Is Internet addiction a myth or is it real?

I admit, I spend too much on the net--In fact i spend more time surfing the net than any other activity. I was working for a school paper and came across Internet addiction. I wonder if spending more than 10 hours on the Net is considered normal. But is everybody hooked on the Net these days? How can Internet addiction be diagnosed? Can it be cured? :DD

I actually don't think its an addiction but I guess anything that pulls people away from real life or they spend countless time and money on can seem like an addiction. It could be part of a technology addiction in which the person needs some sort of high tech gadget or they will lose it or feel worse or something like that. So that could be one of the things affecting it.

I presume that the figure of 10 hours you have quoted is a daily figure? If so, then I would suggest that this is rather excessive and you need to think about dooing something else instead. I don't think that everybody is hooked on the net these days. It's just that most people have computers and are on line a lot of the time and communicate with each other this way.

Yes internet usage can be considered as addiction but then it will all depend on the user.. what do they use it for and how does it effects someones health... if some one is surfing the net without actually doing any work or useful thing then it can be considered addiction.. the cure for this addiction is surely possible.. but the damage it might have done on the person's health may not be cured...

it is a nice discussion. People who are addicted will be logging into interest at least three time a days or whenever time is there. For example like me --i have to move out to a college 80 km away waiting for the bus. Now i use these 5 minutes in posting in mylot. i am not too much addicted but addicted to mylot to some extent. When I take up another work to be very important I postpone internet surfing.

I can if you like set up an addiction site for you to join. http:\\www.getyourselfofftheinternetbecauseyouareaddictedandjoinmycourse.com could be the name for it. This course might sell for $199.99 on a monthly basis and run for 72 months. It is good price considering that you will get free chat instruction sessions. You will be required to sign in the morning and sign out after 14 hours usage on a 7 day week, which I know is a little more than you currently are using the internet. What this course will provide is links to research on the subject. After you have you have completed the course - you will be an expert on the subject. So what do you say? Want to sign up now? On the other hand you could consider using your computer for school usage but cut back a little on the surfing. I will assume that this is reason for the lengthy time? I personally use my computer a bunch and it doesn’t concern me because I assign the time for it by choice and that is ok for me. If you have to ask the question though maybe it is time for a little basic computer time management and just forget the above course.

Sorry about the sarcastic comment above if it seemed offensive (wasn't meant to be). I couldn’t help myself I guess. To answer the questions, Is everybody hooked on the Net these days? How can Internet addiction be diagnosed? Can it be cured? I think this addiction is a little overrated in my opinion although there are always going to be extreme cases. Generally though I think people that use the internet do so determined by their needs, desires and free time. The addiction (except for extreme cases) is on the same addiction level as say drinking tea or coffee and is real but manageable by anyone that feels they are tied to their computer. Yes it can be cured and only takes a little will power and interest. I think interest is the key here. Certainly everyone has an interest they can use a computer for and transfer elsewhere if they feel they want more time off the computer. Interests that are only computer based can be temporally ignored.

i don't consider it an addiction because one does not get sick or go through withdraw. it reminds me of how they tried to classify video games as an addiction but then backed off of going that far. yeah one would be miserable if either was stopped suddenly but they would get by without physical pain.

I guess I have more to do. I cook all our meals, laundry, house cleaning, and when I do get on the internet I do it for relaxing in the evening or early morning before I get out of bed. Once I get done the chores I do daily, then I turn to cross stitching or knitting. I have a couple of jobs online that pay you so I spend time on them maybe an hour or so. I am disabled so even a dollar a day is better than nothing to add to your income and supplement. I used to play games but my game time gave way to mylot but I seldom spend over 2 hours a day on the internet.

It's actually real in my part, I for one actually spend 10 hours or more surfing the net, it was like I can live a day with out it, I'm so fond of surfing the net, I guess the cure for internet addiction is to stay much longer than the usual time spent. LOL.

On my holidays, I spend 5 hrs on an average in surfing internet daily. I usually look for different kind of softwares and to test them. I have a large collection of softwares and previously I had a large collection of games too. I used to play almost 1 hrs online some 1 year back. But now I have stopped playing games but still I spend a lot of time on net.

Well, it's all how you feel personally. Many don't consider the internet to be an addiction because it's a necessary tool for day to day functions. On the other hand, because it can often be considered unnatural and Satanic, those who view it that way would most likely be prone to viewing it as an addiction. Really the answer to that question has to be based on your personal beliefs.
