I was kinda surprised to hear it announced. However if anyone here likes the old black and white flicks from era's gone by will know who I'm talking about. I was mainly surprised because I would of assumed he had passed on long ago. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45804175/ns/today-today_pets_and_animals/t/cheetah-chimp-s-tarzan-flicks-dies/#.TvviGVaVpkY

There are questions about whether this chimp was the real Cheetah. For one, chimps don't normally live that long in captivity. Two, the paperwork related to the chimp was supposedly destroyed in a 1995 fire. Third, the woman at the refuge said her chimp loved women, yet Maureen O'Sullivan said Cheetah always tried to bite her. Lastly there was a link on the website for the refuge soliciting donations in Cheetah's memory. Could that be an attempt to profit on Cheetah's memory?

That indeed is a good possibility that they wanted to solicit people into donations for the sanctuary as many non-profit organizations struggle to keep afloat.

It seems a bit strange. I would have thought that they would have promoted Cheetah as being there all along. That may or may not have brought too many visitors.

There is some controversy about that, it may not be Cheetah. I really enjoyed Tarzan when I was a child and usually watch the movies when they come on the TCM channel. When I finally got around to reading the Tarzan books that the movies were made from I was angry about how they portrayed Tarzan but I guess I'm over it.

I know of the movies because they had alot of black and white movies on tv when I was in grade school so I spent my Saturday's and Sunday's when my friends weren't home watching the old films.

Yes I was surprised to hear that he had lived so long, that is very good for a chimp..he must have been looked after very well.
