My kids used to love chinese food. We would go to the local restaurant and get a sweet and sour chicken. The chicken pieces would be basted in a sauce with chunks of green pepper, pineapple and thinly sliced carrots. Nowadays go get an order of sweet and sour chicken it is basically chicken nuggets with a bowl of red sweet and sour sauce. What happened to the real sweet and sour chicken? I cannot find it anywhere in any chinese restaurant anymore. Sure miss that dish.

I'd think it's a combination of cutting costs and catering to the tastes of people in the area - like where I live, there's a lot of spicier things on the nearby Chinese restaurant's menu since the area has people who prefer spicier foods. Sometimes it takes some hunting to find some decent Chinese cuisine. It took me a while to find a place out here that had anything close to the sort of Chinese I grew up eating (lots of authentic food in my youth, courtesy of Chinese relatives), but they tend to be a bit more expensive since the food is closer to that authentic sort of thing.

You are right about one thing some of the dishes are being made more spicy. I ask for no spice and a couple of times they did it right. I went back and they spiced it up again They redid my order and darn if it did not have the spice in it again so I had to quit going to that restaurant. I sadly miss them as they are very kind. But I cant eat the spice in foods it will tear up my stomach!

May be the Chinese restaurant are now a days focusing more on those dishes which are getting more popularity among the people.Never to forget, people often change their tastes. They never stick to one food.I think this could be a reason why the old dishes are loosing customers. Also the restaurants might have changed their trendsetting by undergoing a variety of experiments with the old typical Chinese food and just coming up with some new flavors and versions or may be I guess a new avatar of the same old food to attract more customers.

I think you may be right you know kids even in commercials suggest they don't like vegetables thus ingredients can be left out to get even the kids eat it. Sad world we live in today. I still love my vegetables in my sweet and sour chicken. And I have never been able to reproduce that exact flavor even if I tried making it.

I have been known to tell restaurants when they change their menu whether I like it or not and whether I will continue to be a diner. However, due to my diet limitations, I have to ask at every Chinese restaurant if the noodles are rice or ?? I have found one near my home where I can get Low Mein with rice noodles. Unfortunately, I cannot eat sweet and sour chicken/pork or whatever if it has wheat products in it. Since I was put on this diet, I feel so much better, so I have to agree with the doctor's diagnosis of wheat intolerance. I'd make a suggestion at my favorite Chinese restaurant, that they return to the old recipe. Hope you can find it somewhere or convince them to do it. I have one place I can do special requests, and they do it. Thanks for the discussion.

We have a chinese restaurant that opened and they set up a area to make your own soup bowl. they had the rice noodles you are speaking of. I tried them and it was a nice texture and different from the regular wheat noodles. I am sure they will not make it as it is quite different for a chinese buffet. But It was a nice way to learn a real tradition instead of what Americans think chinese food is.

Hi marie: Unfortunately these things happen with companies in general. They just reduce their quality after they are well known. Is it possible that you find another Chinese restaurant with better quality. That's the reason why I love to proof different restaurants to always have new options on my way. ALVARO

We still have the sweet and sour chicken in our Chinese restaurants here. They are so good and the food is great. I know that other restaurants will actually serve chicken nuggets with sweet and sour sauce but they are a poor imitation to the sweet and sour chicken you get at the chinese restaurants.

I guess everyone has to cut back with prices to make somewhat of a type of version. Glad you can still get it made this way.

Yes thats too bad . Nowadays that dish is not as good as before. Now they put too much flour in the chicken nuggets , there is just a little bit of meat. I rather prepare it myself, its easy and I put a good amount of everything ummm its tastes good with white rice. have a good day.

hi marie oh yuck pink slime is in chicken nuggets too and i wo uld never eat them, shame that Chinese restaurants have slipped to this as that s tuff is the leavings of the cutting room floor with some chemicals put in it to kill any germs.I used to like sweet and sour chicken too but I have not had any for ages. I do know AI willnot eat chicken nuggets as they have that pink slime added to them. yuck.

Basically, if you want really good Chinese food, you usually either have to live in or near a large city, or you have to make your own. I've seen too many "Chinese" restaurants in different areas of the U.S. serving chicken nuggets and calling it sweet and sour chicken or even serving up things like pizza and french fries as a standard part of their menu.
