Shrimps and vitamin C

Philippines

There's this article that's circulating in Facebook about a woman who died due to arsenic poisoning. Arsenic poisoning shows bleeding from the eyes, nose, ears and mouth. The reason why was she ate a large portion of shrimp or prawn. It shouldn't have been a problem if she's not taking vitamin C. Whoa, scary! So that article served as a warning to those who crave for shrimps but are taking vitamin C. The night before my uncle had a stroke (going two years bedridden now), he ate a large portion of shrimps, and we thought that contributed to causing his stroke. It pays to watch what we eat. And that's why I choose to eat vegetables and fruits than taking vitamins/supplements.

hi neelia first let me say I just don't believe this for a minute. I can not get the correlation between shrimp/prawn and arcenic poisoning..May I missed something.. We do have to be aware of what we eat but I refuse to let articles like this sway me one way or another.... since when is vitamin C a killer....?????????????????

I haven't seen that article yet but I hope it's not true. And I didn't know that eating too much shrimp could somehow cause complications to our health. Shrimp is one of my favorite food and I used to eat a lot of it especially during vacation. We weren't able to eat though this past few months since it got more expensive. Thanks for the post anyways, now I'll research on what complications eating excess shrimp could cause to be more aware of it. :))

I didn't see anything wrong about eating shrimps and its relations to Vitamin C until I've read your post. I still could not understand. I do know that a large portion of shrimp could mean heavy cholesterol and overload of Vitamin C may affect the kidney but when taken both in just one meal, I guess there is more to it. Anyway, thank you for posting this and it really catches my interest. It is helpful for everybody and everyone should know it.

Hi neelia. Yeah I've read that article before. Something about taking Vitamin C after eating prawns can cause the Vitamin C to react with a certain substance found in prawns/shrimp and thus cause food poisoning. I don't really believe in it 100% but at that time when I first read it I'd have to admit that I was kinda freaked out because I love eating prawns and I do take multivitamin supplements. But I haven't really heard or read any article proving it so right now I don't really make much of a big deal out of it. I guess the key is never to take too much of anything. I also agree with eating too much prawns can cause stroke. I've learned that crustaceans have a lot of cholesterol especially crabs and eating a lot of their kind can actually cause high-blood pressure, and also, arthritis.

Yeah, we must be careful with the food we are introducing into our mouth. There are people who get sick when they eat shrimps or prawn. However there are people who likes very much that food. Besides it is not a cheap food. I've eaten it sometimes and luckily without problem.
