Its been Ages and They Havent Changed Their Costumes... How Unfashionable!

Hi All Yesterday, my nephew got some Comics from the local Book Exhibition. And I was surprised that nothing much has changed except the Prices of these books. But hey, I was shocked to see that Phantom Still wears the same ole costume(maybe the jungle people dont get fresh stocks), and so does Mandrake(He is a rich magician and so I believe magicians have to stick with their attire)...Poor guys! They are still so very poor when it comes to clothes! Dont they read Fashion Mags or watch FTV and keep changing them with the times? On the Tele too, when I watch Tom and Donald or even Disney Toons with my nephew, they still are in the same costumes as they used when I was his(my nephew's) age! When was the last time that you changed your attire? Was it because of the Trends in the world of Fashion or was it due to a personal choice or preference? And lastly, I know, this is my insanity here but - Did you ever think on these lines when watching a toon or reading a mag? ps: Seems, Sidy is in the New Year Bash Mood Already... Cheers, theSids

Hello Thesids, I am sure you never watched nowadays cartoons. If you did, you would have known they have lots of fashionable costumes, other than the old blue Donald Duck's jacket or the red skirt of Minnie Mouse. It happened that I watched some "new" cartoons with my nephew and I can tell you I missed the old fashioned cartoons we used to watch in our childhood. I think I still like the old Phantom's costume and Mandrake still looks good to me in his old magician clothes. Why would they change them?

I am sure their mothers/wives do wash their laundry often enough. And I'm pretty sure they bath and use soap and deodorants. Look, here's the proof: http://www.coloring-pictures.net/drawings/Donald/donald-in-his-bath.php

Hello Sids! I think you should put the blame on the creators of those cartoon characters, haha! Well,,kidding aside,I already like the way they are and even if they don't change costumes,it's fine with me,hehe! As to your question,I changed my attire when I was already in my college days, hehe! When I was a high school student,I prefer wearing dresses, long dresses,I'm just comfortable with it. But when I got to college,I preferred wearing pants and shirts or blouses with rubber shoes or sandals,it's easy that way, haha!

Hey thats my dear mtr Wheres Hubby dear? And if he is around what are you doing around? Your account will be safe even if you dont log in for 3 long months or is it the addiction Yes, the creators are the ones who did this to my poor superheroes and that is quite unfair of them. I love long dresses myself too... though I wear shorts most of the days today but I want my shirts or even tees to be xxl in size even when I know they will be too big for two of my size

I love loose shirts too Sids, that's always been my attire at home, hehe! Take care always my dear friend.

Hello Sids, Oh sids if phantom wears trouser he will not be a phantom anymore so its essential that he wears the same outfit to remain phantom but to remind you he has at least 7 same colored outfits which he changes every day and always keep you thinking that he has just one outfit.

I do agree with you sjvg1976 I think every super hero has 7 or more identical uniforms that they change in a daily basis :) And if they would change costumes, maybe make it to a different color, but not really change their clothes totally :) because It's like their signature look

HI.. So let me be the first to wish you a very very Happy New Year! Sid, now you gave the message to the Production crew that you feel there should be a change in costumes! And now they know Sid is grown up but they always target the kids only generation after generations and parents and uncles also join them watch cartoons. Sorry, personally I don't change my wardrobe as per the fashion trend as i always believe in simplicity and traditions..but yes, i do buy t-shirt with Pokemon/Power rangers for my son.

Hi Viju Thanks for reading through the entire discussion Many responded only by the title or the first paragraphs... And also for wishing me the New Year But... now that you have mentioned, I need one Tee with Popeye See, I might have grown in age or whatever, I am happy that I am able to play the kid and live the kid in me and I dont feel bad about that... Instead I have found that I can do many things that people my age cannot to just because the kid in them has gone missing due to any reason that may come up with... I am quite sure, there are many parents and elders who too watch the Toons and read Comics. Only thing, their number is small and the makers dont consider their tastes to be viral

There u got me right. Before responding I do try to read all the comments as well but sometimes it is easy to respond to the post and later on inter comment. I can understand the little Sid in you. In my case I do play with my children, the neighbors & the colony's kids whenever i get time....sometimes it is cricket or badminton. There is no good programs other than the cartoons or children's special except one or two which anyone can watch on TV with family. Most of the programs are either the soaps or targeted to young adults which is again a bad signal for the kids.

When I was a kid (some 60 years ago or maybe 58), I thought that Mandrake was awesomelly attired. How could he have another kind of hat when that´s the only hat that has rabbits and pigeons inside? I would change somethings though, but more on the relation between him and his helper (servant? I don´t like that word). As for the rest, I have seen Minnie Mouse dressed with a long dress for a party. You cannot do much with those feet though. Shoes must hurt a lot there. And if you watch the very first Mickey Toons (before our time) even Mickey´s face has changed (Thanks be given!). He had a wonderful plastic surgery. My favorite are still Tom&Jerry and they don´t need clothes. Fortunatly they haven´t aged. Take care

Hi marguicha That is true. Being a great magician that he is, Mandrake has to have his dress on. I have seen a couple of magicians wearing a similar kind of dresses and so I have no issues with him(also because he is one of the characters that I have been secretly admiring - he resolves many problems around with just his magical powers - no bloodshed). I love the Tom and Jerry and they are always fun when they are aired... no matter how old those episodes might be Timeless classics. And best as you mentioned, they do not need any clothes

Perhaps mamu, they are stingy, i mean producers or writers and have made phantom as he was earlier. Perhaps there wives hit them with spans for watching FTV's models and they have left to watch and remained same unfashionable. So, mamu is in advance celebration of new year. One peg moreeeee

Premature.. Ok..I change fashion because I dont really have a choice. You see, I wear readymade clothes. So old fashioned things are periodically removed from the malls, right? Mandrake and Phantom..thesids, are you telling me they are still alive! Poor Diana. I wonder how many wrinkles she has now. She was engaged to be married to Phantom when I was about 7 years old. So she must be pretty old now. Disney Toons..I like casper. You see, he doesnt have to wear anything.

Of course, the Phantom and Mandrake are alive, hale and hearty. Thanks to the Horse Rides and the Inter Galactic travel, they dont seem to age But Diana... she should have aged but it seems that she too has some elixir with her that keeps her looking young and ravishing as those old days... I last saw her when I was 15 and then we met again yesterday when my nephew got one from the exhibition. Casper, tom and jerry... these are exceptions and dont fit the bill... But Casper? Did you find him anywhere? Please tell him that I have been trying to meet him and it seems he is too occupied... We have an appointment marked Pending since the past so many years

I think these characters are known more by their clothes than their acting. Rose by any other name would smell the same but we cannot apply this principle to these characters - mandrake by any other outfit would still look like Mandrake? I don't think so.

Ah yes, mandrake is a magician so he has to carry his bag of tricks with him and also a magician is no good without his hat

Hi May be they are not reading or watching those Fashion magazines and FTV. But I would like to see all of them in those old costume only.. Its like they will look incomplete without their costumes. I mean we not gonna like Pink spider man. About me, I love to see those cartoons and comics.. But never think about this. I have seen few characters change their costumes (like mickey do in disney cartoon). But in the end original one are the best.

Hi bro akp Talking about changes in the costumes... Well, Spidey did try a new look with black in the 3rd version of his recent movies... but many didnt seem to like that one... But I loved the black one more than the red one... Shades of Dark are always welcome with me ps: but that doesnt mean that I would like to see your great Yellow Avatar in black any day.

Even I don't like to see my yellow one in black.. Yes actually that black costume of spidey was cool. But because it was stating negative role it wasn't appreciate by the fans..

I was never ever a comic reader nor a cartoon fan. It has only been after my nephew's birth that I began watching cartoon programs. I also noticed that cartoons never changed their costumes, but honestly speaking it helped me a lot to remember and identify them as they all appear same to me.

Hi inderjeetkaur Hmmm... I can understand that reasoning here. But dont you think this thought - that they never changed clothes - will ever come to a kid and s/he will not want to follow the trend as normally people do with their Celeb Idols?

No, I don't think so. I haven't seen any kid following this trait of their cartoon character.

Great news for you, thesids, Wonder Woman wears a new outfit! Check her out and be relieved. Kidding aside, I think their costumes have become the trademark of these cartoon characters. Maybe their original illustrator doesn't want any changes on their costumes because their readers have become accustomed to these.

Hi JER Quite right The designers have realized that people have become quite accustomed to seeing their favorite ones the way they started out. For the wonder woman, she looks ravishing many a times just because of her costumes which keep changing

hi thesids thats because to most of us what they are wearing is part of their mystique. Batman has to look like Batman and Superman has to look just like he always did also Orphan Annie has to have the red dress with the white collar. and Popeye would look stupid in any other outfit but his Sailor suit. they are our icons and you do not change icons.as for me I change t shirts everyday but keep same skirt on for several days. but cartoons are meant to stay the same so we know Superman from Batman and Popeye.

I am as bad as one of those cartoon characters. I hardly ever change my style. I do add things here and there that I find attractive or comfortable but I am not one to run out to the department store when fashion changes..lol. When I see some of the newer fashions, I sometimes think they are a bad joke...like the designers just want to see how many people will wear the crazy stuff they come up with.

Perhaps one may notice that the modern trend, inspite of looking for modern appearance, yet it values more to the originality. The classical costumes and customs have been much acceptance and appriciation. Today everybody demands for original stuff. So even in prenting a personality, it depends upon the locality. If the locality reflects still the primitive stage, no wonder that the persons found in comics wear still the same old costumes.

you know brother, if we change their costumes then they will get less responses from us and i am 100% sure. Do you want to watch Phantom as Spiderman by dress? hehehehe

I beg to differ,my friend. I think it is better that the costumes which people in Comics and the like wear are consistent, because they are the ancients or a fictitious character,so there is no need for them to go with the times.
