i love it when my houseplants bloom

Houseplants in Bloom - A couple of my African Violets in Bloom. So pretty!

I'v never had much of a green thumb. I used to have a lot of houseplants but because I moved often (every 2-3 years) and it was almost impossible to take my plants with me, I got out of the habit. Well, recently, due to lifestyle changes, I'm not moving anymore so have acquired a few houseplants again. I absolutely LOVE it when they bloom. I get so excited to see a few flower buds appear. Then I watch daily to see their progress. There's just something about a houseplant, especially one in bloom, that brightens my day.

I LOVE pot plants! Regardless of whether they are flowering ones or not, I just love having them around the house. It even got to the stage a couple of years ago that I had to give some away because it was beginning to look like a jungle here LOL I had been taking cuttings from some green hanging plants and growing them from scratch and there were just too many! This year I have no flowering plants yet. I was away most of last year and I still haven't got straight since I came back. Next week warmer weather is forecast here which means we can have the windows open all day long and that is when I like to have the windowsills filled with flowering plants. African violets like yours will be one of my choices too

Is it incorrect to call them 'pot' plants? It seems I am having a lot of luck with spider plants of late - and they will be the next ones that will have to be given away too I have a white Christmas cactus that has survived 5 years so far, inckluding last year when I was away most of the time - and it flowered even though no-one was watering it for months at a time. Oh you didn't know we can comment on photos? I don't comment often but those reminded me of Mother's plants so much that I justhad to stop by and add something.

Nope, I didn't know that we could comment on pictures. In fact, that was the first picture I've put up. Glad that you did comment though, and that they brought back some good memory for you. As far as calling them pot plants...well, if that's what you're growing then call them what they are. I don't grow any pot myself. I have some potted plants though! I find the same thing with the Christmas Cactus. They require very little attention and just keep blooming. They're great and one of my favourites for just that reason.

Not many flowers bloom indoors and you have made the right choice by planting African violets. They are ideal for window sills. If you want greenery indoors then Diefenbachias are the most ideal. They even grow where there is absolutely no sun. Since I have a huge garden I don't need to plant anything indoors and with the clear glass windows I have, my outdoor garden is visible from all corners of my hall. Happy gardening!

Yes, I've had Diefenbachias before as well. Very nice plants and they can grow to be very big! The problem I have with larger plants now though is that my cats will dig in the dirt and use it as a litter box! Therefore I tend stick to smaller plants now.

Since Diefenbachias need no fuss you could place some pebbles to cover the soil. Pebbles look good too. They could be removed occasionally. I have done that in several of my landscaped garden designing projects where I have provided water cascades indoors and pebbles placed in potted plants to hide the soil.

Great idea! Don't know if it would keep the cats away or not but it would be worth a try!

The ones in that picture are about 3 years old. They take a while to grow that big.

I share your happiness seeing plants especially flowers in bloom. They do add enthusiasm and brighten my day. They do challenge me as if saying, if I can make wonderful flowers, why can't you? Nature is indeed mysterious.

Are those the actual pictures of your plants? They're beautiful. I've always imagined a small garden with different plants in front our house. I wanted to have bonsai plants, shrubs, and a few flowers and orchids. But, I never got to materialized those visions. I don't have experience in growing and taking care of plants and I'm afraid that I'm just going to be investing and not getting anything out of it, when all plants die on me.

Our househelper managed to take care of a few plotted plants on our frontyard. I think those were just given to him by some friendly neighbors. There's one plant that grows red pepper, and it's been producing its fruits regularly. I was amazed to see it bloom that much under a hot weather. We just had to water it 2x a day.

Yes those are my plants. I have one more African Violet like them but it's small and hasn't flowered yet. You would be surprised at what you can do with plants. You just have to find one that does well in your conditions i.e. the amount of light you have coming in your windows etc.

I bring in some that bloom in the winter, but even just the green ones lift my spirits in the winter. I did not move a lot in the last thirty some years, but I have had some good years and some not so good. I like being able to put them out in the summer so that they can get strong.

I put some of mine out in the nice weather as well as it does seem to make them thrive. Especially the Christmas Cactus. I put them out to soak up lots of sun and then they bloom so nicely in the winter months. I agree, plants in general, even the green ones tend to lift ones spirits!

hi suebee I also loved it but am out of an apartment and into a retirement center.big whoopedy do!! but compared to living on the streets in homeless shelters it is the best we co uld do three'years ago.I used to have African violets and primroses and philodendron that hung to the floor but we moved so much I final had to give them away. I have been thinking of getting one or two African violets to have something green and growing they do not take up a lot of space and the blooms are so pretty.I love it too when they come to bloom.

Hi Mrs Hatley. If you have room at the retirement home you should get a couple. They really do a lot to make it feel more homey for you! As long as you have some good light for them in your place it's a great idea.

Nature is still the most fascinating things and no matter how tech savvy we become, you always like it when you observe these small things. I have a small terrace garden of my own and I get equally excited whenever the new plants bloom. Watering them in the evenings is my most fulfilling activity.

My mother has a green thumb herself and she has a couple of beautiful plants all over our place. She has bonsai or small plants, some big ones. She makes a living out of it by having them displayed in some establishments or even banks and they pay her monthly.

Wow! What a great way to make a living! I didn't even know that banks and places like that pay monthly for their plants. That is fantastic. She must be really good at it and have some very nice, healthy plants. I envy her!

Yes, it's too bad that the flowers only last for a certain period of time. But then, there are always new ones coming later...

That was nice and congrats.;) Gardening is sometimes not that easy specially in the wild changes in weather and to see plant/flowers bloom can really make a day. I used to have a small garden before and it was a vegetable garden. I really love eating fresh vegetables and those taste better.

Maybe you can try to plant those easy to grow vegetables like onions, bitter gourd and lady fingers. Those are easy to grow on places with tropical climates. Better to search for vegetables that are easy to grow on different type of weather or conditions to have more possibility of success on it. ;)
