Carrying cash....

How many of you carry cash on a regular basis? I never do, and that's why I guess I'm starting this discussion... I went to the casino with my friend on Friday night - had a blast - I brought $100 to spend on gambling (I know, I'm a high roller!), and I was down to my last $30 when I hit... really good... I ended up winning $260 more than what I started with. So, I walked out of the casino with $360 cash in my wallet. That is insane in an awesome way of course. I normally use my check card (or a credit card if I need to) everywhere I go. I don't like carrying cash. I find card more convenient and I can budget a little better when I have a paper trail/everything recorded online. I spent about $40 of my cash this weekend and put the rest in the bank. I felt really uncomfortable knowing I had so much cash in my pocket. I know credit cards can get stolen too (and often do), but for some reason cash seems to be a lot more dangerous. And dangerous in terms of my spending (green money tends to burn a hole in my pocket!). My boss doesn't have a checking account or any kind of account or credit card, so she is always spending cash. It's totally backwards of what I do! Anyway, how many of you carry cash on a regular basis? If so, on any given day, how much cash are you carrying? Do you ever feel uncomfortable carrying cash?

Tap my wallet and call me Kermit! I'm olde school: "There's no color as pretty as the color of money." Money is like a book (a real one), you can touch it, smell it, and enjoy just holding it in your hand....ahhh! I'm not bothered if I do not have much of it, but there is no absolute substitute for it. I'll take money over plastic any day.

Hahaha! Indeed! I too would take money over plastic any day. Not to mention the schemes they do with those cards to make you pay more than what you owe them, whew! Only the foolish use credit cards for everything! Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Dear friend, I mostly cash a bit of cash as the cards are not accepted here in Kochi in India. Moreover for I feel comfortable with cash. As there were times when I used to use my debit and credit card for many purcashes ending in speedy decrease in my bank account. Moreover if there is cards I do find it hard for my self limit my wants. But now days I hardly use card, I do use my cash.

I am uncomfortable carrying cash either. But I burn money easier with credit cards, which is why I steer clear of them most of the times. I just take out the amount of cash needed for the week (or the day) and then just live on it. Though indeed, knowing how much money you've got in the bank and how much you could get from your credit card surely makes budgeting a difficult (almost impossible) task to be done, but heck if I let myself go, I'd go bankrupt by the years' end! I know greens could be taken or burned quicker, but I think credit card would only lead to trouble anyways. I think it's much safer if you'd bring necessary cash (but it also depends on how much you need though). Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Like you, I don't normally carry cash with me. I have a wallet, but that's just for my cash. Sometimes my kids would ask me how much money I got, and I could honestly say I don't have any! But about two years ago (maybe more), when I started drinking coffee, I've learned to carry a few coins in my wallet. It's good for getting coffee in the morning.

Oops! Typo... I have a wallet, but that's just for my cards (debit and credit).

I have responded to a similar discussion a while ago. (Did you ever use discussions' link before you start a thread?) With the convenience of debit card that you can use anywhere in most public places, more and more people in developed countries like US are starting to carry less cash in their pockets. Nowadays, you can go to any gas station and slide it your Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or any charge chard. You don't have to worry about losing any cash. I almost carry about $20 in my wallet or more or less. It depends on where I go, but lots of time I keep it in budget. It doesn't mean that I would spend that $20 everyday. Based on your profile, you could be in college. I could be wrong, so no offense. If you take a public transportation (bus), you probably have the convenience of student ID to let you ride for free. Or if you aren't, you go anywhere in a car. Sometimes, you would never thought that a convenience store you go to has a malfunction credit/debit card machine (or it just happens to be out of order). In this case, you probably have to take the hassle of going to an ATM to retrieve some cash OR you go a different store. Of course, this does not happen every day. You would not be much of a help when someone asks if you have a small change. You would plainly say no since you don't carry cash. You would also not be able to spare some changes for anyone in need, not that you need to be nice enough to give away money. I would set aside a small amount of cash in case you need it for any reasons. You decide how much based on how you live.

I almost always use cash because of the interest rates on credit cards. Of course, sometimes if I know I'm going to buy a lot of things I'll take a credit card or use a check because lugging around that much cash is a pretty big hassle. Also, it's good for your credit score if you charge things and then pay them off, so sometimes I'll do that. But yeah, I usually carry cash.

The only time I will carry cash is if someone gives it to me, or if I have to have it for a cab. I much prefer to use the debit card like you, it's safer. You can see what is going on with your money and if you lose a debit or credit card you just call them up and say it's been lost. They'll deactivate / cancel the other and send you out a new one.

I see to it that i carry cash everyday, at least five hundred pesos and some coins. I need it for my transportation and my meals when in the office. I also carry with me my debit card, just in case i need bigger amount. My credit cards, i usually leave it at home unless i need it if my debit card ran out of funds already or it is time for me to pay. I feel uncomfortable if i don't have cash with me because there are times that ATM machines are not available and i don't want to use my credit card always. Though the risk of robbery and thievery is there but i am just careful, you know, here in my place, bad people abounds.

I do in fact carry cash but obviously I don't carry much more than I think I need. Perhaps a little bit extra, but I tend to plan out what I am going to do before I step right out of the door. That is a rather unfortunate trap, where people walk out of the door with far more cash than they need to and really it is going to be something that is going to cause them to blow through money. Me, I tend to live the life as comfortable but I'm more comfortable when I am not absolutely strapped on the cash that I do need to spend. So I find myself taking just perhaps all I think I need, plus about ten percent of what I need. That way I have extra but I don't have so much extra that I'm not too creative for my own good. Cash and cash only and only what I need. And I rarely have the luxury for more.

Hi maezee! I don't have credit cards just a debit card but I don't use it that much as I like to carry cash more than cards. I feel the opposite as for me I can do my budget better with cash than card. I can't see the money if I am using card and that will make me use it more and more. I will just bring the cash not more than I needed. I always feel comfortable carrying cash as I just bring the amount needed not more than that~(^^)

Yeah, it's better to use credit cards, and bear only the necessary cash.

I always carry a little cash for emergencies and a couple debit cards for purchases. I keep them in my wallet in my purse and I write everything down as best I can. I use my debit as a credit sometimes but I've never had a credit card because of the fees. It works for me to have both.

I prefer to carry cash with me most of the time. I want to spend cash rather than on credit card. I don't have the discipline to follow through when I use my credit card so I want to do it in cash. If I don't have cash, at least I will not be spending anything that I don't have. I feel comfortable carrying cash since I don't go to places that I don't like spending my cash on. It's a personal choice for any one. That works better for you may not work for me so we can understand one another here.

I don't think I ever have more than $100 cash on me -and usually less than like $50 I'm thinking. I like to have some cash in case I want a coffee or some small item. Other than that, I have my debit card on me at all times, but lately I've been trying not to use it since I'm more likely to spend too much money when I'm just slapping down some plastic than when I'm reaching for cash. Some people are the opposite and spend more when they have cash than cards, but not me. I also always have my credit card on me, but I only use that for "emergencies" and when it's something that my parents agree to paying for, since the card technically goes to their account. I used to carry a lot more cash when I was waitressing -on my way home at like midnight, I'd have at least $150-200 of cash in my pocket, and would basically RUN across the parking lot to my car, thinking I was going to get mugged at any second, haha.

Wow sounds like you had a great time at the casino, With me if I carry cash it is not much I guess because I watch way too many crime television shows and just want to stay on the safe side. So I carry less than 10 dollars in my purse.

First, congrats on winning. There are dangers to carrying cash and using your credit/debit card. For me, I do not like carrying cash because that is so easily spent and easily stolen. Using your debit card, you know what you have. For me, I found the right prepaid debit card. There are no fees and you cannot spend money you do not have.

I am no longer comfortable carrying big amount of cash. I normally bring and use my atm card aka debit card during shopping. I have also started to discipline myself in using credit cards. I do not normally bring it when going to the shopping malls in that way I will not be lured to swipe it immediately if I see something that I like. I only use it on major purchases, usually, on 0% installments. Normally, I only bring with me small amount of cash and my debit card. It is safer that way. (,")

I always carry cash with me,because I live in a small town where most shops do not accept credit card.I don't have a credit card either.Earlier I used to carry money in a purse, but later on it became inconvenient for me.So now I keep money in my pocket. But I keep it feeling in my pocket to ensure that it is intact there. However I never keep excess money with me lest I might be pick pocketed.
