Should I save for college or just go as soon as I can?

I've been out of high school for a while now and I'm thinking of trying to get my associates degree. Should I save for awhile first and go later? Or should I try and get started as soon as I can? What has been your experience? If you went to college later when you have work and family responsibilities. Do you have any tips on how to balance everything?

Save up and don't get into debt.

I agree with you. Saving and staying out of debt is a big thing. I have one more year on my car payment and then I will be out of that debt. Can't wait until it's all paid off. I do not want to take out another loan for a very long time!

If you're in the U.S., you can visit Fastweb and see whether you qualify for any scholarships. Also, the FAFSA (Federal Application for Financial Student Aid) can possibly get you a Pell grant or point you to low-interest loans. If you can attend school and take at least 3 college courses per semester, I'd say jump on it now. I took as many as 18 credit hours while working full time and parenting four teenagers, but I was in my 30s at the time. On the other hand, if the school's enrollment fees are low, taking even one course at a time gets you a step closer to your degree. They do not expire. Best wishes!

Thanks so much for all your help. I will definitely look into the suggestions you gave and see where I can get help. At first I thought it would all be overwhelming to juggle everything and save at the same time. Your example has given me the encouragement I need. You went to college, worked full time and raised four teenagers. If you can do it with that type of schedule I should be able to make it. Thanks again for all your help.

Have you tried filling out an application for a pell grant? That is what I did and I am in my second year of school. So far I get enough grant money that I only had to pay out of pocket one time. Of course since they did a budget cut, I get less now so I may have to take less classes, but it is a big help to me, otherwise I couldn't take any classes.

If you are planning to take classes this fall, it isn't too early to fill out an application. See, we have to fill out a new application every year, and I already got messages from my school, about filling mine out for this fall. The only reason I haven't is because we have to have our taxes done first.

Thanks for sharing that information with me. I appreciate that. I'm going to be involved in this program that will help me save for college. I'm looking forward to that. And then we have to decide if we will be moving so that we will be closer to the college that my husband wants to go to as well.

No I haven't applied for one. But I definitely will as it gets closer to time for me to get started. I understand not being able to take classes without help. It would definitely be impossible for me to take classes without help, unless I had a lot of savings which right now I don't. Thanks so much for your help.

there's no age limitation in learning and education. but maybe if you still have time prior to having your family do it. having a college degree is something you can be proud of though it's not really a requirement for being successful. it gives us something that can not be taken from us and that we can pass through our children.

I agree with you. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me. I really appreciate it. I'm soon to be starting a program that will help me to start saving for the program I want to take. I hope that the program I'm interested in I will be able to complete. I guess as long as I work hard in my classes I should be alright.

Hi Dominique, I can not help you balance everything, but I can say that if at all possible to go right to college, "GO",,it seems like some of us procrastinate for a semester to long and then that urge is not so strong...and if you are lucky enough to get a generous paying job....then it becomes a deliemma.... go or fon't go???? So if I was you I would go asap..."GO"..use some Federal Financial Aid or some other grant buy go....

The thing is, even if you get a good-paying job without college, there's no guarantee that you'll still be employed there in a few years, and you'll end up wishing you had gotten the education so you could transfer it to other places.

@nturecamo you make a good point. It is a good idea to go and get the education you want. That way you can have something to fall back on. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I needed to hear everyone's thoughts on this. It's something that I need to get started, get done and start working in a career I enjoy.

My experience is that it is better to start an education as soon as possible. If you wait, my might not be as motivated as you maybe are now. The longer you wait the harder it is to "go back to the school bench". But thats my experience. Also if you wait until you have family responsibilities it might get hard for you to get then time and money to combine studying and with the attention a family needs.I live in Norway. And here it is not easy to get a well payed job without an education. The ones with education always comes first it seems.

Thanks I appreciate your help. I think that it will be better if I get started soon that way i can get it done and over with. It's only for two years. So that will go by fast, as long as I'm able to keep up with my work and homework it should be fine. Thanks again.

As the above user stated, for an Associates Degree (and Bachelor's) you can get a Pell Grant. I used my Pell Grant for my entire Associates Degree and paid nothing out of pocket. Covered all of the fee sand books every semester AND I got money back. I am almost done my Bachelor's degree and am using my Pell Grant for that as well. We are low income since my husband is military, I get $5500/year to go to school just from that one grant. As far as saving, you should ALWAYS save. You should have a savings account with at least 3 months of bill money, a retirement fund, and an emergency savings (for things like flat tired, sick kids, ect). Then you start savings accounts for college, ect.

That is awesome. I agree it's always important to save and to have some money set aside. So I'm definitely working at that. I think though that it's hard to have a separate savings for everything. So I'm just trying to save everything that I can and if an emergency comes up, take out just what I need. But I hoping that I will be able to use most of it for college and getting everything taken care of that is associated with that.

As I will graduate from college, I just want to say that if your family members do not ask you to get a degree soon, it may be good for you to work a year and than go to the college. Before the college, you may not know clearly what major is you favorite and what kind of job can help you make money. If you can work for a year, you may know the work well and find out what you really want. Then go to college to get a degree can help you have a development in your future career.

Yeah that is good advice. As choosing the right field to go in is difficult. I'm not sure what I want to do. I know what things interest me but for those fields it requires a lot of time. It also will not provide me with the financial situation I'm looking for with the amount of time that I will have to go to school. So I will take my time and think carefully about what I can do and accomplish. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.

well what i can say is, if you have already enough savings to start college then go ahead.you can work in the morning & go to school in the evening or either way.i've known people who went through like this and they're doing well now.

Yeah I will do my best to try and go as soon as I can. I think that the sooner I start the better I will feel, the closer I will be done to finishing as well. I now have some money that I can use for savings and gas for college. I'm looking forward to this new part of my life.

Unless you've been born into a rich family who has some really secure funds, and a plan to put you through college later in life, I would start saving now. These days you never know how and if you will have a dime left in 2 years. The way the economy is going, that is.

Yeah unfortunately I wasn't born into a rich family-lol. I agree with you. The way prices for everything is going up and yet pay is staying the same. It's hard to really know what things will be like in two years. So I'm working on setting aside my online income. That way once I do start school hopefully I won't be stressed about income and I can really focus more so on my education. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.

Go as soon as you can. You'll make enough later to pay off the loans you'll need to take out. If you wait, you'll miss out on several years' worth of opportunities to make a lot more money than you're making now.

Thanks so much I appreciate your advice. It is a good point. That the longer I wait the I'm wasting time that I could be using to be working in that field and earning more. Thanks again. And I hope that things are going well for you in your life.
