Maybe your computer have been hit by a virus causing it to restart itself. It is best that you format it and clean it, do not forget to install anti virus and update it regularly. But if you want to still fixed it try to run a command "shutdown -a" then install hijackthis and remove the one that you suspects that causing it to restart. Run also ccleaner to clean it and look for it start up menu disable the program that is unnecessary to start whenever you open your computer.

Yes, if the problem is indeed caused by a virus or malicious software, the best thing to do at this stage would be to reformat the hard disk and reinstall the operating system. However before you do this make sure you save all your important data and files as this reformating exercise will erase everything on the hard disk. If this doesn't work then you may have a hardware problem. I had a similar problem before and I at first thought it was a software problem but it turned out to be a problem with the RAM. After I replaced the RAM the problem of frequent restarting was solved. Your problem may be different but only detailed trouble shooting can ascertain and fix the problem. Good luck.

As in the question shskumbla said that it happens in ubuntu so therefore it is unlikely to be due to a bad operating system or a virus. The problem is more than likely a hardware problem, eg Power supply or even RAM. But leaning towards power supply.

I'm coming in later on this discussion so I see that you've already tried reformatting. That definitely should have eliminated the virus cause. My first thought would have been to check your hardware. Have you changed anything recently? Have you installed new drivers? When does this happen? Does it matter what application you are in? You would have to answer those questions first. A virus would restart randomly or right after finishing loading usually. Time the restarts to get more information.

If you're dual-booting (if you have to select Windows or Ubuntu when you start your pc at the black screen) and it's still randomly restarting I would think it might be a hardware device driver problem. If you're starting Ubuntu after you've booted into Windows then it might be a virus. Viruses don't work the same way between Windows and Linux, but if you're running Ubuntu as just a live partition within Windows then Windows is still running in the background and the virus could be active and restarting your pc.

maybe there is a problem with your power supply. I had a similar problem a while back with the computer restarting all the time.

Actually, I too used to have same problem and the I seen again with windows vista and win7. In additions to protect your computer against virus, I recomment upgrading your windows version. Win vista and version 7 are very stable!

I am also using UBUNTU in which restarting of my computer takes more time; also virus attack is negligible. So am using it. Thank you for your suggestion

I've been using Chrome and have had no such problem. I switched to Chrome because I found it to be faster than IE. I did have a problem with Shockwave crashing on Chrome but I found out that that was because Chrome has it's own Flash addin. You need to disable the Flash the comes with Chrome to avoid that problem. I recently reloaded Firefox to try it again. I had problems even starting it that last time I tried it.

My brothers computer had the same problem. it may not be because of browser. it can be due to virus, computer settings which may have been accidentally set to restart every half hour or due to some technical problem. Please check your settings and see if they are alright.

I think it may not be due to virus. I suspected that reason so I formatted, and tried:also I tried with a new hard disc.My computer have 2 O.S. that is UBUNTU and Windows XP. I am using UBUNTU since it is less attacked by virus.

I think you might have a virus. You should run some antivirus software.
