It is Most Effective the First Time You Use It

I have been wondering for a while now if this happens to just me or if other mylotters have this experience too. Whenever I try a new brand of toothpaste, mouthwash or some new brand of soap, it feels so effective and very cleansing. But after using it a few times I do not feel that effectiveness anymore. This is also true with new flavours of food items like jam, butter and the like. Basically, anytime I try something new it is best and most effective the first time and then it is downhill from there. Do you have this experience too?

I have never experienced that before. I have been using the same toothpaste for a long time now. I use Arm and Hammer. I tried using Colgate and crest. But they are horrible. And I have never experienced that with food either.

I guess you are lucky and you don't get bored of the products or get immune to them.

I like it very much because it works all the time for me. No, with things like tooth paste I do not get bored. Maybe with things like food I do get bored.

I have had this experience some of the time. I don't think it happened all the time. I think we may not be as aware after the first time we try the product.

It is probably down to what a mylotter said above and it may be all psychological.

No, I can't say that happens to me. I really don't notice any sense of "effectiveness" as such. I have expectations and they are always met. As for food, I have my likes and dislikes and I eat a lot of chicken for example. People ask if I get sick of chicken but I don't, I love chicken. I do get tired of some of the chicken stir fries I make and they begin to taste the same but I still love chicken any other way.

That is cool. It seems all your expectations are met and you don't get bored of the products and they never get old. I like chicken too but probably not as much as you, .

I think that it is just a brand new fresh feeling your body is not quite used to. So it is really just going to feel like it is going to be a bit more effective. And perhaps it is going to be a bit more effective. There are just going to be a lot of times where it just seems like something is a lot better, because it is just in fact new. However, it does wear off after a bit of how effective it tends to be. There are just going to be a lot of times where it is just that new feeling that really is the driving force. After a while, so what? It is just something that is lost in effectiveness many times. It is like that with anything we get new. It is just an experience that we might not have had before.

It is just that. When it is new it is all exciting but after a while it just gets boring.

yeah, it could be that the old saying "familiarity breeds contempt" is true not only in people relationships but may apply also to commercial products as well

I think you have summed it all up. That must be the problem. If it is new its all good and exciting but after a while it all gets boring.

hi 2wicelot! probably i had the same experience with yours but i can't think of any concrete example now. the effective feeling you had on the first try might be due to the new taste or the new feeling you had towards the product but then as you got used to it you might say it doesn't have an effect on you now but i think it has still effects.

It is all down to it being new and exciting. After a while all the novelty of it just wears off.

I agree with you, too! Or I notice that my teeth whiten right away the first few uses and then after that, it's like you become immune to it after a while. Perhaps the only solution is to buy 10 different kinds, or one for each day of the week, to switch things up...

That may be a solution to it. It would probably remove any immunity we may get from prolonged use.

Hi 2wicelot! Could it be that that product has achieved its own purpose and that it cant get any better than that?

Hi 2wice lot: I though it was just me So I'm glad to know that this is not the case. Yes! I don't know if the new formula of a toothpaste has better result because it's just the first time that we are experimenting with it but after that caries become more resistant to the new toothpaste. Just a theory ALVARO

From the comments I have read it could be that our senses get used to it and we become immune to it after prolonged use. Someone suggested it could be in our mind and just psychological.

I was surprised by your comment here. I would like to ask, what made you feel they are no longer that effective the second time around as compared to the first time you use them? How can you be sure they are no longer that effective? Have you gone through a clinical or laboratory analysis of them?

No not all. Nothing scientific about my observations. It is just a personal feeling I have and I was wondering if other mylotters felt the same.

I think this is because things age with time. Myself, I don't notice that happening. I do know that I used a new kind of toothpaste and it tasted very good the first time. The next time I bought it, the toothpaste didnt taste as good. It could be because my taste buds got used to it or perhaps the manufacturer changed the ingredients. As for buying something and it changing taste after using it several times, perhaps it's because once your taste threshold is reached, then it becomes a normal blase taste.

I see your point, I was thinking the same too. My taste buds may have just got used to them quickly.

Yes, that happens to me as well. First experience is always the best because it's new, something different from the past. ONce i've gotten used to it, i won't like it anymore and i would return to my favourite. It's the same for everything, from daily essentials to food, drinks or even accessories. I love trying new stuffs at affordable price and if i'm bored of them, at least i get my value of it and i'm not wasting too much money too.

It could just be down to boredom then. May be after using the new stuff for a while we then get bored of it.

Using products for the first time really feels best because you observe it's effects not because you have read how it works but subconsciously your mind has been set that it's the best. Prolonged use of a certain product does bot really mean that it's not working anymore, it's because of the thought that you've been using the product for too long and you're used to it's effects that you then thought of finding a new product that will give you the best effect. The cycle goes on and on and it's usually in our mind. If we view of it positively we will still enjoy and appreciate its effect.

That is a very good point, it must all be psychological. Nice points.

I'm not sure whether these iytems lose their effectiveness when you have used then m a few times but we might feel this way because we have gotten used to them and don't see anything new or different about them. The first time we try anything, it is somewhat special since it looks, feels, tastes different so we feel it might be better than the older things...

That is very likely. The novelty must have worn out after using them a few times.

It may be similar to medication; initially effective, but the effect tapers off after a while. Maybe one's teeth become immune to that particular kind of mouthwash, or toothpaste. Or like anything else, new is just new. Ever notice that first bite of the apple always tastes the best? And what of gum that eventually loses it's flavour over time?

Yes..and I think things lose their effectiveness after a while.....like even my hair spray. Seems it works so good in the beginning then as time goes on it like weakens or something! But also taste... you order something once in a restaurant and the next time you go back it doesn't taste the same.....
