Tsunami, earthquake

My home is far from sea, the nearest beach is 375 kilometers away; I have never experienced tsunami. Earthquake is also very rare here. After the recent red-alert given by our government, I was expecting earthquake, I had experienced the last in 1984 and prior to that in 1956 only, they were very mild; but while I was in Davao and Cebu of Philippines in 2004; I had experienced earthquakes, I was scared; but people there took it very lightly. So what about your place, have you witnessed earthquakes, tsunami, tornados? Do you get scared like me? Please share your opinion and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 14/04/2012

I recall a earthquake here when I was eight years old. We had just gotten home and I was asleep in the back seat. Then I recall another one in the early 1980's. It was a more severe one because I was in my apartment and lamps were swaying and the floor was rocking. I have never lived close to the ocean.

Hi Bhuwan, As you might know, my country has what I call the Gold Medal for earthquakes. We had the biggest earthquake ever recorded in my lifetime and the last big one is also one of the biggest recorded. I´m afraid of earthquakes and that´s why I have my bedroom in the first floor. But my house is entirely safe, even for the worst earthquake, like the oone in Valdivia, Chile, in 1960. I would be more afraid of tsunamis, but I don´t live near the sea. We also have volcanos in the Andes mountains. The latest volcanoes that misbehaved were the Puyehue and the Chaitén. You can see the mess they left at the web in youtube. I think that as earthquakes go, it is difficult to think of a very big earthquake in countries that only have small ones. But it is also true that if houses do not meet the requirements for an earthquake, there will be a lot more damage, specially in human lives. Thus, even if the Haiti earthquake was a lot more small than our 2007 earthquake, more lives were lost. Our loses were material; theirs were mainly people

Dear friend, I don´t know how my health is. I live one day at a time and do what doctors say. But I´m afraid that I don´t have a complete faith in doctors so I only hope that my life will continue to have a good quality. Lenth does not mean so much for me, I think. As for houses, here in my country most houses are built by special standars that help them to stay put in spite of the earthquakes. Mine is specially well built as it was built by my husband who´s job was to build houses and the like. Now, after these last earthquakes, I only have to get a person to change some roof tiles that broke then. We had another big one a couple of days ago, 6.5 in Richter scale. We have had 3 big ones this last month. I don´t like it at all. In my country, in Spanish, we have 2 words for earthquakes depending on how big it is.

Yes of course they are scary as you experienced here in my country. We really know what happened next when it comes we can't control nature and we can't predict when will it come. So far the very scary earthquake I experienced was last June 16, 1990 with 7 or 8 intensity. And also the eruption of the Mt. Pinatubo next year after the earthquake.

I do not stay near the sea so i cannot tell you about a tsunami, but i have experienced an earthquake once in my house. When the house was shaking i just ran down the building and stood in the center of the ground. I could hear things shaking in my neighbors house. The neighbors grandmom and grandson were coming down very slowly. There is a bridge behind my house and whenever trucks pass by, there is mild shaking in my ground. But we just ignore it because it happens most of the time. Once there was a mild earthquake which was reported in the paper but we did not find the difference.

It is always good to run to open ground well the vibration in bridge is due to trucks.. Professor

We did not used to have earthquakes here in the center of the United States. But finally last year we had the strongest one ever - it was still only at a 5.6 but caused a little bit of damage. It was my first time to experience an earthquake. It was certainly different. I am used to toronadoes...but not earthquakes! lol!

Well, here we have had both - but tornadoes in this region are definitely much more destructive than earthquakes here.

I live in Kentucky the United States..not much here as far as somethings. one occasions of bad weather as an ice storm and one lots of rain. had a few really bad storms here and there . some hurt , this year is the year of storms and bad weather. I believe because of the sun and moons and planets changeing. It is sad when one is caught in this and hurts another . yes it gets scary sometimes . tornados are alot now going on in differant places. I try not to be scared and focus on what to do ahead of time. ..

In California, we have had many earthquakes, but the majority of them have been minor earthquakes. There was one that did destroy or ruined a city in California once, and most people, those who were left, fled the city after what had happened. I have been in a few big ones, and those left me shaken for quite a while. Most people in California appeared as though they always need to hold on to something. You never feel right after an earthquake.

I have experienced earthquakes and tornadoes. The part of the USA I live in doesn't normally have earthquakes and when we do it is a simple and minor shudder that lasts only a few moments. The tornadoes can be very fierce and very dangerous however and should be taken seriously. I get frightened when I hear of tornado chances and usually prepare myself to go hide away in the safe areas of the home.

I have several times experienced an earthquake. But, I have never, and do not want to experience the tsunami. I can not imagine, if there is a tsunami in my residence. It was horrible, imagine stunami. In my country, ever happened stunami, and the victims so much. A few days ago, an earthquake, and the potential of the tsunami warnings. I continued to pray, so that the tsunami did not happen. Traumatized by the tsunami a few years ago, still can not be lost. I am very relieved, because the tsunami did not occur, and the tsunami warning was lifted.

You are lucky professor that you are 375 kilometers away from the nearest beach. Its not a good experience to have and no one would want such an experience. Such traumas dont go that easily and will haunt us all the rest of our lives. I never had any experience of any natural calamities yet and God forbid never. Anyway i am told Mysore is situated in a safe geographical location hehe

Earthquake... Man i would be so scared. Very recently was just this year and i was so scared when it was happening... I was in the office and everyone went all a-hushing trying to keep their cool while everything else was shaking. I even saw my boss grabbing her rosary on a saint's picture. All i thought then was oh god, please dont let this happen... I dont think im ready to die yet.

It is terrible and sad when natural disasters like these are happening. Thank God that I have never experienced any of these in my life. I can't imagine being around areas affected by the tsunami at the end of 2004. I would not how it feels like to experience an earthquake like the one in Japan two years ago.

I live in the Philippines where natural calamities are part of our normal life. Every year, we experience several quakes. The Philippines is along the area of the Pacific ring of fire that makes it prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Sometimes, I can feel the quakes but most of the time, I hardly even notice. But no matter how often or used we are to earthquakes, I still find it scary and life-threatening.

When I was 7 years old, I witnessed a twister (a tornado which originated from a body of water). It was quite scary back then. The nuns at our school gathered us inside the auditorium to keep us safe. But my brother who was in high school back then saw the twin twisters from a distance. They are at the 3rd floor of our school building. Even though it was quite from the school, they turned the field of our school into a swamp and was able to move the basketball courts. When I was 12 years old, I experienced an earthquake and at the same school. Everybody docked and stayed below their tables while I ran outside to see our gymnasium swaying. hehehe...
