Last month I made a present for my best friend. I made it out of wood. I am thinking of making more and selling them since I am unemployed and I really enjoy working with tools. What I have in my mind is copies of guitar headstocks and putting a clock so it will be useful too and not just decorative. My worries are these: 1. If I copy a Fender/Yamaha/Gibson headstock and selling it online (ebay or other), would I encounter legal problems for copying the design? Note that I will not use logos, just make a wooden copy, full with strings and everything else. 2. Will it sell? No one can answer that, but would you pay 30-35 euros plus posting for a handmade guitar(headstock) clock? I say 30-35 because the parts cost 20-25 euros :( Feel free to say anything.

I think it's a grea idea and if they loom good I'm sure guitar enthusiasts and people who like music will buy it for themselves or maybe as a present for others. The price is always difficult: if you are already paying 25 for materials the you should not sell yourself too cheap. You should set the price depending on the time it takes you to build it.

40€ is a good price for a handmade design. With good price I mean it is cheap as you've worked one ore mere days on it and also spend money in buying the materials. If you do the numbers it means you are making 15-20€ per sale. Don't know if you can live with that...

I want to make some extra money as a start. If it picks up, since it seems like a good idea, it could be a big help!

I have already come up with 5 designs. I think when I star making them I could make 1 per day. Or less :). 3 per 2 days. I guess I will have to sell myself a little cheap. My goal is to make many of these designs, not profit from low numbers. What about you? Would 40 euros be to much?

Most people admire handmade industry, and take them at high prices. You should know the prices of similar things in the market, in order to compete with others and promote your product. There is nothing wrong to imitate any other industry with the development of some changes to it, but when exposed in the market, remember it is a tradition for the basic product. We must be honest with whom we deal with.

Estimating the price of any product is by adding the cost of that product on the estimated profit margin, In addition to other indirect expenses.

I haven't found anything like it and that's why I am thinking of doing it. The price is determined by the cost of making.

there is nothing wrong with it as t is your own work although there may be similarity to other products the important it is your own design and you never imtate other brand name. so you must try to put them in ebay and find a buyer. those who like it would surely recommend it to there friend. until, you form a fan based.

Handmade are bit expensive than machine made and people are aware of it. I guess you can make it thru online store. Regarding the copyright- as long as you made some modification, it won't be a total copy material from the original one. You should have your own distinction, that makes an artist unique from anyone/everyone.

I could make some unique designs of my own, but I have to use known guitar designs. That's what people know and might buy at first.

I ever saw fake Apple headphones that being sold on Amazon. Yes, I know it is fake, because the prize is too low for an Apple headphone, and lots of reviews also claimed that. So I think currently no legal action would be taken if you are copying the design... - but to avoid most of problems, you may make the design a bit different, and tell honestly that it's your handmade. Will it sell? Personally I don't really mind with that price - it's quite good price for buyer, I think :p. But I won't easily buy something before being sure about the quality.. Perhaps you need an extra effort to assure people that your stuffs have great quality..

Yes I thought of making a small change too. As for the quality, I am thinking of using good wood and accessories. That way the quality will be obvious. I have been a salesman for years, so I know how to promote them. Would you pay more for a handmade guitar clock?

Unemployment is rising. There are no jobs out there. What we can all do is use our skills/talents for something like this.

Good day Kostas499, Your idea is a brilliant one. Imagine that from scratch, you can create a particular type of instrument. That, you were able to give life to the tools that you are having. Considering that, if that tools were handed to those people who are not that creative, the tools will remain as it is. Thus, this makes you a distinct individual. Thru your creativity, a new form was being introduced. On the other side of the fence, perhaps, try to work for a few things first to sell and offer at the net. If you intend to copy a particular design, it will be better to make a few things as your initial inventory. Then from there, you can conclude if you will continue but be ready to pay the copyright since your design is a duplicate of the original one. But, if you are just doing a thing which is not exactly as the original, then, I dont think you need to pay copyrights. Especially if you did not really copy the design from the original. Nevertheless, just be aware and read on copyright guidelines so you know where to stand after your second inventories. Goodluck friend.

That I am not sure of. The best thing you could do is to contact a copyright lawyer, they should know if you would be wrong making them or not.

I think you wont be allowed copy designs because i think design created by someone or some company will come under intellectual property law and according to this law you wont be allowed to copy somone else's designs. You already answered your second question as no one can predict anything about your sales.

I think it's allowed to copy also because it won't be the same and you make something else out of it. If I would pay 30-35 euro's for it depends on how grat it looks like, the size and what kind of clock you build in. A picture would help. Also the question is: how much will be charge to send it I think I would be interested unless it looks great to my opinion.

They will be copies made at tha same size as all the guitars/basses. I want it to have a real feel with strings and all. Posting to Netherlands might be around 10-15 euros, depending on the weight.

There are many companies that make look-a-likes I have to believe that unless you try to pass them off as originals you should be ok. However I don't know all the laws on this matter. I don't know the conversion from euros to the Canadian or US dollar so I can't really comment on the price. But I can offer this to you, anyone into collecting items of this nature would be interested in your design.

I will clearly state that they are handmade copies. The conversion is 46 canadian. What do you think?
