Friends, what are your reasons for buying a book apart from academics? Do you base your choice on the best reviews? Or do you buy it to satisfy your curiousity?

I buy books pretty often just cause I'm a big reader. I don't really base my decisions on recommendations or reviews, I just browse until I find something that I think I might like! I'm actually rarely disappointed, and when I am then it doesn't really bother me much. I just sell the book to a used book store and go find a new book to read. I haven't been bookshopping in awhile because I overdid it last year (bookshopping is kind of my therapy shopping! I don't enjoy shopping for clothes near as much as I enjoy shopping for books) and ended up with more books than I could read in a short amount a time. I'm also trying to save money, so I'll be going to the library when the books on my to-read shelf are finally all read.

hi grace! i like to be surprised so i tend to pick out random titles. buying books out of curiosity is really a hit and miss thing for me but being the avid reader that i am i still go out and buy books out of curiosity as i wouldn't mind reading about a variety of topics. as for books of specific authors, i read books by mario puzo (of the 'godfather' fame) and clive cussler(of the oregon files, numa files, and dirk pitt novels). sometimes if i come across a really great review for a book, i try to look for that book and see if i can download it for free before actually buying one. i don't really look at best sellers list before deciding on what new book to purchase and read. cheers and happy mylotting!!!

i was at a local bookstore and saw the 'don't sweat the small stuff' series compiled in one book. as far as i know, they have three books in the series, the original one, 'don't sweat the small stuff', one for work, 'don't sweat the small stuff at work', and one for money matters, 'don't sweat the small stuff financial' (not sure if that is even the title! lol!). anyway, i had all three books before but had given it to a friend. now, i'm looking for a download version of all three. also surprised to see a fourth one, 'don't sweat the small stuff about family matters'. might be worth getting a copy of that book as well. i also saw a book titled 'the jedi path'. it is part of the star wars series. will look it up as well online and see what's it about and if its worth reading. cheers!!!

Hello, for me it really depends. I usually buy all my books on Amazon.com. I will say for about a good 10 years I wasn't the reading type of person. But my sister had a book that she said I should read and its called One Child by Torey Hayden. So I decided to read it and as soon as I was done reading it, I just got the urge to see if she wrote more. She writes based on her life experiences of helping children. Shes a great writer who is I am assuming a teacher as most of her stories is based on her teaching background of helping these students open up or even to learn how to self love to be able to love others. Well I did buy 2 more of her other books, so there for I only need about another 8 or so of her books. So on Torey Hayden my choice was because I liked her style of writing and that she based it on the true experiences of her life in teaching, helping and loving these students. Other books are based upon reviews if its a true story. I'm into the true stories as they are more eye catching and get me into reading. Another set of books I like reading is the teen books like Goosebumps,boyfriend/girlfriend and others like those. Some look at me like I'm a nut because I am going on 28 but I really enjoy teen books too!

I tend to buy books based on my interest and impression of them from the cover/blurb when I find them. I'm more of a fiction person but I tend to prefer science books when I venture into non-fiction. Most of the books I've bought for university have never actually been read (some haven't even been opened since I got them). Birdie -

This kind of seems strange to me as I have not bought a book in a long time although I do love to read and reading is one of my favourite pastimes. I generally read the books I have over and over as a lot of them are my favourite books. I generally read fiction and I tend to go for the likes of Stephen King as well as Dean Koontz or Clive Barker, they are great authors and write really well. I think it's nice to read reviews from time to time on what others think about a particular book as this definitely builds up curiosity. I suppose I should buy another book as I am so used to the ones I already have and perhaps it's time I tried something new. Andrew

I usually buy books from the thrift store, anything that looks interesting. I only end up paying like 50 cents per book, so it's really not a bad investment even if I don't like the book (in which case I will just donate it somewhere, so at least it's going for a good cause). But I usually keep an eye out for authors I like or have heard are good, or best sellers that I have been meaning to read.

Hi Gracee, some of the reasons for buying a book include to give as present to someone else. It may not be a paperback book, since some people prefer the audio book. They can listen to the motivational speech when they are stuck in the traffic jam. It is also good for those who have eyesight problem. I think personally, the only reason for buying a book is to read it over and over again, and we can make notes in the book.

I love delving in history and historical fiction with facts woven in. I will usually read the backside of the book to see if it might hold my interest. If so, I usually pick up 3 or 4 books and then make a decision on one or two. Its so hard to just buy one or two. I love reading. And I still love to hold a book in my hands. I have been reading a lot on Government and some of the new books out. Some are deep and harder to understand but I just want to be informed to make a good decision in what I do.

depends on the book, if pocketbook I buy based on the summary of the story on the back. but sometimes I also buy based on reviews, if they said that book is a must read then I'll also buy one, and most of the time reviews are right.

Dear friend graceekwenx, Definitely there are many reasons when people buy the books. When I buy a book, there must be a reason or curiosity. I like to have or buy books to learn much more about the world or science. I buy books when I feel alone or to time pass to get much more about world.
