it if we coordinate and work together.
