As I was reading a health book on how to live longer. I have read that taking Aspirin once a day can help prevent stroke. Is this true? My mom got a mild stroke recently but the doctor didn't mention anything about taking aspirin once a day so she can't have stroke the second time. Do you know anyone taking Aspirin as a form of prevention? Can we take Aspirin even if we are not sick so to prevent stroke?

Aspirin can work as anticoagulant, which means that, it prevents blood from forming clots which can block an artery. Can it prevent stroke, yes, all depending on the blood vessels that is affected. This is because if your affected blood vessel is b then the blood would be able to reach the brain which can lead to stroke. It is also used to prevent heart attack from those patients with history of heart disease like atherosclerosis (fatty plagues are deposited in blood vessel or arteriosclerosis (narrowed blood vessels)since in those patients, there is possibilities that, those blood vessels with plague deposited on it may burst leading bledding which can form clots on the blood vessel. To prevent this aspirin is given prevent the clot from formation. Whether your mum was given Aspirin or not depends on many factors such as whether her platelet count is within normal range or not. Not all patients are prescribed for aspirin since it can lead to bleeding.

Yes, I take a low dose Aspirin to prevent stroke everyday because I suffer from type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. This has been known for several years that taking Aspirin thins the blood which helps prevent stroke or heart attack. You even give an Aspirin to a person who is having an heart attack or chest pain in hopes of preventing the heart attack.

I have learned a lot from this discussion. I will also take note of this and make sure to keep an aspirin as well in our medicine box for emergency.

asprin, bayar, strokes - stuff that helps prevent another stroke
Mild or full blow stroke is a scarey thing to have to deal with. I had a stroke in November 2010 they said I was lucky because it happened in the morning and I went in at 9pm that night. (full blown stroke) I am fully recovered now and take better care of myself. My doctor told me to take bayar or generic asprin 81mg and fish oil tab everyday to help prevent. Even though it is just an asprin your mom should talk to her doctor about it. I was on blood pressure meds and cholesterol meds but have been doing better in getting healthy that I know longer need it at the moment.

thats a new one on me. I take a baby aspirin once daily as my doctor suggesed to prevent a heart attack. I have never heard that it wo uld prevent stroke but if your mom had a light stroke she might also be in danger of a heart attack. taking a baby aspirin once a day will keep blood vessels open and prfevent a heart attack . I have been doing that now for three or fou r years. I would have to research that about stroke as I think they have that wrong.keeping ones blood pressure down helps prevent strokes too

I recently read that women under 50 should NOT take baby aspirin as before menopause we don't need it and it can put undo strain on the liver and stomach. After 50 or menopause, it is suggested for women. Just a note from the AHA (American Heart Association). I guess they know.
