So...Where did your name come from?

Philippines
May 16, 2012 6:23am CST
Did you ever ask your parents which of them had given you your name and what inspired them to give that name to you? Me? I always ask, but I don't really get any interesting story about the history of my name. Just that my Mom heard it and she was quite surprised that it could actually be use for girls as well. Don't get me wrong I really love my name, but I do envy other people who have interesting stories behind their given name. I haven't learned yet so I'll torment myself more about this so I'm still gonna ask you, lol! So where did your name come from anyway? Please share me your wonderful stories, so I'll get jealous of it even more. *wink*

I think I have an interesting story about where my name comes from. My father and my mother at that time were girlfriend and boyfriend, my father had to go for the military service , they got engaged and he promesed my mom to comeback and marry her after he finished it. While he was at the militar place , my father met another woman felt atracted to her , but , he was engaged with my mom, well, after 2 years he finished his service he went back to the town where my mom was and got marry with her, they had 9 children and I am the number 10th of the family , all those years he talked to my mom about that lady , when I was borned my father asked my mom if they could name me that lady s name, my mom wasnt that jealous and said yes, it was ok with her , so, I got that name, (only that name so , people can call me that name), after that, my father stoped talking about that lady , and we lived happily ever after.

You have a good Mom, it really surprises me to hear stories like this. I have also a friends whose name came from his father's former love interest, so your Mom is really cool to have let your Father named you after the girl. ^^ Your Father is awesome too! :D

I was named after my paternal grand mother and in those days the home people never called you by the real name but by a name that was totally 'murdered'! Whenever I misbehaved they would say 'she has taken after the grandmother!'

Let's assume the name is Angelina - not my real name and that would be Anju!

Hmm..I'm really curious about this 'murdered' thing. What do you really mean by that? LOL! I usually hear that actually! :D

Oh, I see. I've known someone from my childhood whose name for real is Christian but his nickname was Brutus. The latter doesn't really sound appealing to my country so I guess that's just the same as 'murdered' name. I now understand.

Your ex's name! Wow, your partner is amazing then, to have let you name your child with it. I like the sound of Dawn, it's really nice and have some deep implications in it. Joshua, or not? I like that name too, it sounds so serene to me. :D

Seeing this thread made me smile. My parents actually were expecting a baby boy and they already decided on a male name but then, God gave them a baby girl. So they just chose the female variation of that name. Instead of just forgetting about that "baby boy thing", they gave me a baby boy's nickname instead. =D

You can start using a nickname if you want. ;) In our culture, most people have nicknames. Some nicknames sound silly. XD Apart from the 1st letter of my 1st name and my nickname, my nickname's a bit not connected to my 1st name at all. So when people ask why I have such nickname, I have to share the history of my name to them. Hehe! =D I'm really thankful that they gave a female name though. I couldn't imagine myself being called by a male's name. XD

Aww..that's cute, I've also heard from a friend that her parents had the same situation as yours. They were expecting a boy but her Mom gave birth to a girl, but the difference is, they still named the child the same name they would've given to a baby boy. ^^ You have a nickname too! That's purely awesome...I don't really have one actually, I'm kind of jealous with nick names too! LOL! Silly me right? ^^

I had a nickname before, but when I grew up my family stopped calling me by that name. I think they've only used it to baby when I'm still a child. I really like nicknames because unlike other countries, when you call a person by the nickname in our country, it means that you're close or affectionate to the person.

Wow, I bet the doctor was really flattered and happy when he/she learned that the baby he helped to be given birth to this world had been named after him/her. I think if I were the doctor I would really feel wonderful and it's really refreshing. ^^

Aww...that's wonderful, your name has a meaning too. I'm now having a guessing-game for all the responses I've got. But mostly, I really don't have any idea, like yours I really don't know much about gems and their symbolism. It's hard to guess what's yours. ^^

My first name came from an English actress in a movie my parents saw. My middle name my dad says he made up, it is similar to the name of a flower. When I search it now it comes up as being the nick name of a wealthy young lady a long time ago. My son, I just liked the name, I wanted something different and strong. My daughter is named by a friend of mine, at least her first name. Her middle name was one I liked but I did not like it for a first name. Again, I wanted a strong name. My son's name means a noble one who conquers or a conquering noble one. My daughter's name means called of God and triumphant or victorious. I kind of try to feel the personality of my child before it is born and match it with a name.

I have little ideas about your children's names, although not specifically. ^^ I've had my share of knowledge when it comes to name meanings because I've searched mine before and stumbled upon other names. ^^ It's nice that you feel their personalities first before deciding for a name, wouldn't want them to have names that doesn't really suit them right? :D You're a good parent. :D

my dad told me that when he was a teenager, he had a dream. in this dream, he met a girl. her name was michelle dianne. he thought it was the name of his future wife. instead, he married a girl who's name is juanita dianne. they had a baby girl..ME. dad told her about his dream and she agreed to use the name on me. so that's how i got my name. when i had my daughter, i named her after her grandmother (on her dad's side) and my mother's best friend- Patricia. then i passed down the middle name...dianne. she's told me that when she has a baby girl, she's going to keep the middle name going as a family tradition. :) i look forward to the day i get to meet the newest dianne in the family! (hopefully, i'll be waiting for a few years).

My father gave me the name with my mother agreement. They both decided it. They hope I'll be a generous and good human with the name. But ooh.... it's really a common name in my country. There were always some kids with the same name in my class. Can you imagine how many times I turned around when I heard 'my name' called then found out it wasn't me? However, I still like this name.

Yeah, that's actually the reason why I'm very happy with my name because I've never had any classmate or any acquaintance who had the same name as me, so I was never confused when people are just shouting and calling the name of the other. I actually had 2 best friends in elementary and coincidentally, they have the same name and they both do not have second names either, so it's kinda hard when you call the other and both will turn their heads to you.

My name is derived from one of the president of USA. But with a slight twist on the spelling, my name becomes somewhat original. I know many people with the common spelling of my name, but I have yet to see anyone having similar name spelled the way mine is.

*grumbles* I don't have much luck on guessing the names of the respondents..and I'm not very familiar with US Presidents too so I don't have any idea what's your name..'?3? It's great that even if your name is quite common, the spelling of your version is very much unique that you've never met anyone with the name same as yours. My sister is like that too, we've never encountered anyone with the same spelling as her, even in the internet. ^^

It's a common tradition in our country, to have name similarities with our siblings. My Mother and Father had named me and my siblings with J as first letter, that's the tradition in our humble family. ^^ Maybe you should now ask your parents why did they give you you first name, who knows, there might be a good story behind it! :D

I was named after my godmother (who was more like a grandmother to me, since I never got to meet any of my other grandparents). Anyways, my parents basically met through her and so that's how my first name came along. My middle name is from my maternal grandmother and I guess my mom wanted me to be named after her in some way. I was going to be named either Juanita (but my parents thought it would be too hard for me and other people to spell or pronounce) or if I was a boy I would most likely have been named Donnie (which is the name of my dad... and my mom's ex... and her son...)

Wow...then your name which came from your godmother proves that you're the lovechild of your Mom and Dad. I can't help it but it really sounds romantic to me, for your Mom and Dad to meet through your Godmother, and them deciding their child to be named after her, it's so sweet!? So are you the first born then? (You don't have to answer if you're not feeling comfortable, sorry for prying I'm just really a curious kitten.^^)

First I must confess Sarah Ruth Beth is the name I wish I was born with. My real name I hate with every fiber of my being. Almost everyone either misspells it or mispronounces it. As a little girl I took it that I didn't deserve my name to be correct. it really didn't matter. As A teen I pi$$ed me off that I had to correct Everybody. The ironic thing is , my name is my mom's favorite girl name. I was told I was named Before I was a glimmer in my dad's eye, lol. But i hate it! Funny , both my sister and my mom hate their given names too. So on paper and a work I'm my hated name but here I'm Sarah Ruth Beth. How did I come up with Sarah Ruth Beth? Well I always loved the name Sarah And I wanted to add Beth, a form of my real middle name Elizabeth. But when I came here There was a Sarah Beth here already so I thought about it and added Ruth, another name I love. Now I love my name I use here!

The good thing is once I got to use Sarah I began to like myself more! Now when people butcher my other nsme I don't get upset because I'm Sarah! It's weird! Yes both my mom used a form of her middle name and my sister uses her middle name. I guess I could have gone by a form of my middle name but I never thought of it. And I guess I could have legally changed it like my sister did but since it is my mom's favorite name and I lose her in 2005 I see this move as disrespectful. she was hurt to find out how much I hated my name. I never told her how low I felt Having to correct everybody. it made me feel like a nothing . at the time she was happy I was still here though. So That is why I still have it as a legal name.

I was named after my great grandfather. Or, so my family thought. I was 3.5 months old when he passed away & that was when everyone found out that he lied about his middle name. It was really Stanley not Samuel like he told everyone. I'm grateful that he lied, I like Samantha better than Stella anyways! ;-)

Nope... he really just didn't like it. My mother is the same way. Her middle name is Stella & she tells everyone it's Sue. I have a copy of her birth certificate so she can't lie to me ;-)

Your Grandpa was a mysterious guy huh. ^^ It's kinda funny that he had kept his real name from his relatives, although it could also be caused by an error when his birth certificate was made. My father had the same problem before, his Birth and Baptismal certificate had different names so he had underwent legal procedures to fix it. Yeah, Samantha sounds really nice. :D

MY name is a very common name.. and it means flowers.. and I have asked my parents about who selected this name for me.. and it was a usual answer.. which is again common here.. the name is selected according to the astrology which consider the time and date on birth ..sometimes the place and name of parents too..

I'd actually want to see a calendar like that too. ^^

My first-name--Jason ... it could've been just `coz a lot of cool people had that name, it could've been because some people (doctors, accountants, nerds, etc.) had researched some name-meanings and told my parents that the name that means closest to 'medicine-man' is "Jason." My middle-name--Harry--was my dad's middle-name. Means "home-ruler," in case you're curious. My last-name--Hubbard--was the last-name of my grandfather's foster-parents, so I'm tempted to take my mom's maiden-name---Determan, which means "paid-for worker."

Yeah, I also couldn't find my last name on 'Behind the Surname' (like 'Behind the Name,' sites you can "Search the Web" for and maybe find your names' histories), tho my mom went to "Mother Hubbard's" in Ireland on her trip there, which might be where my last name comes from. And yeah, Jason the 'Master of the House' (one of my favorite Karaoke-songs from Les Miserables) who the Greek Jews (who were not moved to Christianity by Paul) dragged out into the public square when searching for Paul to accuse him of blaspheming Caesar. But wasn't the Argonauts' Jason first?

When I asked my mother where she got my name, she said my god mother suggested it. I was born in the month of December since it was the birth month of Jesus my godmother decided to get my name from Christ and Mary. My first name was taken from Mary and my second name was the girl version of Christ. Everything came from the suggestion of my god mother.
