The latest "based on a true story" movie I saw is my favorite right now, called "Soul Surfer" where this girl who competed in surfing lost an arm to a shark attack. She later on started competing again and won against all odds..:)

Ooh, Goodfellas is on my to watch list! I just bought the DVD off of Amazon. LOL. I love mob movies. It's cool that it's based off something that really happened, I didn't know that! I really liked "Remember the Titans" - I heard that one was based off of a true story as well. Check it out.

I actually have quite a few movies based on actual events in my list of favorites. There are a couple about the capture of serial killers. One is a little known movie called "Out of the Darkness" about the hunt and capture of David Berkowitz and the other is "The Boston Strangler" with Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda. Some of the others on my list would be, "Lean On Me", "The Miracle Worker", "American Gangster", "Shattered Glass" and "Secretariat". One that stands out for me is "Charlie Wilson's War" which is very close to actual fact and stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The two all time favorites for me though are sports related movies. The first one, "Miracle" is the true story about the United States Olympic hockey team that surprised the world and beat the infamous Russian team to take gold in the 1980 Olympics. This movie is special to me because I watched the actual Olympics in 1980 and seeing the movie brings back the emotion and jubilation of the real thing. The other is "The Blind Side", which is the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless kid that was taken in by a well to do family and went on to become a successful football player both in college and later in the NFL. I originally watched this movie simply because it looked like a heartwarming story and I didn't find out it was a true story until the end of the movie when they started showing the actual people on the screen. It just made it all the more special and wonderful. There are probably some good ones that I'm forgetting but these are the ones that stand out in my mind.

There is nothing that I love better than a GOOD movie based on fact or truth. I do not mind if it is somewhat fictionalized or if creative license has been taken. As with many of your other responses, I do not have a favorite. I really like movies about organized crime, terror groups, true crime and drama and historical fact, even fictionalized. I liked Goodfellas a lot. The Godfather was also very good. I love mafia movies. I really liked The Sopranos and now Boardwalk Empire. Both are fictionalized but based on fact. I like anything having to do with revolutions and the reformation. I like those based in different historical times like The Tudors or Dr. Zhivago.

My two favorite movies based on a true story are Wild Hearts Can't be Broken and Hoosiers. They make me cry in some places, but end so well and triumphant. They're just great movies. And I can't say enough good things about Wild Hearts Can't be Broken.

There were so many but If I Had to pick just one.. I would choose Mayerling. It tells the love story of Archduke Rudolf and Maria Vetsera. It is very romantic and tragic! I love Good Fellas too. It is one of the great gangster films ever made. I hope you enjoy the book just as much as you love the film.

I don't know that Goodfellas, maybe I'll download it and watch it. Is it really a nice movie? What is the plot or genre of this movie? Maybe Titanic and exorcist? I like these ones.

I think my favorite movie based in a true story is: "A beautiful mind" with Russell Crowe. is a true story based on the real life of John Nash, a very bright mathematician, than won the nobel prize of Economy, but in spite of being a genius in mathematics, had some mental disorders that made his life so difficult. The movie doesn't show exactly the true life in all details, but in general is the story of this extraordinary man, the movie is very good I like it so much. If I remember any other I'll tell you... Regards...

I love the movie "Invictus" which was based on the story on how the South African President Nelson Mandela united the white and black community of the country by enlisting the support of the national rugby team. Newly elected President Mandela knew that his country was divided politically and economically by apartheid and he believed that he can bring unity through one favorite pastime of the citizenry that is the love for sports which is rugby.

Well I've just watched a movie called, "Conviction" with Hilary Swank taking the lead role. The film is really about her brother who is convicted of murder and sentenced to prison. She is convinced her brother is innocent, (which subsequenrly proves to be the case), and spends the next 16 years trying to get him out of prison. She actually trains to become a lawyer to help him and eventually succeeds with the help of DNA evidence. A thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable film.

This sounds like a really good movie! I'll have to check this one out. I like Hilary Swank. I love movies where people persevere because they know the truth or they try to find the truth. Sounds like she loved her brother unconditionally since she become a lawyer and spent 16 years to prove his innocence and to get him out of prison. DNA is wonderful, isn't it! Another true based movie that Hilary is in is "Boys Don't Cry". She plays a girl who really wants to be a boy. Very touching. People are so cruel. Instead of being accepting of him, his mom doesn't approve and people who are supposed to be his friend bully and beat him up. Very sad. They could have just left him alone and didn't have to be friends anymore, but they couldn't leave it at that. When the girl that he was dating found out, she still loved and wanted to be with him. I love true stories, tv or books. I can't say that I have a favorite. Some of them are "The Miracle Worker"; "The Capture of the Green River Killer" detective Reichert really cared about the victims and their families and he persevered when people didn't believe in him; "The Girl Who Spelled Freedom" wonderful movie about an american family who took in a vietnamese mom and her 4 or 5 children, helping them to speak american and helping them find a home. One of the girls was determined to do well in school and she did; "Not Without My Daughter" (I also read the book - far more detailed than the movie); movies about celebrities, crime, and people who overcome many obstacles.
