I'm kinda the topic of a rumor in our office...and at first, I could just ignore it and move on with my office life. But lately, things have been worst. They've been making up more stories, which I can attest is not true. If you were in my situation..what will you do? How will you deal when your the in the center of the rumor mill?

Do you have policies at the office regarding rumor mongering? If so, make a detailed report but you have to support it with some evidence and not hearsay. If you don't have the policy, the best that you can do is ignore all the talk. The more that you get affected will increase the hostility. Don't stoop to their level. In time they will get tired of talking about you. Have patience and wait until another controversy explodes in the office which will take the attention away from you. Talk will hurt you and I understand the feeling since I have been in a similar situation. However, if you will continue with the silence, they will think that all the rumors are baseless and will soon die down.

Its true, the more that I explain myself..the more that they get "hostile". And yes, thats exactly my plan B now...to just keep quiet and move on with my life.

I had this former c-employee who quarreled with everyone she thought was talking about her affair. The talks worsened and she lost a lot of friends. No one talked to her for a long time because the employees took sides. Do what you know is right for your life. Stand up for your beliefs and happiness. Remember it is your life and you are responsible for yourself not for what others think of it.

It is very difficult and sometimes we can't do anything. I know how it feels because I have dealt with it for the last 3 years. I've tried really hard to stick it out thinking things would get better and eventually everyone would see me for me, but when there is always someone new taking stabs it doesn't work. I am actually working a resignation and I will be so relieved when I no longer have to come to this job and deal with it. I know that everyone can't just walk away from a job. I don't know if there is anyone you can talk to about things but if there are, I would try that. Keep up with everything and make sure you document what's going on. Depending on how bad things are, the company could be in violation of a hostile work environment.

The thought of resigning actually occurred to me already. I talked to my friends ... to my real friends who stayed with me and believed me. It helps that I have them to talk to. Now...Im gonna try a different approach on this issue. I'll just ignore them totally...I'm not gonna try explaining myself to them anymore.

I would laugh whenever someone told me anything that was said about me. I would say who said that? Even if I already knew and respond..laugh..like anyone believes or cares what they say. I would make them feel childish and stupid for their actions. They want a response from you. They want to upset you. When you continue on..happy and unaffected, they will fell bad and probably stop.

Hi Donsky! I would want to make them look more stupid by ignoring them.

I would tell them to show some prove. To shut up or go gossiping somewhere else because I am not able to work. If this all would not work and it would keep that annoying to me there are only 2 options left over: 1: start a great gossip about the person who gossips the most! 2: leave to a better place.

"Start a great gossip about the person who gossips the most" -- ooooh...this I never thought of. lol. I think I'll go for that as my last option.
