As a native American, I am a vendor ot many pow wows and have a variety of crafts that I put together. I have many different ear rings and necklaces as well as I use many animal parts such as deer legs, sharks jaws and many others in my crafting. I am looking for some unique ideas of crafts that I can put together to sell at pow wows. Let me hear your ideas of what you think would be unique and salable at pow wows.

Bracelets are very big in fashion right now, especially danglely ones. Maybe using the shark teeth in a charm type bracelet. Also peyote stitch bracelets with Native American symbols stitched in them, possibly with quill dangles. Also quill earrings with different feathers with Native American themes. (I am fascinated with Native Americans and their way of life and philosophies.) Can you carve the deer leg bones? Scrimshaw is another in craft, at least in California. If you want to get a little on the far out side, there is the possibility of using deer poop in earrings. A neighbor of mine went to Alaska and she must have bought 50 pairs of moose poop earrings. The crafter would pick up the poop and preserve it in poly urethane or the like. Then they put a hole through the poop and hung it on leaver back earrings. It also could be attached to a post type earring. Given some more time I could come up with a lot of other ideas. Another thought is if you have shark jaws that aren't up to your usual standards, you could use parts of it to make earrings with initials carved in them. Just one letter would work. Then I would use some blackening agent to make the letter stand out. I would also do some decorative carving around the letter, like vines and leaves etc. If possible, have some items that aren't super high priced. I have done craft shows for twenty five years and have found that if I have impulse items that are under $5 people are apt to buy. I have bears that aren't up to my standards that I will put out for $5, stretch bracelets that I sell for $1.50 etc. While people are digging through the stuff they are attracted to some of the more expensive items. The teddy bears I also classify as "Grandma bait". It isn't a nice way to put it, but it is items that Grandma's are comfortable spending a few dollars on for a present for their grand children. It also is within a grandma's social security budget so that they aren't over spending when it comes to their income. It's surprising at the end of a show how much money I have made from the smaller items. Small tee pees with a tiny doll with them might be another idea (it's probably already been done). Also if you use deer hide you could do small pouches for the boys, they don't have to be really fancy just a utilitarian type bag that has the drawstring closures. If you can burn a design in the hide that would be cool too. Actually the bags aren't limited to boys either. I love little bags, and use them for jewelry and returning jewelry that I have repaired. The recipient of the repaired jewelry is thrilled with the little extra gift. I do a lot of crafts myself. I am currently restricting myself to four or five crafts to keep the clutter in my home down. I make jewelry, teddy bears, knit, sew, and do some painting. I hope I've helped some.

Most of the ideas that you have mentioned, I already have but the carving or burning of the sharks jaws or teeth is an interesting idea. Most of the jaws that I have are in good shape and I do not wish to take them apart but if in th efuture I get some teeth of some animal that Ido not like the looks of, I will give it a try and hopefully I cxan male a pair of ear rings from themI do have many feathers from a store that specialized in birds so I culd use the feathers and quills in different ways. I do have my prices in the three for a dollar cheap things up to a couple of hundred dollars and many in the ten to twenty five dollar range for all kinds of wallet. And I do gift man of jmy crafts away to people that I find need them more thanI do. I also do a lot of trading at "trade blankets" or just out right trading at pow wows. I try to buy in bulk so that the cost will be less per item and pass nthe savings to the coustomers (except to those coustomers that try to talk me downto less than what the materials are worth, and then I jack ujp the price from them or gift it to a kid that hads been looking at it too, just to get even with the cheap scape). I try to not sell anything (or at least very few) things that are the same as other vendors so that we do not compete with one another but will work with one another so that we all can make some money at pow wows.

Maybe you can help me out. I have been searching for a 14mm cabochon red (dyed) coral piece for a sterling silver ring. It's for a customer and I have been going nuts searching web sites and sending out emails. Do you know of ANY place I might be able to find one? I know it is now illegal to harvest the natural red coral and all that can be found is the dyed coral...providing you can find the piece you need. Do you have any ideas? Thanks sooooo much! P.S. You sound a lot like me. I make teddy bears and will usually give away a couple during a show just to irritate the people that have huge prices on their work and are real stick in the muds.

I am going to a bead and gem show in May. I will look for places with coral (of course) and will collect cards from them. I will provide web sites for you to possibly find what you need too. It is in a major city where there is a LOT of artists and money so there should be a lot of vendors. Here's hoping! I am sending you a friend request so that I can pm you the information when I get it.

I went into a store that sell and grooms birds and asked for any feathers that they might have. I got a bag of feathers, some full feathers and many that are cut. With those that are full, I went and found those that matched well and put those into ear ring pairs, some of the others were so good looking that I made single ear rings out of them. I may make som medicine bags and glue some feathers on those for sell. I am trying to get more rattle snake fangs to put into earrings. I already have several pair of rattle snake rattle earrings. I have some dried gourds to make rattles. I have lots of leather cord so I can put many different kinds of things for necklaces, just may put them on some deer legs that I have and paint them. I am looking for some turtle shells (large snapping turtle shells so that I can put dream catchers in them (not the round cutouts on the back but the whole bottoms (the part of the top shell with out the bottom part of the shell). I already have some sharks jaw dream catchers and would like to get some other interesting natural objects to use for dream catchers. I have many bells that I use for Indian GPS units (to put on children so that the parents know where they are and if in bear country the bears know where you are) They are also good in regallia for dancing in the circle.
