Sen. Enrile's Broken Promise

It suddenly came to my poor mind everytime I am able to watch a local news on TV saying that there'll be an upcoming electric bill increase because of a purported increase in the Power Generation Cost, which comprises I think around half of our electric bills, much worse there is a Royalty Tax tailing it which also comprises almost half of what will be our electric bill. If you could only remember one of his earlier campaign commercial on TV (not the "Gusto Ko Happy Ka" thing) around early parts of 2009 which discusses the flow of our electric bills. The commercial showed that when we acquire imported coal and/or imported oil, the tax is surprisingly much lower and if we acquire the local natural gas the tax is an astonishing almost two times than that of the tax being charged on the imported energies, which apparently is contrary to what we are expecting. Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile then concluded at the latter half of the commercial that it should not be the case, because it's not imported and for this reason the Royalty Tax being charged on this he said further, should be lowered and hence, so is our electric bills. "Sa Tulong ng Kongreso at Gobyerno, Magagawa Ko ito para sa inyo". This is what he had said at the tail end of the commercial. But what are we experiencing today? the past year? Has the Royalty Tax in reality even decreased a little? or Did he ever took action on this since elected as 5th by the people of the Philippines? did he even remember what he had promised to do up to this time especially where the electric bills is an ever-burgeoning problem of our country?. Moreover, some of the provinces of Mindanao today is even experiencing power shortages. tsk.tsk.tsk. I am not taking all the blame to him but my only concern was the promise he had made. And I understand that we're still procuring these imported energy sources up to this very day that's why our electric bills still remains to be that high because of some still-expensive, ever-UNchanging power charges BUT have he ever really took action on that promise? Promises are indeed made to be broken..

Politicians are normally not geared towards telling the truth; there words are usually aimed at earning the popularity vote with their people. Contrary to popular opinion, politics is not about representation of the peoples needs but it is all about the power that one will yield from being made leader. So before you take politician’s words seriously, do a real economic assessment on the issue.

Reality bites, as an old adage says. How sweet are the promises when a thing is being sought for, endless reassurance, false promises, and the like that can sway the hearts of ordinary people. Good politicians are those who live up to their promises even when they are elected.
