Hi Friends and dear Lotters Strangely, I find myself breaking my own Rules when it comes to Food and Now it is Music too Here is why I use this CRY emoticon for Music - A few days, I was forced to listen (yes, forced because it was at my friends wedding anniversary where they were playing this one) to this song - Wish You Were Here I Wish You Were Here Don't you know, the snow is getting colder And I miss you like hell And I'm feeling blue And I dont know what touched me so much about this song that I not only got it downloaded on my computer and have already been playing it almost all time I am at the computer... And the worst part - Everytime, I am listening to this... there is some profound feeling of sadness that has started to creep in... And yet... I cant lay my hands off this song... I had decided a few years back that I will not listen to such sad emotional songs as they do pain me more that ease me or lighten me up but this time I broke my own rules and I think I am paying some price for breaking My Own rules What is your experience with the rules that you set for yourself and... umm do you break them and if you do... how do you cope up! have a great weekend fellas... theSids ps.: If you are sentimental - please avoid listening to sad songs...they only will make you more sad and more gloomy : Observation #1265 of theSids

Hi brother Okay first tell me - Bro? Brother? or B'rather? Which one do you prefer? (This is not a poll question though - need to mention this too as of the guidelines you see...) Right, so you are supposed to diet... I have a better idea to implement the rules... how about a little twist in that rule - I will be dieting in between times when I am not eating.... Think about this one... and if you find it helpful... next time frame this rule...... hehehhe (sorry I already used up the Quota of allowed 3)

sids, Whatever made you stopped listening to songs is your choice. I listen to sad songs when I am sad, to help me cry- funny but yes, I need sad song to make me cry. It's been a long time since I last cry and even with sad events- I can't make tears. And I missed crying- I need to cry out loud (I missed it huwahhhhhh ) Breaking my own rule/s? I only know one rule that I usually break- EATING!!!

I know the song that you are listening to. When my ex-boyfriend went to Indonesia I listed to that song all the time. Indonesia is very far from my country and I missed him a lot and wished that he was in Denmark with me. I had just moved into another house and most of my things were still in boxes. The only thing I had in my room was a mattress on the floor, my stereo and a cd with that song... I often break the rules that I make about eating. I love sweet things, and I don't know how many times I have decided to change my eating habits. I eat healthy food a while and then I break my own rules, because I just can't stay away from the sweet things My husband and my friends laugh at me and tease me when I tell them that I going to quit sweet things, because they know many times I have broken my own rules. Some days ago I decided to quit sweets...again and THIS TIME I am going to stick to my own rules (I say that every time )

Hi Porscopino Finally, I have found someone who is aware of this song. and I can relate to it now even better. My wife is away too and in a city - unfortunately there is no way that I can be with her until July 1st week and this is what makes this song more saddening to me. As for the food... hehehe.... I have been asked so many times Not to eat this or that (due to my health and ulcerative colitis) and somehow I have managed o break most of the rules forced upon me by the doctors via my loving wife. Not only in her presence but also in her absence, there have been days when I go about having almost anything that I want - and each time this upsets my health... I say I will not eat this again

Hi , Porcospino , and thesids , I have a song that makes me sad when I listen to it. This song is called "Black" by Pearl Jam. After my ex-girlfriend wanted us to be only friends and not romantic ... I felt I lost her in a way. I was so sad and especially when I hear that song. Now she has someone else and although I'm happy for her , I am also sad , that song sure touches a week spot of mine. Then , I become depressed , I don't study , I am about to fail a test tommorow , I also run away to mylot instead of studying...So I also don't follow my own rules. I decided to learn at least 10 minuts every hour and it is too hard for me. arg!!!

But I love miserab songs, They felt so good listening too specially if I felt like hanging my neck in a rope or slashing my wrist with a box cutter, I thought I am over about being emo.... You know when you are miserable, it feels grate to lock your self in a room so no one can see, Play a miserable emotional song. Then sing at the top of your lungs until your throat hurt, while jumping in your bed like its a stage and you are doing a concert.... Did I just revealed what i do when I am alone

Hiya Captain If only I could sing out at that "Then sing at the top of your lungs until your throat hurt" I tried that a couple of times earlier to vent off too but it made me more uneasy... and I know I was not born to be a singer... Slashing wrists with a box cutter... Sounds scary though... I did that too long back and have grown to Not to do it again...

Hi sids I do listen to sad songs as well once in a while cause they help get tears out of my eyes. You might think that it's silly but sometimes we do need to let it all out. Sometimes when I miss my Dad, I would listen to the songs that he used to listen and then I will think of him and then I cry myself out. After that, it makes me feel better. Don't worry about breaking the rules, dear. It is said that sad tears do help in cleansing out any toxins that is in us rather than happy tears. So, cry whenever you can or whenever you feel like it.

hi Jlyn Remembering someone in your thoughts along with listening to songs is a really killer idea. I used to do that quite often after my grandfather passed away. I still have those tapes... but no player today And for the tears... Hmmm... I think tears shed while slicing and cutting onions are still much better and relieving as the sad songs do upset the mind and bring in deeper sadness which hangs over for many longer times...

i like listening to sad songs, but you are not the first person i have ever come across who doesn't. its probably about the emotions you don't want to wake up, but it is healthier really to express sadness rather than to bury it. on the subject of rules i have a few very old rules that i didn't even know i had ever made, and some of them are not very good rules, and breaking free from them was a good thing for me. but on the whole i try to be careful about setting rules for myself now, if i were you thesids i would thinking about setting rules that aren't too rigid, and perhaps ones about not being mean to yourself. i know there is phrase in the bible about treating other people as we would treat ourselves, but sometimes we treat ourselves worse than we do other people, so my rule now on rules is don't set rules for yourself that you would not dream of imposing on other people.

Oh dear... I wish I could do any of that - singing or playing... but due to my health conditions, I cannot go out to a tutor and the private tutors are quite expensive specially when it comes to music... going by the fact that I am confined at home and do not have too much of income (or better, a regular income). I tired the guitar learning via you tube but then, I somewhere do feel lost amidst so many of choices to start with. And I do know, my voice just sucks when I try singing... hmmm a bathroom singer that I am... with only the walls of that room as my audience
14 Apr 12
well that sounds good, rules that create order, can be useful if we feel like there isn't enough in our lives. actually, i used to like sad songs, but now i play them myself, on my guitar and sing folk songs, and i used to be absolutely terrified even thinking of performing in front of anyone, but now i do it. and i don't need to listen to them any more to fulfill an emotional need,i just listen now for the quality of the song, but when i perform people say i put a lot of emotion into my songs. maybe that's an option you could explore, to play or sing yourself, if you particularly like music, though i had to go through a massive process of overcoming fear to perform in front of anyone.

everyone can sing, though admittedly some sing better than others, though if you feel a bit stressed it can affect your voice. and with the guitar, all you need is a few chords. a very simple song book, with easy guitar chords is all you need. i often, especially in the past, have got overwhelmed by the number of choices, and i was lucky that i found a class where the teacher just said playing the guitar was easy, which was what i needed, as experts do love to tell us how complicated what they know is. but in any case bedroom, bathroom walls, and any walls all like a bit of music to listen to, and the experimental learner is their favourite.

Sorrow... - ...Can come from listening to sad songs...
Hi thesids, I'm sentimental, and songs with beautiful melodies and menlancholy words will make me weep and the drop of a hat. I'm not always in the mood for a real good cry, so will avoid songs I know will cause me to weep. At other times, perhaps if I'm feeling especially sad about something, I'll have a good wallow. Any song with the title "Wish You Were Here" in the lyrics has the potential to be very sad; such as the famous Pink Floyd song, which always strikes me as being about how people drift apart emotionally, where once they were close. Or become detached from the world, or others. As a song, it seems to encourage multiple interpretations. It may also be more personal; while the "Wish You Were Here" that was originally recorded by Swedish band Rednex, is certainly about one person in particular.

Hi thesids, thank you for your kind words, I like the Pink Floyd song very much I have to say, but the Rednex song "Wish You Were Here" has its good points too. You are right, sometimes it's best not to let music make you too sad.

Hi CarlHalling I cannot add anymore to such a wonderful response which has put the right words for all my feelings on this song right now I have listened to the Pink Floyd version too but that failed to touch me so deeply as this one. And trust me, I spent about an hour or a little more to get this song on you tube. There were so many from Pink Floyd or even others. I had stopped myself from listening to sad songs just because I felt that crying and feeling sad is not always healthy.

Hi Bhai! The first thing my friend told me when my heart got broken is to Not listen to Any love songs. I didn't restart listening to sad love songs until I was with my new guy. As a child I loved to sing sad songs , even when I was happy! You Have to stay away from the sad songs until you and Bahu are living together again! Promise me, if you ever feel lonely , write me! this is what I'm here for! As your older sister I am suppose to babysit! It would hurt me deeply if you were depressed and you didn't tell me! As for rules, I stopped making new Years Resolutions years ago. What I will do and what I won't do is written across my heart. And nowadays it is changeable. So please do not beat yourself about the sad songs.

No worries, I hope I will be going to her place today and we can have some good week and when I return, I would have overcome the sadness this song brought to me

Hi se7enthbird Well, I cannot add anything here as you are in a band and here it is your profession - I have always believed in - "The Show must Go On" and so I will always say Hats Off to people who are artistes and more specifically into professions where they do have to do things whether they enjoy or suffer... So Cheers to you dear for being in one such profession Okay, now that you are into this profession... maybe you are the right person to ask for a remedy. The history (if you dont find it boring) is - I am ill and stay at home. My wife is away on her jobin a different city and at the moment I cannot join her. I love listening to songs and in 2008 (when I was bed-ridden) I realized - these sad songs make me more sick and gloomy. Ever since, I did ensure NOT to listen any sad songs and even removed a whole GB of such songs from my PC, cell phone etc. I tried removing this one too but could not and even cannot help listening to this song(link is on Jaiho's box on my response to her).

You are not alone..i am very sentimental and some songs just do a number on me and i can tear up in seconds..Last night i was listening to Robin Gibb who is from the Beegees..He is in a coma right now and love the Beegees so not only am i sad for him, but these were songs from my high school days so they had special memories too! I am more proud of a person who can let out their feelings then someone who holds back.. Also very sorry to see a comment here from someone calling you names.. Glad you reported that person..

hi Rosekitty Thanks dear for being supportive (wrt the reported comment). I dont feel bad about those kind of things personally though I do feel bad that some people are that way - and put anything anywhere... I can see you being quite sentimental when you do mention about your feeling sad of Robin Gibb. BeeGees were my favorite bands when I was an ardent listener of English songs (during late 1980s and early 1990s). I wish him a better health.

Hi ifa Well, you have a great thought here - What is wrong with feeling sad and gloomy. Nothing much. But then, if this sadness occupies you for a longer time, or even when you are ill and all alone... it complicates the things. Specially for an emotional and sensitive person (obvoisly like me) There are still so many of those horrible memories which make me sick and ill and I just added one more onto that - I think this is something wrong on my part... and I should have stayed away from such things.

There are beats and lyrics of songs that have a grat influence on how you feel. I would recommend you to get a "happy" song and listen to it for a while so that your mood changes. I tend to feel down with gray days. I have a wonderful song that takes me out of the gloomy mood. I listen to it, sing with it and there I am It´s not that you should not listed to a sad song. Dear marguicha I normally listen to peppy numbers or even the ones which I cannot understand or make sense of anything (this comes from the fact that I am from a non-english background and so there are many songs in english where I only like the rythms or even the music, with a zero understanding of the words at times) Like you, dear, I too have a collection of songs (some of them available for listening on my profile page) and they dont play on my mind for a long time. Maybe this particular one, as it came after so many years of staying away from sad songs, has remained for a while - I think reading the responses here has helped me to find ways of overcoming this

I think it was Shelly who said our sweetest songs are those that have sadest thoughts. :) Ironically, most of the old numbers I like are sad and slow. This morning I was listening to a song from one of the movies of my ma's era, and somehow the wording just fit exactly with my ma's life, so I couldnt stop me dropping a few tears. I dont feel as sorry for me as I do for her sids. I mean she lived in an era there were few job opportunities, she was not educated enough, her properties were taken away by her maternal aunt, and she was harrassed no end by her maternal aunt's children, series of problems which I would rather not recall. I have done my penance..sort of. For a long time I hated her for leaving me alone in the world. Then, when I learnt more about her life, and how relatives manipulated her life and my pa's life only for their monetary gains, I could only feel sorry for her. I understood that even the five years and a half years that she survived and put up with a lot of pain was because of me and because she loved me. So five and a half years of mourning was due to her. I am just out of that now. I hope someday I will become dispassionate about it, and if there is a god, and he asks me to be the nemesis, I will be able to do whatever it is as honestly as I can and without falling pray to despair that I couldnt do anything about it.

Dear Vandana I have some idea about you, your relationship with mom and so I relate to this - My grandfather too - only if he had listened to my advice and had taken to the doctors,I am sure he would have survived... but then, we are all too small and nearly non-existent when it comes to what Lord decides. And worst, the ones who remain back after this sad departures, ahev to live with the pain and feeling that they are responsible for this departure... Wish we had some worst of the memories which always got wiped out sooner... I am glad that you have at least come out of that gloomy and sad feeling, for me, I am still not sure how long I have to be with those... somewhere, I dont want to get out of it as it always keeps me reminded of the fact - I have to be more emphatic at times. Anyways, This particular song... Today, things are a little better as I hope that tis evening I will go to my wife for a few days and am sure this staying away is one important reason for this song to have a greater effect on me.

So, you were unnecessarily made sad by that sentimental & melancholic songs, sids. But at least, now you know not to ever listen to them anymore, because that's what i resolve to myself too, many years ago. Actually, i don't listen to sad songs anymore. Even for those gospel songs , i want them to be of happy note, because i don't want that my mood will be altered in a sad way by any song.

Hi SimplyD Songs are said to make the day and set up the mood. When I realized that - I did say good bye to the sad versions that I had. But still some songs just tend to catch the attention and some draw me in... this one was one of such songs. And yes, today, I have overcome the feeling of sadness from this song and now it is more hummable and enjoyable

I know that music does set my mood. I think about how I want to feel, and so do not listen to the sad songs that make me feel badly. I do sometimes break my own rules about listening to sad or sentimental music, but that would be because I really want to feel sad and sentimental myself for sometime. I know, however, that I can stop it and change it by changing my music and my surroundings.

Hi Sid I loved those two and on the first page, I also found my favorite - Lobo song - Which is on my list of all time favorites a truely lovely song. Personally though, We emotional people should stay away from sad songs as many a times these tend to open up the wounds which we normally dont get healed but we keep supressing them as we know if they would be open and visible, we become more vulnerable and even dont get to enjoy what we can. I hope this song gets away soon and I get to feel better

Oh thesids..I have heard songs before that depressed me so but at the same time, I could not stop wanting to hear them...strange feeling really. I actually do avoid listening to sad songs though for the most part..as a "rule"They do often make me feel down when I hear them. I have a rule that I never date anyone that I work with and several years ago..well...I broke the rule and went out with someone anyway. I was right to have had the rule..LOL. After that, I just promised myself I would never break the rule again.

To "allow" myself to break my own rules what I really do. Listening to "sentimental" or "love songs" have a tendency to help heal a broken heart. I'm a lover of music of most genres; even international traditional music. On other occasions, these slower songs can actually keep you from moving on and depression can be devastating. It all depends on what it is you want the song to accomplish for you, and in what state of mind you are in.

Hello thesids, I am a huge fan of Jagjit Singh's ghazals. I don't know what happens to me when I listen to his sad ghazals. Even though if I would be in a happy mood I would start feeling depressed and would find tears rolling down my eyes. There is some strong connection between music and our mood swings, be it sad songs or peppy music. Well, I have never set any rule to not to listen to sad songs because sometimes it feels good to go through some emotional pain. Yes I do set up rules for myself and I do break them. Then being kindhearted I forgive myself and modify them as per my convenience. And again the same thing happens.

hi Inderjeetkaur I love late Jagjit Singh jee a lot and owe my interests to songs to His voice and Ghazals. There are numerous gems from him but the one special song which always leaves me weeping (not sobbing or crying) is - Woh Kagaz ki Kashti - it is a masterpiece from the Legend and I am sure anyone emotional would weep on that. I love breaking rules - and the safest bet is breaking my own rules as there are no legal punishments for breaking them - and moreover I do believe - rules are to be broken
