I Have A Love/Hate Relationship With My New Lamp

Glitterball Lamp - My new glitterball lamp

Are you like this? Undecided about whether or not you like a new purchase, even though you were well excited when you first bought it? At the moment I am liking my new lamp, especially since it cost £19.99. I have seen similar-looking lamps costing way more than this so I'm pleased from that point of view..even though it WASN'T in the Homebase sale (which looked worryingly short of stock..hope it's not closing down)and it ISN'T red. I did have it downstairs to start with but the light is very dim. This is why it has a new home in the bedroom (swapped with my other lamp that I keep downstairs during the day anyway) and it does sparkle in there too, which is a feature I really like with this lamp. It didn't do this downstairs and I was a bit disappointed at the time. Shows how gloomy it is in here! I dunno..does it look a tad big to you? The shade has a diameter of 10 inches plus there is a shelf (that you can't see in the photograph) above it, which gives the illusion it's in a smaller space. That shelf may be going by the way as we're due to take a few things to the recycling centre midweek. Will I be replacing that shade considering I love the colour red so much? We'll see..but I may see a shade that isn't red but gorgeous and buy that instead. I shall have to wait until I visit Lytham with Mum in a few weeks' time as it has a very good lighting shop that sells shades..which helps!

You can re-do the shade in whatever you like. You can paint it, you can paste pictures on it, you can also cover it in fabric. Why not make your own shade? It would be a ball! I would paste beads on it that would match the bottom, but if you prefer red, you can use red sparkly beads. It would look sooo cute!

Painting it would be the easiest thing to do and perhaps stick sparkly beads around the bottom..I'm frightened of making it look even worse as I DID get Unclassified in Art many years ago. Mind you, I even looked for red beads on the internet yesterday. I love all things sparkly, I must admit. I really wish I had confidence in this area.

I like the lamp, I like the way it sparkles. But I think the shade it a bit to big looking. Maybe something either thinner or more tapered. The color of the shade is okay. I think the big shade makes the lamp look stubby. Go with something thinner and that sort of flares out near the bottom.

Yes, those shades are called something..but I do know what you mean. Apparently, these drum shades (as shown in the picture) are "in fashion" and the annoying thing in this country is..if it's in fashion you have to have it and that's it! I noticed when I was in a store (Macy's I think it was called) in Vegas a few years ago, when I got married..there was a choice with everything and it's the same online in the US as well. Every colour of the rainbow for one pair of shoes, it's great!

Macy's is a store thats been around for many many years. But I always find them a bit expensive. But there are many stores with tons of selection. I cannot believe that you cannot get a selection of shades. Then you should order online from here. LOL.

I do this all the time, I think if I had not bought a lot of things in my life time I would probably be rich, I think it is a must have syndrome

hi janey I love the bottom of your lamp but it needs a curved shade in my estimation to really show off the base, I like that sparkle in it why not a silver shade or a color that sparkles along with the base of the lamp. Red might work too. it is a mite big but I think it is the straight shape of the shade too as it looks awkward paired against the crystal bottom, thats in my eyes that is.

Hi Hatley! I agree with you. It's due to the fact that drum shades are "in" apparently so I didn't have a choice at the time, unfortunately. Besides loving red I love silver too as it's versatile and easy on the eyes lol.

This is like the love/hate relationship I have with my new digital photo frame. It has already moved a couple places in the house. At first it was in the living room, then moved to the bedroom, now it's near the dining room. I guess you can jazz up the shade if it's not working for you. Bedazzle it if you have the means to do it.

it looks fine to me, i think the shade suits the base, and it doesn't look too big. there's no point in buying a glitterball lamp and wanting it to look unobtrusive. the shade seems, from what i can tell in the picture, to have an attractive sheen to it, which is nice. i think instead of a new shade you should buy something else silver to complement it. it looks very nice.

Thank you! You make a good point about the glitterball at the bottom..it's the best feature of the lamp and it's the bit that "drew me in" so to speak, in the shop. The shade is a linen one from what I can gather and it is quite an attractive one compared with some of the dearer ones, I can tell you.

I think the lamp is great...it's size is proportional to the area it is sitting on. If that area was smaller then the lamp would look wrong I feel. I have also recently purchased a new lamp for my bedside. The colour is much the same as yours and so was the price. I love mine as it is a touch lamp - I've never had one before and it feels so good to just lightly touch the base to turn it on and off. That's so much better than groping for a switch each time.

I must admit I'd love a touch lamp too but when I saw how "glittery" this one was I just HAD to have it lol. At least the switch is on the cable itself as opposed to the stem as I'm sure that's why the bulbs keep going on the other one..it's the shock of switching it on and off, which is why I'm glad I can keep it downstairs now - the whole reason for buying another one for the bedroom in the first place.

I like the lamp, it's very nice. I think a red shade would look good with this lamp, and especially if you can find one that gleans a bit, or is glossy. It will help bring out the sparkle of the glitter ont he bottom. I have been liek that where I get indecisive whether I like what I bought or not, most recent it was a haircut! Too little too late.

I know what you mean about a red glossy lamp-shade..they do exist too and they're now made of allsorts of different materials. The thing is, this lamp was - initially - bought for the living-room but looked too big for its location, which is why my original bedroom lamp is now residing in the living-room and vice versa! I'm not too sure if I will have red in the bedroom but I'm definitely having (at least) a red carpet in the living-room. Mind you a red shade would look great against any white wouldn't it so I do have options. My last haircut wasn't very good either. A different woman cut it due to my usual hairdresser being on maternity leave. Due to me being older my hair doesn't grow as quickly as it used to although I'm not exactly bald.

It is a beautiful lamp and I begin to start thinking it will be more awesome in red. White tend to get dirty, no offense. I usually have love/hate relationship with new dresses that I bought. When I tried it at the store I thought they were awesome but when I tried them at home, I began to have second thought about them. I was like, why did I bought this not that and so on.

Glad you like the lamp! Do you know something? I've researched lots of lamp shades on the internet and it's amazing how many different styles there are..spoilt for choice actually! It's mind-blowing! When I go to Mum's in about 3 weeks' time we shall visit a lighting shop and - you never know, I may purchase another one whilst I'm there. Mum found a purple one that's nice. I know what you mean about buying clothes and thinking, "Why on earth did I buy that?" It doesn't happen to me as often now because I don't have that much money to start with, so it's imperative I get it right first time! Thanks for contributing, it's much appreciated.

I like it exactly as it is. I would not change the shade and it looks awesome there. Probably the best way, as you say, is to get the shelf out of the way. But the lamp looks as if it came out of a magazine.

Awww, thanks very much! I'm beginning to feel a bit ashamed of my negative feelings towards the lamp. I'm being silly aren't I?

Thank you so much! The glittery base is what attracted me to it and then I thought, "What a boring lampshade" but there again, if the base is making everyone come out with lovely comments on here, I shouldn't really complain should I?

In my opinion,You have good aesthetic. The lamp is of high grade and inexpensive ,which surely lustres your room.I think the white shade is better than the red one.It looks simple but in good taste.

Thank you. Yes, I think the shade looks a bit big too. I wish I could customise it but it would probably cost more money to do that than to buy a new lampshade!
