How to get rid of hiccups fast

Hi guys, Does anyone know of any method of getting rid of hiccups fast? I know of one sure fire way. I'll share it with you here. Get a glass of warm water and take small sips of the water without stopping. Just concentrate on the sipping swallowing action. The idea is to disrupt the hiccuping rhythm. Somehow it'll always work for me. Please share if you have any other method of curing hiccups?

My mother had a very effective method of curing hiccups. She would tell us to "Think of oranges." I have no idea why this works but it does. You picture the colour of oranges and the unforgettable smell of them and, in no time at all, your hiccups have stopped! Try it next time you have the hiccups! Our other method is similar to the one you mention but more difficult (and, if you get it wrong, wetter!) You take a cup or a glass and fill it with water nearly to the brim. Then you put your mouth on the OPPOSITE side of the cup and, tipping it away from you, drink the water. This probably has the same effect as your method because it means that you have to control your breathing and this automatically stops the spasms in your diaphram (which is what causes hiccups).

My mother insisted that it should be only oranges (not lemons, bananas, apples or any other fruit). I can't find any other reference to this bizarre 'cure' but I think it likely that my mother heard it from her grandmother (which would date it long before bananas were common or even known in England). I can only say that next time you have hiccups, try thinking of bananas - the colour and especially the smell. You never know, it might work!

Hi owlwings, I like bananas. Would thinking of bananas work or must it specifically be oranges? Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I have been using almost the same method as you for a long time, and it nearly always work for me. The only difference is that I do it with normal tap water. However, with cool water it works for me too. I try to swallow the water without breathing, as if I breath between sips it doesn't work and I have to start all over again. Hiccups are really a pain.

Hi madteaparty, I agree hiccups are really a pain and at times can be rather embarrassing. Luckily there are so many known and proven cures available. I'm sure someone with a hiccup problem will be able to find one that works for him/her by reading these posts. Thanks for sharing.

I don't have a better way. Usually I will drink lots of water and my hiccups will be gone soon. As holding the breath for a long time is not easy, even if it can solve the hiccups, too. I love China

Hi youless, Yes, drinking water seems to be the most common and easiest cure for hiccups as seen from the responses so far. I agree that breath holding is not easy and does not work for some people especially small children. Thanks for your comments.

Mine is similar. I drink anything but hold my ears shut and carefully pick up the glass and take 7 sips without stopping. swallowing each one and then taking another right after. It works 99 percent of the time! lol I have taught it to many of my friends too.

Hi TrvlArrngr, Interesting but how do you hold a glass of water and shut your ears at the same time? Do you need someone to help you?

See i cant tell you that how you can stop your hiccup but i can tell you how to stop others hiccup. its actually very simple. try to divert their attention. once i was having a continuous hiccups and then i tried everything , nothing was helping. I was sitting with my mother and sister. All of a sudden my sister complained to my mom that she has lost some money which was kept under her bed and then she told her that it was me. i couldn't believe that she just said that. i was so angry in a jiffy. and i fought back in a strong voice saying that i have not done that. And then my sister laughed so loudly. and then i realized voila my hiccup was gone. I loved this trick.

Hi vishalssgk, A very interesting post. This method should fall into the category of "distraction" but instead of scaring the person (which I think is quite difficult to do) this approach is quite creative and sounds better. Thanks for sharing.

One of the weirdest ways someone has cured me of the hiccups was to suddenly bust out a really weird question that made me stop and focus on it. Apparently the act of putting so much concentration on the question caused the hiccups to just vanish. The other way that I use when bizarre questions aren't at hand to ponder is to exhale and hold my breath, but I guess that's a relatively commonplace solution (though most people I know inhale and hold).

Hi polaroidsredwine, Again this is a variation of the "distraction" method. I guess by getting the person to concentrate and thinking hard will do the trick. The breath holding method doesn't work for some people even if their face turn blue from too much breath holding. I guess such people need other ways. Have a nice day.

I'm just going to share to you the thing that my professor told me.. She told me that there some ways to get rid of them.. 1st- USE SOME KIND OF PAPER BAG, try to inhale and exhale into a small paper bag. it will increase the amount of carbon dioxide in your body.. 2nd- DRINK WATER- just slowly drink water while holding your breath for about 10 seconds 3rd- SIMPLY HOLD YOUR BREATH, its up to you on how long you're gonna hold it.. 4th- DRINK ICE COLD WATER- AGAIN DRINK IT SLOWLY, with this its changes the temperature of your esophagus.. 5th THE TRADITIONAL WAY, have someone to scare you 6th-TRY SUGAR, try swallowing a teaspoon of sugar, by swallowing it, it affects your vagal nerve which cause your diaphragm to constrict.. 7th-GARGLE, as we all know that gargle prevents us from inhaling which can also elevate the carbon dioxide in our body 8th- EAT PEANUT BUTTER- stickiness can force you to swallow hard.. 9th- COUGH AND SNEEZE and lastly INHALE and SWALLOW. I hope I do help you..

Hello succeednow. It seems that there is better way than drinking water to get rid of hiccups fast. I was taught this by my parents as a child. It does work. Have a good day.

I agree with you, the attention must be diverted, some to this, a sudden jerk on neck, or some one gives a bad news--that is not true, i had hiccups non-stop , for days, reasons could not be known, but licking a mixture of honey with ash of burnt peacock feather helped

The best way to get rid of hiccups is to drink a lot of water continuously. It has always worked for me. If you find yourself without water when you get hiccups...try holding your breath for sometime (as long as you can and try not to get a hiccup). These methods will help you get rid of your hiccups..

Hi russell_21, Yes, looks like drinking water is a very popular method that has worked for many people. I guess this method should be tried first. If it doesn't work then they can proceed to the other methods. Thanks for your comments. Cheers.

I will share you the oldies way they are doing to the babies here in the Philippines. They put a wet thread on the forehead. Funny and unbelievable. Until now, I don't know how that thread connects with the hiccup, lol. The other way is more connected. This is to hold your breath and hold it for a while. This is to make you relax. Hope this will help.

Hi ajagogo, Yes, this wet thread on the forehead cure is indeed strange and hard to believe as there is absolutely no connection at all. Does this method actually work or are you pulling my leg? Thanks for sharing.

Hiccups is a sign of lack of oxygen in our brain. So we need to go in an open space area. My friend said, you can engulf of air through the mouth, then clip your mouth shut while pressing your nose. Then hold your breath for a few minutes, then do it again.
