Cats Who Think You Own Them

A few years ago, the day we moved into our current house, a small black and white tom cat jumped into the windowsill. He didn't have a collar and started begging for food. We let him in and fed him some ham we had here and a saucer of water with a drop or two of milk. From that day on he decided that he was 'our' cat. Spent most of his time indoors with us, letting us know when he wanted to go back out or wanted more food. We bought him dry cat food and a flea collar and named him 'Dog'. We later learned that his name was 'Wanda' and he belonged to the next door neighbours. We have since gotten a parrot, so we can no longer roam around the house, though we still let him into the sitting room to sleep in front of the fire or cuddle up on the couch and watch TV. Recently we acquired another cat. A ginger and white female, with a collar, who was eating Dog's leftovers from the windowsill where he now gets fed. She has gotten into the habit of sitting in the windowsill every morning, afternoon and evening crying for food. What I'm wondering is this - How many of you also have cats who think they live at your place but really belongs to someone else i.e. not just a stray, but a greedy cat with a whole lot of love to share around different houses.

we have a cat neighbourhood, we have 2, the neighbour has 2 and across the road there are another 3. they own the neighbourhood, it's cats in the hood! some of them strut about with pet staffy bull terriers collecting protection money. all i can say is that the advert is right, thank god cats don't have opposible thumbs, it means they keep dropping thier flick knives giving me time to leg it!

A much needed laugh ajk, thank you for posting. Brilliant. At times like these I wish I could use smilies already!

once you start feeding strays they come in droves, we have a stray here and he visits every day, actually he looks too fat to be a stray maybe he does belong to someone, so i stopped feeding him, the reason i don't let him in my house is because he sprays and i hate that smell, i have even taken to locking the cat door now because he comes in and sprays, eats my cats food and then upsets my cats, it was a problem for a while, then all of a sudden a whole bunch of cats would be sat outside my house, i think they were his kittens that he produced from the neighborhoods cats, they were everywhere, if a cat is fed by people, they will come keep coming back, the one you kept maybe liked your cozy home, it's obvious that he likes you otherwise he would have left by now, and it's nice of you to keep him too

Thanks trinkabelle. 'Dog' the original cat showe dup at the door today, crying to get in and get fed. He subsequently spent 4 hours here eating and sleeping. I don't know how he manages to go that long without heading out to the loo or anything. He insists on being on my lap or right up beside me on the couch, no matter what I'm doing. Full of love...

We're lucky to have an agreement with our landlady that she doesn't mind pets. Sorry to hear that you can't have any at the moment, perhaps some day soon you will.

We have 3 three cats who suddenly popped out of nowhere outside our house. Ever since then, we always feed them and somehow try our best to accommodate them though we don't let them inside our house. Just a couple of months ago, another cat suddenly started to hang-out outside our house. At first we thought she belongs to the family of the first three cats that we have (because of her color) but we found out that her features was different from the others. She also tries her best to be able to get inside our house and just rest inside. The other cats became jealous of her so they also tend to also go with her. At first we were somehow annoyed but we got used to her. We really like her because she acts as if we really own her. Now we decided to keep her :))

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one growing a herd of cats that don't belong to them. Thanks for sharing your experience, you sound like you've got a big happy family of cats!

I currently have two barn cats on the farm that i'm aware of and see on a regular basis. Both are fixed so any kittens that appear are not their offspring. I have seen an orange tom cat from time to time who comes to visit...i know he belongs the my neighbours that live across the field a mile away. Otherwise...often cats that have been dumped along the highway show up for food...sometimes stay or move on.

Thanks for the response saundyl. It's great to hear that the cats are fixed, there are just way too many kittens hanging about these days, abandoned or otherwise. at least the barn cats will help keep the rodent population at bay for you.

I have two friendly cats. They tend to invite our neighbors cat at our home. Funny was our neighbor's cat is now living in our house with my 2 lovely cats.

At least for your sake it's not your cats heading to the neighbours :) Three cats are always better than 2!

Yes, just right now I am about going to have my lunch. My food was in microwave but i didnt locked it. I opened the microwave and see my food gone. Pfff what a smart cat, she took all my food and put the door close.
