Active enough?

I've never been one to go to the Gym or exercise period. Don't get me wrong I tried some routine exercise for a couple of weeks but it just isn't for me. I work 8 hours a day and 90 percent of my job is walking, on my days off I'm always doing some sort of chore like cleaning shopping or just walking around through the neighborhood. I don't just sit around doing nothing. Do you exercise or you think your daily live is enough for you?

I don't excercise either. They say if you walk 30 min a day it's enough. I walk from 7 am till frequently 11 pm or longer. I take the bike or walk. During vacations I walk whole days, long distances, I carry heavy stuff, my kid, the shopping, lots of laundry I think this is more excercise as most people have.

Your lifestyle certainly does give you more exercise than most people. That is excellent.

I have tried on numerous occassions to maintain a schedule to do some excercise, when I was younger in 20's I used to go to the gym periodically with my hubby, but after the kids came around, between work, school and the kids I don't even have time to myself, how am I going to maintain a routine schedule to work out. That's just not happening. However I am hoping that once I finish my Bachelor's in a few months, I could try and at least make a routine to walk/jog for 30 to 45 minutes a day. Let's see what happens from here to then.

I do not think active people really have to exercise. I am very sedentary, however. When I was more active I could tell more about my fitness levels and they certainly were better. As my work efforts turned to more sitting jobs, I sure got out of shape. A good way to see about your fitness rate is to take your resting heart rate, and to see how easily you get fatigued. I wish I could borrow some of your fitness. That is part of why we are scheduling a walk at the lake.

This was an out of town lake, we have a job we do out there on occasion. I do admit we have it made though. In town we have awesome parks and some of them have small lakes and walking paths to make it easy to walk while enjoying nature.

I would love to have a lake nearby, that would make it so much more fun to walk.

A few months back I was walking most days then summer came and I was gardening lots and doing lots of other chores then I became busy going here and there a lot and the exercise pretty well dropped right off. Winter is coming again and I hope to get my treadmill set up again or else start walking again but at the moment it's just not about to happen as I'm still busy doing other stuff that doesn't involve much activity but needs to be done. I've lost 12 kilo in under a year and I'm pleased with that. If I can improve on that in the next year I'll be thrilled.

I personally need to make more of an effort to make some positive changes in my life. Seeing your discussion reminded me of how I need more exercise in general. I also have never been big on the idea of going to a gym, mainly for the fact I don't like people watching me, I get self consious (although I do think it's wonderful how they have different options like gyms for people who like to go there). I think if I had a tredmill or something I would feel more comfortable jogging in my house. Sometimes I'll go for a run or a walk outside on a nice day. I believe in having the right mindset will help you get through your exercise. If you aren't overally a fan of the actual work out, think of the results and the results will keep you wanting to work for it. Someone in your situation who gets enough exercise/movement and work or in their every day lives is always a good thing!

I couldn't have a job where i had to sit at the desk all day long, I'm glad I get at lrast my walking in throughout my daily routine at work.

I could not agree with you more! I don`t think I`d enjoy sitting at a desk all day long either. I`m more of a hands-on person, so I like to be moving around and stuff. Couldn`t agree more my friend :) Also, that`s awesome you get your walking through out a casual work day. It would save you time if say, you had a desk job and wanted to walk every day as well. You`d have to walk before or after work, where as, someone in your situation could get their work and walking done at the same time, so that could save a lot of time plus you still get enough physical movement for the day! And even if you had some free time, you could still go for a walk outside if you wanted too! Keep it up! Always good to have physical movement in your life, even if it`s not exercising or a sport, it still helps you keep your body active and healthy!!

I've never been one to want to go to the gym. To be honest, exercise is something that I've always found to be really zen like and I've always found that having other people around me feels distracting. My all time favourite thing to do used to be to run. I used to go for a run every single day, sometimes twice a day. I started because I was trying to lose some weight, but I just loved the mind set it put me in. I would get all my serious thinking done when I was running. I felt empowered and accomplished. I felt healthy and strong. If I was mad about something I would go for a run and it was like clearing my head. Almost as if I was running the mad right out of me. Over the course of the last few years I haven't gone running. I've gotten totally out of shape and am afraid that trying to get back into it will just frustrate me because I won't be able to go for the run I want to go for. It's one of those build it back up things. Which is doable, but frustrating until you get there. I have been feeling the need for the past few weeks to start trying again. We'll see... I used to live in the country and running through winding dirt roads felt amazing. Now I live in town and hate the thought of running on sidewalks, passing all the neighbours. It sort of feels like I might as well be on a treadmill at the gym :s

I live in the city and in order for me to run I would have to run along the street or try to go to the park which since I don't have a car I would have to take the bus there and that's just to much of a hassle, and I really hate running but I like to walk fast. I hope you get back into your running

I agree @ErinCW, although I live in town now, I grew up living in the country. I found I was much more energetic and willing to be outside when I lived in the country. It's beautiful living in the country where you can just go for a run on the beach in the sunset, have bonfires, go skating on peoples rinks, four wheeling, snowmobiling, anything because there's just so much space! I also like running in the country better the same as you do. It's much better to be running down a windy open road then to be, as you said, passing neighbors while they stare at you. Now that I live in town on my own, I don't have a car, so when I need to go get groceries or go anywhere I have to walk, take a cab, or pay a friend. @ErinCW, I wish you all the best of luck getting back into your running habits. As you said, it will be frustrating at first but just keep the end results in mind and push forward, and stay focused! It's all in the mindset :) Hope you do well, good luck! And lol @missybear, I'd much rather walk fast than run as well ;)

I find that exercise takes a lot of discipline and needs to be done regularly. I have had exercise bikes and cross trainers that I have used for a week or so and are now stored away in the garage.. But I got a Ninendo Wii with a Fitness Plus program and I have used it every day for the past 6 months. It is entertaining and challenging to win points with each exercise game and for the first time in my life, I actually look forward to using the Wii each day. I tried going to the gym but that got to be a problem as I could always find an excuse not to go. The Wii in my opinion, is the best investment in health, I have ever made.. _Derek

I used to think that daily activities were enough but then I realized that even if I walk a lot, my body gets used to the same thing every day and it does nothing for me, I had to change things up. Do some of the things you do every day in a different way. Maybe while no one is looking or paying attention, some of the walking that you do, you could try walking backwards, they say that walking backwards helps with different muscles than walking forward and helps with creativity.

Gosh missybear...I don't think I could handle another thing added right now. There wouldn't be anything left of me if I tried to add an exercise regiment. Throughout the day I probably only sit down for maybe an hour of the eight I am at work..then when I get off...it seems I am off to the races again. I am thinking my daily life is enough for me right now.

Both! like you I work 8 hours and I am on my feet all 8 of those hours even when I get home I dont slow down much kids' activities, homework, dinner, pets, and housework my life is busy enough to keep me fit BUT still I squeeze in a few excersizes to strengthen the muscles I dont normally use like my abs and my butt.

I never exercise intentionally. When I was younger I used to do daily crunches, but my memory has gotten so terrible (and I'm still only 23) that I can't remember to do it after the first day. My daily life is actually pretty calm, but in the warm months my husband and I walk together to run errands so we don't have to pay for gas, and that's always good exercise for me. Not to mention I'm a spontaneous dancer...no matter what I'm doing or where I'm at, sometimes I'll break out into random dance, and that tends to keep me fit all by itself. Haha. I also am very happy with my body and its metabolism, so I feel no need for additional exercise. I'm very tiny, at 5"3 and 100 pounds, and yet when one of my rental properties goes vacant (I own a real estate business) I'm the one in there repainting the whole place, installing fixtures, patching holes, etc. So even though my muscles aren't immediately obvious, they work for what they need to do! I'm very healthy, I simply don't have a lot of muscle...and I don't want it, either, so I'd say that yes, I'm definitely active enough.

walking is exercise it's the best thing you can do for yourself and your body, so you are exercise every day when you are walking at work so you are doing good there , i exercise added to my walking only because i have 3 bone issues and need to keep my bones strong as i can so the exercise helps to get them stronger , the point is for people to get off there butt.

I go to the gym, what I'm rreally after is the sauna and steam bath. It relaxes my muscles and also it somehow gives me the satisfaction I want. An hour at the gym is more than enough to keep me going the whole day, I feel energized afterwards.

Well, I think our daily live is not enough of course. I think the least we can do is to eat healthy. Exercises are an extra activity to our life, that could really increase our happiness and health. I started to train in the gym for a year and a half and I started to feel much much happier then before and I also achieved an inner peace to myself and this is incredibly good achievement if you ask me. I think that exercising is gonna reflect perfectly on everyone. Not only that you build your body with exercises, but you build your mind too. Wish you the best !

You don't have to go to the gym to get fit, and that is something that I have learned as I have lost over 6 stone in the past 14 months without going anywhere near a gym at all. I will do running/jogging/walking around my area, and bought a cheap bike so that I am able to carry on exercising when my legs are too tired to run anymore. The walking in your work sounds as though it will be keeping you nice and fit, so you should just make sure that you're eating the right foods and that should be enough for you to keep yourself healthy.

Hi Missy. I used to jog almost 3x a week.. For this month though, i still have not jogged because i am afraid that i may not tolerate the heat. I am afraid of heatstroke. What i do to compensate is just to lessen my food intake.

Before, I always exercise in the morning. But now, I'm too lazy to do that. I think I'm living a bum life. I want to have a healthy lifestyle, but I guess I'm just too lazy to do it. There's not enough motivation in my part.
