Winning the lottery....

If you were in the shoes you are today and happened to decide to buy a lottery ticket today and found out you won over a million dollars, what would the first and second things you'd do and what would you buy first and second? The first thing I would do would be to hire an attorney that also backs as a financial advisor/planner. What I would buy first would be AFTER my attorney and I paid off all my debts at that time I would purchase a new home that would be paid for in full so no mortgage. Next I would replace my car w/a brand new one fully insured and full warranty with a new car for my son for when he's able to drive & a new car for my daughter who will be driving next year. I want to make sure that I'm debt free, I have a home for the rest of my life & my kid's life that we never have to worry about losing and car's to get us where we need to go and will be well maintanced and take care of. The rest should all fall into place after that.

First thing? Pay off my already substantial student loans. Then I would most certainly put away a sum for the remains of my time in college. I'd definitely have to buy a quaint little house, too. As for the rest? Well, I think that I'd have to squirrel that away and at least let some of it accrue some interest in an account somewhere.

I would do the same. I would also pay off all of my student loans. It's all under my debt that needs to be paid back.

Oh yes I have very high amount of student loans myself. It's an awesome idea to invest the money by letting it accure somehwere so you have a back up plan. I think many get so hung up on getting everything they want for the moment and spend spend spend they forget that years later they can be broke and homeless if they don't spend and invest wisely!

Ahaha, good to know I'm not the only one buried under six feet of student loan debt here. But yeah, I seem to have this quirk where I have to save pretty much every penny I get so I can have it for rainy days and emergencies. It's good to invest wisely for such situations.

Oh my God! Is this a sign? I just bought four lottery tickets this morning. I am sure I'll find out tomorrow morning that I won! I am sure of that, SandeeE! Your discussion is a SIGN! I was browsing for discussions to answer when I saw this post. These are what I'm going to do: 1. I'll consult a doctor to have an executive check up. I have a problem with my bone structures and they should be treated as soon as possible. Aside from this, I sweat a lot. They say this is hyperhidrosis. This really hinders me from doing any activities if I am not in an air conditioned room. I can no longer teach because of this. I have other concerns with regard to my health which I cannot discuss here. But I'm always acting as if I'm very healthy. I'm not. I think I'm abnormal. Everything in me is abnormal. I'll undergo surgery if necessary. 2. I'll deposit money for my two siblings, their sons, and my parents. I'll also hire a private nurse for my mother who is diabetic and is also suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Then, I'll also hire a housekeeper for them, for my father and mother. 3. I'll have the fence of our house fixed so that we can already let our three dogs roam around. 4. I'll visit my two siblings abroad, and I'll get a personal tutor for them. I want them to learn Personality Development. After this, I'll let them put up a business where they'll manage. I can still add more if I have already finished those four. I will also help the poor, why not? But my first concern is myself and my family.

I wish that I won the lottery because the first thing that I would do is pay off all of my debt. I would pay off all of my bills, I would pay my family members back, and I would just pay back everyone I owe. I would donate some of the money to JDRF, Sigma Tau Delta, AAFA, and St. Jude's Research Hospital. Next, I would fix my whole house, and I would fix my car and make it like new again. I'm not asking for much here.

I too think I'd have to donate to St. Judes. It's one of my most fav. charitable donation places. Great ideas on what you would do if you won the lottery.

I dream about winning the lottery all the time. For me, the biggest thing would be the fact that I would be secure in my retirement. I wouldn't have to worry about having enough money to live comfortably for the rest of my life. I would spend some of it up front though. I could use a new vehicle and I would invest in a modest home, but nothing lavish. I might go a little bigger if I hit the lottery for multi-millions instead of one, but I would never get ostentatious. I have dreamed about hitting the lottery really big, like 40 or 50 million or something, so I could have fun giving money away. I would like to be that well off so I could donate to charities or causes I believe in. It would also be fun to be a "big tipper". I would have a blast leaving a huge tip to a waitress that did a good job or and unsuspecting valet. It would make me feel good and I know it would make their day too. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming about it for now. I keep buying tickets but haven't hit the big one yet.

I think it's awesome how you wish to spend your millions. I like the giving back thing a lot. Being a big tipper would trully make someone's day and would be fun. Your funny about the house part because I too wouldnt want a huge lavish house myself BUT if I trully had millions and millions and I could afford the upkeep an the maid's and all that I would love a mansion type home. But I'd have like three guest houses with full two bedroom, bathrooms kitchen etc. for any family member or friend that neeed a place to stay to get on thier feet or whatever. THAT would be a dream come true for me.

If I were fortunate enough to strike the big one and find myself richer by a million bucks I would definitely be extremely elated. I would immediately share my joy with my loved ones. They are very important to me even more so than the money. So the first thing I would do is celebrate with a wonderful dinner with them. Next I would settle my house mortgage as I will then be able to save on the interest incurred. I believe that this money must be made to work as soon as possible. If I don't then I'm afraid that I may lose it. You know the saying "Easy come easy go". I would donate to the less fortunate and help to ease their burden. Next I would think of a plan whereby I can generate funds with the capital I now have. Examples would be bank deposits, buying of value stocks, investing in good homes that can generate reasonable income and so forth. I could make a whole list of such investments that I can put into action.

That sounds like a great plan you have. I like the investment part as many of us must think the same way and plan not just for today but for years to come too. I mean like you say easy come easy go you can also see it as yes I won but chances are I'll never win again something like this so best make the very best of it and make it last as long as possible. : ]

Not only once did that thought come to my mind, just for fun and entertaining a mind depleted of hope of becoming a millionaire...The first thing I'll do just in case I win a million dollars pot money, well, deduct from it the necessary things to be deducted like taxes and portion to charitable institutions and religious groups. Make a bank draft out of it, then deposit the money in a reliable bank...just have enough enough amount to spend...Then the second thing I'll do is to transfer to another place where no one knows me and my family...the next thing will be planning where to allocate part of the money, like in buying a new house, a brand new car...and perhaps, putting a money lending business...

I can see your feeling's on winning the lottery is down. But if you assume you'll never win you won't. You gatta remember it happens to the best of us and if you don't try YOU will never know. So go buy one ticket every lottery draw. Don't invest to much so you don't loose much and won't get discouraged. You could win & you'll be glad you did. : ] Postive bring's positive

That would be so exciting. So, the first thing I would have to do is to go to one of my favorite coffee shops and have a nice cup of coffee, medium size, to calm myself down. While sipping coffee, I would start thinking what to do next. The most likely thing I would do is make a sizeable donation to one of the international charity organizations which is helping needy people in different parts of the world, such as World Vision !

MOST Definetly would donating a huge chuck to charity is a very awesome idea. It would be nice if our donations would be the exact amount needed to actual discover the cure though huh? LoL. It's so worth it to donate and I'd probably pick between several cancer sites, St. Judes and for the lupas foundation. Maybe w/no job since I'm rich I'll volunteer every week at each place too : ]

First off, I would deposit that huge money to my bank account. Then, I'll think of a good franchise (proly a fast-food chain) to have my own biz. Lastly, I'll pay all my debts and buy something for me and for my family.

Investing in your future when you win is a big mistake if you don't. Money comes and goes and I've seen many get a lot of money and not spend wisely and end up just as broke as they were before they had the money : [ Good choices.

Money for many people is a measure of happiness, but in my opinion it's a support to achieve happiness. Perhaps it would be nice to win the lottery with a lot of money...life would be easier with a lot of money. May be I'll direct to deposit in bank, and take interest each month for the necessities of life.

There ya go. It's so very true that having the money is not going to buy all the thing's in life that will makeyou happy but it's true that money can help elviate time so that you are able to enjoy life more, enjoy your family & friends more, be able to have more time for church events and community activities or to be able to volunteer places.

The first thing I will do is to buy a car, it's a dream come true... and second is, I want to franchise or put up my own business. So that the money I won will not just for spending but also it will grow and most lastly, I will put up foundation that will help the poor one. A foundation that will help poor one to have their own small business.

My husband and I have talked about this numerous times. Although we'll never win LOL got to buy a ticket to win hehe. After winning, we said we would pay off all of loans and debts. Our house, my truck, and our small loans here and there. THEN we would have us a new home built and get rid of our double wide. It wouldn't be a state of the art house just something big enough for all of us and spacious enough for everything we have. It would be just a nice brick house, nothing extravagant just homey :) Once that is done, we would put away enough money in a bank account for the boys where they'll be able to go to college where they wont and we wont have to worry about it.

A house that's homey is just what I think. I mean it would be grand to have the mansion type house BUT to clean it and deal w/the maintanence is very expensive and hard to deal with. I would like a home that's big enough to have 6-7 bedrooms a room for a theatre and an indoor pool room. Of course a wonderful beautiful kitchen but again not something that has like solid cold or crystal chandeliers or would be so extravagent it would be on CRIBS lol..But I would want most of all that my kid's and I were taken care of for life as far as educations, home, vehicles and finances.

Its so nice to think but the first thing I want to do after I got the money and save some on the bank is... I will go to the church to pray in our God for such a blessings and give some donations to the church and for those street children. And The rest is to fix all the debts and buy a own home and lot for my mom, etc. and share the blessing I received.

Yes giving back to your church and family is so very important. Once my Dad's home was completely paid I'd also give money to my twin brother and older brother to ensure they didn't have to sacrifice to much over the next few years. I love to give and this would be the worlds most amazing opportunity to trully give back and pay it forward !
