I hope kids learn a valuable lesson here

If you have been watching the news lately, there is a story of a high school student who was told that she couldn't attend her graduation rites from high school because of the picture she posted in her Facebook account. The said picture is that of the student in a bikini and since she is a minor (kids in our country graduate high school at 16) one of the disciplinary measures taken by the school is to not to allow her to attend the graduation. I feel no pity for the student, but I feel pity for the parents. I'm sure that the parents only learned of what she posted when they were told that their child couldn't attend her graduation ceremonies. I don't think any parent in their right mind would allow their child to post such a picture in the internet for everyone to see. And I feel sympathy towards the parents because they even supported their child and went to court just to ask the school to let their child attend the ceremony. I hope the children who have watched or heard the news learn from this incident. The internet is crawling with people who may take advantage of a innocent picture and sometimes it is too late for parents to repair the damage caused by posting such. I know that the student got a TRO that allowed her to attend, but on the day itself she wasn't allowed into the school grounds and thus never really got to attend her own graduation ceremony. I hope kids think first before they post anything on the internet. And I hope that parents in our country are able to monitor the internet accounts of their children.

Hello anne, I think it's very important for students to read the manual or student hand book. unfortunately, this all girl school was very strict indeed.yes, people on the net can spread it like a virus for some reason. they think it's alright until it causes them a lot of trouble. i hope it would server her as a lesson.

Hi LK! I think it's more of common sense really. You don't need to read a handbook just to know what's wrong or right in the pictures that you post online.

Wow. Maybe the kid feels that since she's already graduating, she can already get away with anything. The school still hold some power and she can still get suspended if she doesn't follow school rules and regulations. And some schools can really be very strict and protective of their students. I do feel bad for the parents. Maybe the parent could attend the ceremony and receive the diploma for her.

The last I heard about this news is that the parents and the girl were barred from entering the school premises on the day of the graduation even if they were able to get a TRO from court. Thanks for your response..

hi Anne! I havent really heard the news. So to clarify, the student was allowed to march right??? but the school did not allow them to march right??? so... what happens to the records of the students, are they still considered as graduates of the school but just didnt earn the honor of marching down the aisle??? I too pity the parents... Their reaction was all after the fact. You are right when you said that the parents should at least monitor the pictures posted by their kids on FB. ... and oh by the way.. even employers surf on FB for the aspiring employees... so, let us all be careful...

I'm not too sure with regard to the records and stuff, the news focused more on the fact that the girl wasn't allowed to attend the graduation ceremonies. People should really think twice before posting anything online because once you hit the upload button, it becomes public property no matter how many privacy settings you place on it. You think there's no loophole in the privacy of accounts in Facebook? I don't think so. It's just sad that this had to happen when it should have been a happy occasion for the parents and the child. All because the girl didn't think twice before she hit the upload button on her Facebook account.

Perhaps she thinks that she can do anything since she's done with school but she forgot that the school still hold the power to allowed and not to allowed her to attend her graduation. It's a good lesson for others and they could learn to be more wise and careful with anything including posting personal things via facebook.

I haven't seen th picture of this so called student. So I can't judge if the photo is really daring or she is just happy to show is curves and all or possible she is just preparing for the upcoming summer vacation.

The use of Facebook is so rampant nowadays.I think, people from all walks of life have Facebook. This news should really serve a lesson for children who slowly looses their values due to the influence of the modern world. They should learn how maintain their values and dignity and not be deceive by the influence of what's the latest trend. If they want to pose in a bikini suit and don't want to be the talk of the tow, they should learn how to keep their pictures in private. Most of all, for everyone who uses Facebook, this is my simple reminder-Don't post in Facebook what you don't want to do in a public place.I also pity for the parents who strive hard to send their children in a good school and to have a better education. being in a catholic school doesn't mean that a child will become a good child. Parents still play a great part. They shouldn't forget their to give time to their children,to advice them and give them disciplinary measures.

I think parents should be more cautious with what their kids post nowadays in their online accounts or try to monitor it. If they can't at least teach the kids on how to set the privacy options of their accounts so that limited people will have access to it. Thank you for your response.
