Just had a look at the thermometer - it shows -38C. I live on the second floor, so I believe the temperature might be around -40C. Also checked the converter to Fahrenheit and at -40 it is the same. Still, here in the northern parts of Scandinavia the apartments are warm, but I checked the news and saw that over 100 have died due to the cold weather in Ukraine. Most of them are homeless. And there are a lot more in the hospitals treated for cold related conditions. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16868194 It looks like the weather will become warmer soon, so that gives some comfort. Have you ever experienced such a cold weather??

I hope things have warmed up a bit. Here, we have had a mild winter so far, compared to your area. We had a few days like that but thankfully it was a short period of time. Hope is in the air as we think of Spring. It won't be long now!

6th of February - Its only -27 now.. Let´s see if I can go out and buy some fruit. We have to keep a supply of food in case we have some really cold days. But the apartment where I live is warm. Our daylight lasts longer too and next month is usually a lot warmer. Hopefully my tooth infection will be OK soon, then I will feel like a million dollars.. Yes!! the best is ahead of us. Both spring and better times. Have to start training for the happy dance!!

Hmm..sometimes I consider moving further to the South.. At least they have more daylight in Winter.. Texas?? Maybe have to wait to come there when the earth is a paradise with no criminality..!? Maybe some place in Southern Europe..a low cost country?..but not yet.. Well, we will soon have a wonderful spring and summer here!

Thanks, bjc - my avatar picture is taken in spring when the ice is partly gone and the water reflects the colors of the sky. It is from the Torne river between Finland and Sweden. Today, on February 5th we have about -32C and I don´t feel like going out. Just a short visit on the balcony. But we will soon have a wonderful springtime here and the summer is great too with daylight around the clock..

Nope. I never experience such extreme cold before. I bet, it's very very very very coldxD no kidding. I might understand a bit on how cold that would be. I went to China before, and it's in mid autumn. During the night the temperature dropped to around 2C, and I had a hard time breathing and staying still. It felt like breathing ice. XD Well, -40C would be 20 times the coldness and I believe I won't be able to last for a dayxD no kidding. In my country, there is no winter season nor autumn season. There's only sun and rain xD expected from a Mediterranean zone country. Sorry if I'm rude but, is it terrible? Or have you gotten used to it? How many blankets or coats do you use ? I believe 2C would be pretty or very comforting for you right? Haha! I might need to experience -40C myself one day :D

Hi, Heixyin Yeah, your place is a lot warmer, but if it is humid, you feel the cold much more. When we get this cold weather, it is very dry and we don´t feel it that much. Oh yes, -40 is maybe too cold to be outdoors but I have been out when it was -30C and more - we just have to have warm clothes and breathe in throug some woollen scarf or thick woollen mittens. I have a down jacket and three double pants and warm shoes and always a warm hat, and that is very good protection. I use food supplements that together with rather healthy food helps me to not get sick so easily. It is amazing how we can adjust ourselves with different circumstances.. Even the animals here survive pretty well the cold as they become very active again when the springtime comes..

Waw..Weather with temperatures as cold as I had never before. This is because i live in tropical climates and are at equator. Precisely in Indonesia. There are only two seasons, dry and wet. where i live, the temperature 20 C cold enough. Moreover, up to -40 C. It must be very busy for the move.

Hi, blaze_imf and welcome to myLot.. Yes, there is a biiig difference as I live near the Arctic Circle. We would have even colder if the mountains in Norway wouldn´t protect us from the winds. It might be like Siberia here with -50 or more.. I wonder how people survive there..?? Anyway, we are going towards the spring - no problem so far!!

Yes, I just read an article explaining that people who live in cold climates have preparation for this kind of weather so that many of those who die from the extreme weather actually live in somewhat warmer places but that they are not prepared. Clearly homeless people would not have the resources to withstand extremes.

You right, we are used to cold temperature. I was in Southern Spain a long time ago in January, and their heating systems were not that good. They were more prepared to hot weather.. But some days in January felt so cold due to the humidity. I wish they had better arrangements for homeless people.. Something for the society and/or richer people to think about..??

hi buenavida oh yes I was born and raised in South Dakota on a fam where winters often had days 40 below zero Fahrenheit and blizzard and heavy snow. So I a m familar and thats why I now live in ?Southern California where it does not snow or get that cold.. A lot of Swedish and Norwegians migrated to our state many years ago as I guess they felt at home in our cold winter weather, the summers were wonderful. but I am used to California now and to me 40 Fahrenheit is darned chilly now.I am glad your apartments are warm. so sad for those poor homeless people at least the article tells they have put up heated tents for the homeless so some are getting help Thank God for that. Hope all is well for you have not seen you for awhile on mylot. hugs from hatley

Hi, Hatley! You have really seen much in your life..I had no idea there were such cold places in the USA - but I don´t know as much about that part of the world as I would like to.. Sometimes I wonder why I live here, but it must be due to the Summer that is so special with midnight sun. (You can see some photos in my profile.) And it is not easy to move at my age...but who knows..? I´m OK, thanks but have been very tired due to a tooth infection. Have to eat antibiotics, even if I don´t like to do it, before the dentist can pull the tooth.. At this time it is easier to respond to other people´s discussions than start my own. Today we have only -32C!! Looking forward to Spring and Summer..

Goodness gracious that is cold. I think the coldest I can think of it being here is maybe a -23C. That was cold enough for me and there was a great concern for people here who didn't have homes. There are also people who don't have proper heating systems that are a concern as well. It has been nowhere near that cold this year though. It hasn't been that cold in a couple of years now that I think about it.

-23 is very cold being in a place that probably has a mild temperature - or am I right?? Had to find a map so that I could see where Tennessee is..I am not so familiar with the US states.. I believe it might be cold in the mountains there, of course. Have to find a map that shows how high this place is situated.. Well, we have kind of warmer, as it´s only around -35C now..

this is such scary weather. we in scotland are due to get hit by the cold blast this weekend but i doubt it will reach such frightening tempertures. i hope you and close loved ones are safe and warm. the coldest i experienced was -20 while in Denmark, it was painful in the lungs to breath in through the mouth!

Well, you might get some cold in Scotland too before Spring starts - I hope not as cold as we have.. It is around -35C now, but maybe it is warmer tomorrow. During the daytime the sun may already start warmin us a bit. I remember one year a long time ago when it was -30 almost all February, but lately it has not lasted that long..or do I have a selective memory..?? The interesting thing is that people get used to things like this and the houses are built in a different way compared to Southern parts of the world.
