When & What is Thanks giving?

Excuse my ignorance but I'm from Australia I know it is an American celebration on giving Thanks. When is it actually celebrated and specific reasons for this...

Hi, Im belongs to New Apostolic Church in Malaysia. We do celebrate Thanks giving day every first week of October. Usually during this time we will decorate the alter with vegetables, fruits, flowers and also offering.
We do have the congregation in Autralia, the details as stated below.

Well Thanksgiving is an american holiday usually celebrated on the 3rd or 4th week of november. It is celebrated in honor of the first settlers when they run out of food the natives helped them and gave them turkey ensuring their survival which pave the way for america that we see today.
