Do you leave your christmas tree lights on when you go out?

Have been cleaning otday and have been to a house where the key is left for me so I let myself in and out and my money is left on the table for me. When I got there they have put there christmas tree up and had gone to work leaving the lights switched on! I'm not sure if they left them on on purpose or by mistake so for the sake of health and safety I turned them off and wrote in the communication book that we have that I had turned them off. We in our house always turn our christmas tree lights off when we go to bed and when we go out of the house.... and this got me wondering as to what you fellow mylotters do? Do you turn your christmas tree lights off when you og to bed or go out of the house? Happy mylotting Your pal Anne18

Every time we leave the house we turn off all the lights including the Christmas tree we leave it on when home and awake when a sleep and out it's off. I don't want my electric bill going up too high.

We have one little light on my daughters room but other wise all lights off. If one of gets up in the middle of the night we don't need lights to see. Humans were born with night vison and sleeping and the waking up my night eyes are one even as a wee little kid.

We won't usually leave the lights on. It may happen that sometimes we will. But as a general rule of thumb, it's not something that we'll do very often. We prefer turning the lights off, when we go to bed, or something like that.

It is true that it's safer to turn them off. You do raise a good point.

I think it is safer to turn the lights off on the tree, plus you are saving as well. Why have them on if no one is looking at them?

I have worries about some things being left on when I am not home and that is Christmas lights and fans, and when I go to bed I turn them off as well. There have been a couple of fires here in Melbourne lately caused by Christmas Tree lights, they showed on TV how cheap, nasty and dangerous some Christmas Tree lighta are...

Sometimes, but not always because if I am going to be gone a long time, then I can't. I don't have timer for my lights (I wish I did because that would be great), but I just turn them on myself.

Oh, always, but some people don't know to abide by those rules.

People should read the rules, and they should print more in newspapers and talk about it more on the news

We also have no timers, we just turn ours on and off. We have brought some new lights for the tree this year and they are run off batteries, but you still need to use the same safety rules

Yes we also turn our Christmas tree lights out when we go out or go to bed. On the strings of lights it basically say they are safe, that they don't have much wattage, but after awhile you can put your fingers on the light bulb on the Christmas lights and you can feel the warmth. One just doesn't know really how hot those lights would get if you left them on while you were gone for several hours or while sleeping overnight. I look at it this way, why take the chance. Plus with the economy the way it is, it is better to shut them off instead of raising your electricity bill.

Right, no need to take a chance on starting a fire, losing your home, etc. And in this day and age it is always nice to save a few pennies. Have a nice day.

The only time my X-Mas tree lights are on is when I am in the house. I always turn them off if we aren't home. That to me is a safety concern. The only lights I normally leave on if I am not home are the ones outside in the lawn, since we normally decorate it during the X-Mas holiday. My hubby normally puts the outside lights on a timer, so they turn off and on by a certain time.

Actually there isn't really to much of a difference in the bill, every year put up our lights outside and our X-mas tree lights in the inside and the bill is normally $5 to $15 dollar difference during the month of December, but then again since it is winter we also don't utilize the A/C like during the Summer so I guess it kind of compensates.

Although it is much more beautiful that the lights will be on all the time on the Christmas tree. However, it is not safe to keep it on when you go out. The accidents may happen anytime. It is better to turn off the lights when you go out. Besides, it is much more environmental. I love China

hi Anne for safety sakes I always turned off the Christmas tree'light when going out or when going to bed as they do dry out a real tree and too runing them costs some money too so why waste money at night or when you are not there to enjoy them anyway? I also turn off lights in our room when we are going to be d as a haitg.

I turn them off. (Every year) I've been meaning to get one of those timers at Wal-Mart that switches off the power to lights and decoration at certain times. But I always forget, so I resort to turning them off at nights. And when we leave the house too. Same with halloween. This year we had a pop up which at the front of the house. I manually turn the blower off at night.

Hello there my dear sis, Yes the christmas tree is here in our house, not a real tree, twins put it up sunday afternoon and dressed it while hubby and other son were at football. It does look so grand. It's ok you can share our christmas tree. No we don't waste the energy either

People like to pimp up their home and leave the Christmas lights on so that who ever drives past will observe the amazing lights you have up. But of course it's pretty risky and very money consuming with all the electricity your wasting. The more lights you have blinking out there, the more you'll get on your electricity bills. But it's quite nice to look at the pretty lights when you're driving home at night, it really lifts your mood. I put up Christmas lights at home outside on my trees. The thing is, I use solar lights. So pretty much you just stick a solar panel somewhere in your garden in the sunlight and Christmas lights are attached to the panel. Leave it for the whole day and by night time, they'll start blinking at night and you save heaps of money. As the lights run on solar energy, you don't have to spend a dime. They were quite expensive when I bough them but now I reckon they're rather cheap now. You just have to buy them once and let the sun do the work for you free of charge. It's quite safe too.

Hi Anne, I turn off all lights for the night when I retire. If I am leaving the house for a short period of time, I turn out the inside lights, but leave the exterior lights on. My reasons are for safety, just like you describe.

I recomment that they turn them off when they leave and before going to bed. My husband was on his way home from work one day and a tree was on fire outdoors. Mostly smoke. He and another guy stopped. He threw dirt on it and the other guy found where to unplug it. They called the fire dept. who checked everything. They left a note on the person's door. He called to thank my husband. The tree was a foot away from the house. If my husband and the guy hadn't stopped, his house would have been on fire in no time. The tree was very dry near the lights. A squirrel must have knawed on the wires or maybe a mouse.

I used to years ago but after hearing of so many fires i quit doing it. I even turn off the lights when i go to bed. Too many fire engines going by this time of year for my liking. Better safe than sorry. No renters insurance and it could get nasty. I wouldn't want to lose my things.

No, From what I saw, even though people going out or they are in bed, the Christmas tree lights always on all night long. It is part of Christmas tradition I am not exactly sure though. But I can assure that most people will leave their Christmas lights on during the night time. They might turn it off during the day time.

When I go out I switch of the lights in other way it would be waste of energy. And electricity became so much expensive last few months. But when I'm at home I switch on the lights. I like to see them and enjoy them. I will decorate my tree on 24Th we follow tradition.

Hey come on Anne I've just been commenting on one other of your conversations, you have me chasing around all over the place. Leave the b****y lights off when your out, your not going to see them till you get back and has to plastering the house in lights so that you have an extremely high bill and have to take them all down in the new year. There's enough work to do on the house without making more!!!! Bah humbug Christmas what Christmas. No joking apart well done Anne it's safer to have the lights off when your out and anything else that can be switched off. I can see why they have you round to clean, it's nice to have someone in your house that you can trust. Those children should be able to manage without lights soon.

HA Ha, hoping you getting fit chasing me!!LOL Its normally me chasing celticeagle all over the place!!! When can I come and clean your house then? Have some spaces free!! You would have to go out while I was there! Only because we would have a cuppa and chat too much and get no cleaning done!!! SShhhh I quite like the landing light on alnight as well. Sometimes I leave the bedroom light on if I'm having problems sleeping.. its like a comfort blanket and when I sleep the light on doesn't bother me at all,
