Do you always wear a seatbelt when you are driving?

My husband got a fine today. He was driving without a seatbelt again and it was the second time that he got caught by the police. I was so mad at him. I am worried about his safety and I am sad that we have to spend money on the fine. That way we have less money to spend on christmas presents and other things. Last time he got caught he wasn't wearing the seatbelt because he found it "uncomfortable" to to use it. I don't understand that, I think that safety is much more important. Do you always wear a seatbelt when you are driving? Have you ever been caught by the police because you were driving without a seatbelt?

I dont want to be arrested, so yes I always wear seatbelt, plus its also for my own good, people survive accidents because of seatbelts. If I have more money, i want to install airbags in my car too cos it will be better than safe than sorry,.I think I am a responsible driver,I never had a traffic violation (if I'm doing won, I'mnot caught) My car is already ugly, So idont want to make it worst, I avoid doing traffic violations as much as possible.

I hope that my husband will also become a responsible driver, he has done several other things that he could have gotten a fine for if he had been caught. One of the things that I am angry about aside from the seat belt is the fact that he often uses his cellphone while he is driving, I think that is very dangerous. Our car is also quite ugly, because my husband had an accident last year. The auto mechanic didn't have spare parts in the right colour, so now our car is mix of different colours

Although I don't drive, whenever I'm in someone's car, I always wear a seat belt. It's a habit that I have. Not only that, but I feel a lot safer wearing a seat belt, when I'm in a car.

I also feel safer when I am wearing a seat belt and I never drive without it. Ever since I was child it is has been a natural part of driving, because my father was very strict about that and he refused to drive unless we were all wearing our seat belts

YES! If you don't, then you are just doing yourself a disservice. I have been in at least three or four accidents, and my seat belt actually saved my life in one of those accidents. I was in an oil spill accident, and my car and my seat belt saved my life. The seat belt kept me from being ejected from my car, thrown through the window. I always wear my seat belt when driving because you never know when something horrible could happen to you, and that seat belt might be the one thing that will keep you from being thrown through your car window. This has happened to people too, if you think that I am making this up.

I am very happy to hear that your seat belt saved you when you were involved in the accidents. It is scary to think about the things that could have happened without the seat belt. That is main reason why I get angry at my husband when he drives without his seat belt. He was involved in an accident last year. The car was damaged, but fortuneately he didn't get hurt. If it happen again he might not be so lucky, so I think it is really important that he starts wearing his seat belt.

My husband also finds seat belts uncomfortable and he doesn't like the feeling that he gets when he is wearing it, but I think it is important to wear it whether we like it on not, because it might protect us from serious injuries if we get involved in an accident. My husband had a car accident last year. The car was damaged, but fortuneately he didn't get hurt and neither did the other driver. If it happens again we don't know if he will be that lucky again and I am going to do my best to persuade him to wear his seat belt every time he drives.

Once, and then I decided to always wear it. Be careful your insurance rates can go up too. I don't always like them but some cars have better seat belts than other ones. Nascar cars have better ones on each shoulder, the ones we use don't always work the best, like air bags but both are better than windshield restraint, that hurts! It is much easier if a belt feels good on your person. This trick is illegal and I am not officially recommending it. If a law breaker places a folded cardboard in between the clip that holds the upper part of the seat belt and the clip - the belt will not stay tight. This will make it feel more comfortable if there is a little slack. That is why it is illegal for it will not work correctly in an accident but might act as a pacifier for a short period of time so he can get used to it and get over his problem. The lap belt part stays tight and if you pull on the upper belt the cardboard will fall out restoring the proper functionality to this safety device. After you get used to a belt and it is comfortable, a habit is formed and you end up never thinking about it again. I've actually tried to get out of a car with it on because I forgot it was there.

Hi Bluedoll! Thanks for your comment. I hadn't thought about the difference between the seat belts in cars. I think he really needs a to find a way to get used the seat belt. I hope that it will become a habit and that he will use it without thinking about it, because I am worried about his safety if he keeps on driving without a seat belt.

Yes, it is a warning for him. I hope that he takes is seriously this time. He has been caught once before and right after it happened he wore his seat belt every time, but when some time had passed he stopped wearing his seat belt again, and then he got caught the second time.

We werent wearing seat belt very often as there were no strict rule in our place .But recently they have made it mandatory for both sitting in the front to wear a seat belt .So we were warned twice for this.I agree safety comes first then think about being comfortable:)

In the past there were no strict rules about seat belts in my country either, but that has changed we and today we always get a fine if we are caught without a seat belt. Today the fine is about $100, but in 2012 they are going to change the fine and we will have to pay about $200 if we are caught without a seat belt. I hope that my husband has learned from the experience and that he will remember his seat belt from now on. I am worried about is safety if he keeps on driving without a seat belt because he finds that more comfortable.

In my home country driving laws are very strict and every teenager and adult must wear a seat belt in a car that is moving along. The parent has to have babies and children in safety seats. The child is under 12 years old for that type of protection. If caught without wearing a seat belt there would be a fine and possibly points on the license. To me safety is very important and I feel totally comfortable with wearing my seat belt. I also have dog harnesses that get connected to seat belts. So all my family stay safe in my car.

In my country the laws about adults and children in the car are also very strict. It hasn't always been that way, when I was a child there weren't as many rules as there are today and my friends' parents didn't have seat belts on the backseat. I found that a little strange because in my own family we have always used seat belts.

Hi Porcospino, I sympathize with you about your spouse not wearing seatbelt whilst driving. The paying of a fine is one thing but saving of a life or many lives is another. The thing is when the government made it mandatory to put on seatbelts I felt 'uncomfortable' at first. However gradually I got used to it and it became second nature. In fact if I don't put on the seatbelt now it just doesn't seem right and unsafe and I feel downright uncomfortable. Isn't human behaviour strange? Anyway I guess you'll have to keep reminding him and get mad with him until he complies fully and get used to it which I'm sure he will in time. Have a nice day.

Fortuneately the situation has improved since I started this discussion and today my husband wears his seat belt most of the time. Sometimes he forgets it and when that happens I remind him that he has to wear his seat belt every time. I am less worried about his safety today. You are right the fine is one thing, and of course it is annoying to spend the money on that when we don't have much money, but his safety is the most important thing. He has been involved in a car accident in the past and in case it happens again it is important he protects himself, it could save his life.

Hi porcospino... We had to wear seat belt when using personal car. Especially the one who seat in front seat. If not will get fine by police and its taken time and money to get our driving license back. But no regulation used in public transportation.

I always make it a point to fasten my seat belt when I am about to drive. It has been automatic for me ever since I consciously started to make it a habit. I guess, you have to condition your husband's mindset regarding wearing his seat belt. Also, most cars do flash a sign whenever one forgot to fasten their seat belts. It is a good reminder for drivers in a hurry and on the go. But I think, in your case, you will be the one to act as the reminder for your husband to force him to fasten his seat belt every time he is driving!

It has been some months since I started this discussion, and fortuneately my husband has started wearing his seat belt. He still forgets it every once in a while, but most of the time he remembers it. If he forgets it I remind him to use his seat belt. I hope that it will become an automatic habit for him. It is good to hear that you also use your seat belt when you are driving. It is important to think about our safety when we are driving.

My crazy husband got 3 seat belt tickets before finally starting to wear one! I told him, you would think you would have learned the first time. He is hard headed so he only learned after the 3rd time! My husband said it feels like the belt is choking him. I told him too bad, we cannot afford these tickets and it is more safe! I always wear my seat belt in the car, not because of fear of a ticket but because I feel like it can be safer...

I have found persons who suffered accidents, driving without giving priority to seat belts. Similarly persons who remitted fine for driving without wearing seat belts are found again driving in the same manner. I think it is an unwanted negligence. I give importance to it more to avoids fine than bothering its safety aspects.

My husband used to be like that. He got fines for driving without his seat belt, but he kept on doing it because he didn't think that he would get caught again. Last time it happened I was very angry at him, because we had discussed it many times and he knew that I was worried about his safety. Fortuneately he has started wearing his seat belt today. I think that he is more worried about a new fine than the accidents that might happen, but the important thing is that he wears his seat belt.

I was always bought up to wear a seatbelt so always have done. But when I first started driving I wasnt ever bothered about my passengers until I had an accident one day. I wrote off my car quite badly, but fortunately myself and the passenger wearing a seatbelt were not injured. the other passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered bad head injuries, and ever since ive been making sure everyones belted up before even pulling away!

Your story is proves how important the seat belt is. It really could mean the difference between no injuries and bad injuries, and I don't think it is worth taking that kind of chance. I hope that my husband will start wearing his seat belt. Last time he got caught without his seat belt, he wore it every time the weeks after he had been caught, but today he doesn't wear it every time.

Yes I wear a seatbelt all the time when I am driving. I do it because I know I am safer wearing one. I hope I never get in a bad accident but as least I'll be wearing a seatbelt! I had to ride in two friends cars last week when I had my car in the shop. Found out I couldn't get the seatbealts on! I have gottan so fat I couldn't get them on! I felt embarressed! Starting in 2012 it is time to lose some weight! I don't want to have that problem again!

Hi Porco, i hope your husband will start to like to wear seat-belt whenever he wants to drive. In fact, he should always think for the safety of himself, whenever he was driving in a car. In fact, myself don't really like to wear seat-belt as well. But, i don't have other choice but to wear it whenever in the car. Because my country's rules regarding driving matters is very strict and we will get heavy fine if catch by police. Even my son had started to develop this interest to wear seat-belt after seeing me and my hubby wear it whenever we are in the car. Hope from now on, your hubby will start to wear his seat-belt. Hope you still able to plan a wonderful Christmas celebration on a limited income.

I wear my belt every time, whether I am a passenger or the driver. If I am driving, I make sure that everyone is belted in before I start driving. My three year old reminds people to buckle up. If it is so uncomfortable, buy one of those padded things that goes over the strap.

Just driving! - An illustration of happy driving.
Porcospino: I'm no better than your husband in complying. . The only saving grace [not life saving, ] is that the cops in our place haven't really been on to checking seat belt yet because there are far too many basic violations to contend with. But on a serious note, I think negligence is a bad thing. The Company I work for has an avowed safety culture & they insist on a personal safety plan for all employees. The low guard on a premise that it will not happen to me is kind of unwise thing to do.
