I think English must be the most difficult language to put down on paper. maybe not to speak but so many words sound the same but have different spellings. Do non speaking mylotters find it easier to speak english rather than to write it? some english speakers (including myself) make many grammatical errors so how hard is it for people that have another home language? Aye wood bee sew afrayed two learn a knew language.....do you see how hard it is? luckily i can speak 3 languages fluently. English, American and Australian.

I believe that practice makes perfect. The person who wiling to learn sure his will power help him to learn fast. This is make him to learn whether it is hard. At least English Language can someone to communicate with other people in other country. This is because English known as second language.

sorry victorkish, i meant that your statement that practice makes perfect is an excellent point. i feel the UK sometimes appears to come across as lazy but i hope that is not true. As you can see from my original response, even as a British english speaking citizen i can still make a mess of the english written word.

No, English is my second language. Here in the Philippines, it is the second language that was taught to us since grade school. Anyone can write using the English language but the problem is that there would be error when it comes to grammar. I do believe it takes a lot of time to learn something new. With constant practice one must will learn the language well.

For me, it depends to the person itself. Some are good when it comes to Speaking the Language and Some are great when it comes to Writing. Speaking in English is not that easy because we do have a different accent compared to the native English speakers.

Im from Phils too and we were taught to utilize english as our second language. I find it more difficult to speak english than to put then i writing. I have more grammatically wrong sentences when i speak rather than write. Because in writing i can compose my thoughts well and analyze my sentence construction.

you probably appreciate the effort forigners makes as you have a large vietnese comunity living right beside you. i take my hat off to them for the effort they make. when i go abroad i notice british folk make attempt to speak the local language by shouting loudly but slowly in english!

@ajk111 I love your comment. This is so true sometimes. I used to work on cruise ships in USA, and saw for myself how it looks when bunch of Yankees come to French island, and get offended over the fact that French people don't speak English. I'm not speak it neither, but at least I'm trying to use mix of English and Spanish and lot of gestures to communicate, and not just speak loud and slow.

I don't think English is a hard language to learn. My mother tongue is Telugu as I am from south India. The common language for most Indians other than Hindi is English as there are numerous languages spoken across the length and breadth of India. As a youngster,i found my mother tongue and Hindi more difficult to learn as compared to English. They are more complex.Similarly in High school,i found French more difficult than English. My short coming in English are more due to lack of effort than the difficulty in learning the language.

stine1_v3, i lived in Denmark for two years and they also raised their children to be bilingual. for someone like myself, i find this wonderful and hang my head in shame as i often feel the British are too lazy to learn another language as we expect others to learn ours. in our defence, i think our educational system needs to be rethought as adding a forign language when kids are at primary school would be beneficial.

even though english is somewhat tough, many non speaking mylotters love the english language. nowadays many people don't find it difficult because many countries teach english to their students.for some people speaking is easy and writing is difficult. we can manage to speak well because no one is cared about our grammar while speaking. but writing is recorded in some medium and we should be careful about our grammar. so writing english will be somewhat tough compared to speaking.

I feel great sympathy for anyone trying to learn English as a second language. Even people born in the United States have problems with the language. So many words have many spellings and meanings. Plus the language is constantly changing. My Mom and I had many discussions about learning the language, and that each decade brings more changes to the American (English, Australian) language.

Mandarin is commonly used official language that all Chinese people can understand. But there were a lot of dialects. Some foreigners prefer to consider than different versions of Chinese language. And for the same kind of dialect, people living in different villages next to each other might have different accent. And the dialects in south part of China is so distinctly that people living in the north cannot understand them at all even though they are still speaking Chinese. And for mandarin, there might be hundreds of characters have the same pronunciation.

that sounds incredibly intricate but also incredibly beautiful. i have long thought the chinese letters of the alphabet are almost a work of art. Do you know how many letters are in the chinese alphabet?

I worked as a writing tutor in my university and one of the most common issues we had was the ESL students (English as a Second Language) not understanding different parts of the language. The Asian students, for example, had a hard time understanding articles. They don't have a word for "the" or "a" in their language. Where we say "I went to the store" they translated "I went to store" from their native language. It was one of the hardest issues for the tutors because the was just something we'd grown up understanding. If we were taught why it was at a very young age, long enough ago that we'd forgotten why. So to tell someone who spoke a different language that they needed to add words when we really didn't understand ourselves why we use them, was very challenging. For us and for our clients. Likewise, where we use the same word to mean more than one thing - power, for example, can mean control, authority, or assertion and it can also mean energy, force or electricity. But in other languages, there is often one translation for authority and another completely to mean energy. So, based on my own experiences, teaching writing to people who were not native English speakers, yes, I definitely think our language presents a lot of difficulty for people trying to learn it.

For those who have ardently and painstakingly learnt the language both speaking and writing becomes easy and free flowing regardless of where they come from. It also depends on the opportunities one has to use the language on a day to day basis.

There are some users here who look up to those whose mother tongue is English to learn the language but some of those whose mother tongue is English do not take the trouble to avoid grammar and spelling mistakes and these errors are picked up by these enthusiasts unknowingly.

I see four categories here - those whose mother tongue is English but have no exposure to good English; those whose mother tongue is English and are well exposed; those whose mother tongue is not English but have a good exposure and those whose mother tongue is not English and do not have the required exposure. Of these categories I would place those whose mother tongue is not English but have a good exposure as those who excel in the language. This category would have ardently and painstakingly learnt the language.

All time another language that is not our Native language to Learn is difficult but written without Grammer mistakes and spelling mistakes is take More time. We can able to catch that quickly always it's less Quality compare with our native. We have less Knowledge only in those language compare with our native one. Always learning new language other than our native Language is little Difficult also. I think in my view English also the Same, it's tough to learn Quickly without Spells mistake and Grammer Mistakes. I want to say one think, if we communicate People they understood what we want to say is enough for the Language.

I think what makes English hard is that people tend to use a lot of slang words and these words arent in the dictionary so they cant be looked up. That makes things difficult for people who dont speak English.

Why did you say that English is difficult language and to write where this language is the most easiest to understand and learn. What about Chinese language and words? The korean, french, german, japanese, russian and arabic. They are the most language that difficult to understand and write... I even not write a single words in Chinese and Japanese. Your in the United Kingdom, and I think you know better English language than us here in Asia. But I wonder why you said it here? English, American and Australian is the same as English, my friend. They are only different accents...Even me I understand American English, Australian or even those English accents in London or UK. As far as I know; US,UK, Canada and Australia are not different language they used but English...

I'm from the Philippines and in school, we have a lot of English subjects. Not literally English but teachers do speak in English when discussing other subjects like Home Economics, Politics, Mathematics and a lot more. So basically, we really need to learn that language. That's why I think to some Filipinos, they're not having much hard time dealing with plain English as a vocabulary. But yes, honestly, some are still having wrong grammars. And I admit that I'm sometimes one of them. So being here in mylot practices more my English language.

I'm sorry, but I just have to ask. Do you really consider those three to be different languages? I mean, they're all basically English, just with some different pronunciation, slang and stuff. Anyway, I've always heard English is one of the most easy languages out there. Why is that? Because it has very little complexity, sentences are simple and verb tenses as well. By the way, my native language is Spanish, not English.

Thanks, but what I meant with that -now I realize I didn't even write it... dumb me- was that I can actually write better in English than in Spanish. Perhaps I should rephrase that, I write worse in Spanish than in English, yeah, that's more like it.
