There are so many anxieties and problems that cause stress. When you are really stressed out what do you do to help calm you down? It seems as if life continually throws things our way. And I know at times I feel as if I'm at my ropes end. Whether it be marriage, financial,or health issues a lot of the time it may all happen at once.

Hello Dominique, A good body massage and sleep help me relieve the stress. I also tend to binge out when i am totally mad over something. Good thing, I don't get fat easily! I also like being with just myself whenever something is bothering me. A walk in the park or a couple of minutes in church helps me clear out my head

I haven't had a massage in a long time. I need to schedule one for some relaxing time for me. My husband will give a massage but they only last like 5 minutes which is not enough time. lol. I do agree that a walk is good. It allows me to think and reflect on all that is happening and what I want to try and accomplish.

Yes indeed, a good body massage will take away the stressed muscles and will help you think more clearly. It would be better to do it at home though so you can rest as long as you can after the massage I am interested to try walk-a-thon but I don't know where I can join. It would be nice to join such an activity to meet more friends

I think it helps a great deal to do the things that we enjoy. And I always feel better after helping others. I'm so glad to be apart of mylot. To be able to share my thoughts and feelings and respond when others share theirs.

I would say that most of us, if not all of us get stress, but not all of us suffer from stress. Stress is a part of day to day life and there are times when we need that for our own protection/survivial. This is something that prehistoric humans used to survive so that they could fight or flee a potential danger. But today, stress still sees non-dangerous things as dangerous at a subconscious level, but there are ways to deal with it. As a therapist, I support people in making the subconscoius conscious so that the person has greater awareness of exactly what is going on the deeper mind and nervous system. One of the best ways of doing this is to develop techniques that will assist a person in digging deeper into the mind. Meditation is one such technique that I have used to with my clients, but it takes discipine, but everyone who has committed to the discipline, has found an new ability to deal with stress and learn how to release it. This is because I believe that we each hold the answer deep in our minds to every predicament and self-knowledge gained through meditation is a powerful way to access the knowledge. _Derek

No, meditation isn't like praying, but stilling the mind and focusing the mind to enable it to be still. On the top right hand side in my profile, there is a link if you want to know about zazen "meditation", which will take you to my webpage that has instructions and explanation about meditating. _Derek

I don't know how to meditate. Is that something like praying silently? I've seen some people on TV do chanting and stuff to get to their inner self, but I don't know anything about that. About all I do is silently pray thanks to God for all He has done for me.. and just try to visualize me holding God's hand or something like that. I've also used imagery.. like lying down, floating on a raft.. but then my imagination takes off and distracts me and I start going through rapids and stuff.. so that doesn't work for me.

You right, my friend. There's a lot of trials in this world. Like today I suffer heavy problems in this life... This really unavoidable and no escape suffering from all of this hindrances in life. But you know my friend. I don't bother to all those things...what the best I can do is to pray. It will make me very much easier to face my problem. Because at the moment no one will help me...other than our Dear God. No listen to me...but only him. Even my wife who must be the one who rely on...but she is the one to push me down. Really sad but those trials come on me was nothing because I have the great power of God on me...

Yup! I can be strong, my friend. Because I know that God will always comfort me in my tribulation. Thanks for the encouragement, my friend. It's really not easy to face difficulties in life. But we need to be strong in behalf of our kids...

I do agree that relying on him is such a huge source of comfort and encouragement. You are right that there are times when not even our spouse are there for us. But we can go to God and prayer and he will listen give us the strength that we need. I hope that you are able to continue to endure these tough times that you are facing.

That sounds like an absolutely wonderful day! lol. Eating and sleeping sounds great. I too enjoy doing that when I'm stressed. I think when I get really stressed I just feel like there isn't much else I can do. Because at those times I feel like my mind is on overload and thinking seems difficult as well. So the solution then for that problem (which I would be able to handle) is eat and sleep. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I think a lot of people really rely on food specially if they are stressed, a friend of mine who is a doctor share with me that after doing some operation she/ and their co-doctors always find or bring something eat to be able to removed their stress or tension.. hehe seems food has a major role in our life, not just for us to survive but also to manage our stress..

I had to go for stress management to deal with my anxiety, and the first thing you are told is to calm down, have a massage, and do meditation. Breathing is an important element here as when you breathe in deep and slowly, you cut the momentum of the anxiety. Your heart races when you are anxious and you are highly strung during that time you are stressed. Cut out coffee with caffeine, drink lots of water, do deep breathing exercises for a few minutes every day, take a nap in the afternoon.

Those sound like great things to do when stressed out. I will have to remember those when my life seems like a lot is happening in it. I will have to remember to cut the caffeine out and take a nap. I love taking a nap.

If you're a jumpy kind of person caffeine is bad for you. Don't eat too much chocolate either as it simple sugar and you get a quick high and then a slump. Watch your coffee and tea. You can have decaffeinated coffee, even in cappuccino, but check the ingredients on the box for caffeine. Although caffeine can assist in good health for other conditions, it is not good for anxiety.

In real life, we have to deal with all kinds of issues and will get stress easily. To ease the stress, I will listen to the music, have a walk or do something I like to do. For example, sewing, have a cup of tea, go shopping and give myself a treat. Sometimes chatting with friends will also help me forget the trouble and ease the worries.

Yeah listening to music does help. And I often like to take a walk and reflect on everything that is going on. When I drive to work it takes thirty minutes so I have a lot of time to and fro to think about any stressful situations that is going on. Oh, and treating ourself is wonderful. I have to be careful though with that or I will gain weight if I snack a lot when I'm stressed :).

I try to look at the good things. Talk to people who care...see if they can think of a solution etc. I find though when im stressed i tend to be an emotional eater. It doesnt really "help" make the stress causes go away or even fix them but it makes me feel a touch better when i do it. Fully aware its not a good habit to have though.

I have high blood pressure and it rises when I stress. I now take two medicine pills, but the thing I do now is concentrate on a kitten that now comes to my door for food. I think about that little kitten bravely coming up to me and "meowing" and my stress goes down. I also play music to calm me down or listen to one of my comic albums on the record player.

Animals are so cute and calming. I'm glad that we are able to enjoy their company. They really do relieve stress and anxiety. It's just hard to resist cute little animals like that. And once we start feeding them they are always making their way back to us. We are happy and feel good when we help them.

I'm sorry to hear that your sister is facing such hard times. I hope that things will improve for her financially and health wise. It's hard to enjoy life when we are facing so many obstacles that get us down. It would be very hard to see our child face many illness and not be able to provide her with what she needs in this proper way because of financial issues or no healthcare.

Praying I agree is very good. It really helps me as I know that I've taken my problems to someone who knows what I'm going through. It can be hard talk with people who don't understand what we are going through, or you don't care. I'm glad that I have this privilege. Taking a nap and resting is something that I love doing.

I have PTSD and a Generalized Anxiety disorder. I am at point in my life I do not need medication anymore, but before getting help I would panic, and go outside and get fresh air,and sometimes breathe into a paper bag. Noone needs to suffer from anxiety and stress.....your mind can make you feel like you are dying when panicky, so I am all for medication for panic and anxiety disorders.

I'm sure that anxiety disorder and panic attacks are very overwhelming. I'm also sure that those who need the medication feel better after having it. It would be too much to handle everythin. I'm glad that you are at a point where you no longer need medication.

I listen to music and will have hot coffee at frequent intervals when I'm stressed at work. If it's a personal life stress then I try to analyse the situation. If that does'nt help I will go for a long drive. Sometimes I will play with my kid. This is really a very good stress-buster

Coffee is great I just love it so much. I think lately though I have been drinking it way too much. I try to have decaffeinated coffee so that way it doesn't affect me as much. I use to like to go for drives but the gas is a killer on me and it would make me more stressed about finances. It's amazing how many things there are that we can stress about. Playing with kids does change our moods fast.

I agree with you those are great things to do as well. Coffee is so wonderful and being able to open up to our spouse can relieve a lot of stress as well. It helps to know that others are aware of the things that we are going through. And often times those who are closest to us try to help us as much as they can.

For me the best way to avoid stress, or to deal with the stress that I can not avoid, is to listen to music. I have thousands of songs in my iPod and iPhone that I take with me everywhere. I find that music can cure just about anything, and relax me, no matter what is happening. If I absolutely need to get out of the house, I go to the coffee shop for a few hours.

That is awesome that you have that many songs that you can listen to when your going to different places. Music can be very relaxing. I need to invest in an ipod or something like that. I do try and listen to music from my computer. Since there is more of a selection than what I've got at home. Going to a coffee house is calming as well. They generally place calming music and the atmosphere is that way. Beside the fact that the coffee is really good.

I do agree that at times for me being alone does help. I think it helps me to really get my thoughts together. This way they are my thoughts and not others. Once I can understand better what I'm feeling then I can take into account what others are feeling or suggest. Thanks so much for sharing with me.

Meditation has proven time and again a way to just clear my head of all stress and worries, but I realize that's not an option for everyone. Whenever I can't find the time to do that, I just drag along my sketchbook with me and draw or write or scribble until I feel better. I listen to music that latches onto my soul because it helps me feel like someone out there understands what I'm going through, and it's one of the greatest things ever. I also end up folding origami when I'm really stressed, as it gives my hands something to do and lets me focus on the folds and the creases instead of my problems for a while.

I'm sure that drawing and origami would keep my mind pretty busy. I can't do either of those. I can hardly draw stick people :). I think it would be neat to be able to draw something awesome. I have no skills in the drawing department which is unfortunate. It amazes me the things that people can draw or paint and how detailed they are. Thanks for sharing.
