So now 2 women have flesh eating bacteria

United States

Now a woman who just gave birth to twins has got flesh eating bacteria. She is not responding to anyone. The doc did surgery on her keg and they think they got it all. That girl Amy may even Lose her torso because the flesh eating bacteria is still in her. She lost one leg that I know of and she lost her fingers. If they end up taking the other leg and remove her hips up to her torso, when will it stop? This could kill her. This really makes me sad for both women. We haven't heard about flesh eating bacteria here before and now there are too? I'm wondering if there could be bioterrorism behind this somehow. What are your thoughts?

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0195670100909149 MRSA is a mutant staph bacteria and it mutated due to the over use of antibiotics. It used to be found only in hospitals and nursing homes, but now is found in the community. A friend's son got it from a source out in the community. As a healthcare worker I've seen hundreds of cases in the residents of nursing homes, and see it also in our hospital patients regularly. Bacteria will mutate to survive. MRSA has been around for decades, it is now becoming even more resistant and dangerous. It is also estimated that MRSA can lie dormant in the human nostrils for many years and healthcare workers who've been exposed may carry it without being aware. To avoid catching it, take bleach wipes with you to the store and wipe the surfaces of the shopping cart. Wipe surfaces where you set food to eat when out in public. Wash wash wash your hands after touching any surface outside your home. And if you must be admitted to a healthcare facility, INSIST all who enter your room wash their hands before touching you.

Yes this is MRSA, in a worse form. It is also like VRE. Deb, your comment about lying dormant in nostrils makes using saline rinses a good bet for clearing things out, or swimming in a chlorinated pool. People with weakened immune systems are even more susceptible. Like pregnant and recently delivered women as well as children, the elderly and people with underlying medical problems.

I had no idea it was MRSA because the news never said that. It's really scary. I have a strong immune system so I don't think I'll ever get that.

Wow, I haven't heard this but after reading your post, it kind of scares me a little. I have so many questions about the issue and it's a little scary knowing that doctors aren't even able to do anything to help. Maybe they got the bacteria from being in another country? I know I used to see shows about invasive parasites that people get from visiting other countries. A guy my dad used to work with even got one in his brain and luckily they were able to catch it before things got too out of hand. I hope this isn't some form of bioterrorism, it would be horrifying to know that people were capable of doing something like this and it would add a whole new fear to everybody

Wow, that's awful. Having a positive outlook is definitely going to help her in the long run. If she's a tough fighter with that kind of mindset, it's going to be harder for anything to bring her down. Hopefully doctors will be able to come up with some sort of solution to this

I don't know what is causing this condition. So far Amy is having a good attitude ablutions everything. She has list so much now. She has the palms if her hands but no fingers and one leg is gone up to the hip. The news said something about they may have to amputate up to her torso. The mom of twins isn't even responding. It just saddens me.

I have heard about this off and on for years. It is a staph infection of a resistant type. I have even seen people on television who got it in gym lockers. That does not make it any less sad to hear about. I am not up to date on the cases you are talking about, though.I do not think it is bioterrorism, but rather I think it stems from the misuse and over prescribing of antibiotics in our society And the over use of anti microbial cleaning products. It has allowed this bacteria to mutate and flourish. I do not know what can be done, but I understand you are more likely to get it in medical facilities than anywhere else.

Oh no. Please don't say that. It's too cruel to think about. It's a very sad disease. How quickly does it affect them to that extreme. I know people who have diabetes have issues with losing limbs and toes and such. Is it like that or something that affects in a more quickly? God bless the woman.

It's a staph infection that moves very fast. Now there is a man in the hospital. He has it eating his front and back. Not sure if it has got into his lungs yet.

Its necrotizing fasciitis, but that is the medical term used all over. Its probably the worst kind of infection in that it requires reopening the body to remove the tissue! Notoriously difficult to eradicate! Nevertheless its not impossible! However, the best advice would be to avoid contamination of breaks in skin!!! Its definitely not bio terrorism!!!

No its been around for some time! Guess the reporter just happened to be there this time!! I feel the same! I hope the surgeons can remove it once and for all!

Necrotizing fasciitis I think I heard it's called, there are some kind of bacteria involved but I wouldn't be able to say which bacteria for sure. If someone wants to search more, check on the internet. Mortality can be up to 70% if left untreated, and those who react fast can lose tissue or even limbs. I remember back in 1994, a Canadian politician was diagnosed with this and lost a leg, but he is fine now. I dont think this will become an outbreak. So we can be safe.

I hope so. Tve heard if flesh eating bacteria in other countries but I've never heard of it here before. I hope this won't start affecting lots of people. I thought maybe that people with low immune systems might be more vulnerable than others. I'm always getting cut or banged up. So far I've not had any infections.

This is interesting, and Scary at the same time. For people like me who already have problems with constant infections, etc. it seems like anymore you need to almost be cautious where you are, who you come in contact with, etc. Makes you wonder who is responsible for this, and how are they able to keep others safe? All I know is this is not something most people would want to know about, and my thoughts and Prayers are with them and their families.

Nothing new, here. It is something that can be caught in the hospital, just like staff infection. It is scary. I know 2 people that had it and had to have it treated. Both of them had it on their back side. They spent a long time in the hospital, and in a nursing home, to get it cleared up.

They haven't said anything about it being a nosocomal (hospital born) infection. They also have not called it MRSA. if it us those things they haven't said it.

Gosh how scary. I hope that both these women will be ok and not die from it. How sad the one has already lost a leg and her fingers. How will she ever be able to live a normal life after that. The one who just had a baby I wonder if its possible that the baby will get it to. What a tragic thing to read about. It is such a sad thing that can happen to people.

I think the one that had a baby had twins. I might be wrong but I think that was right. Now there is a man in Augusta hospital which is where one of the women was at too.

I just read this from yahoo news and it's really sad and alarming too. If two women already got this bacteria- imagine if more people will be affected soon. We never knew if this bacteria is not spreading silently :(

Thinking about it gives me the goose bumps. It sounds scary to have that kind of uncontrollable ailment eating you up. Our health authorities should act real quick to find the fastest cure for this malady.

I'm so scared for these people. They had to cut away some of Amy's abdomen too. From my understanding she has lost one leg and hip up to her torso and the other foot and all of get fingers. She may lose her palms if she hasn't already.

I'm not sure what country you are from, but if it was Bio-terrorism, I'm sure hundreds or thousands of people would have been infected by now, not just 2 people. I feel sad for these ladies too, and especially the one who just had a babies... Pretty sad!

Wow, it is hard to imagine going through what those 2 women have to endure. Did they get this bacteria from a hospital? It sounds like the woman who just gave birth may have contracted it from the hospital. It always worries me with hospitals, because you think they are "sterile", but there are plenty of diseases waiting on a host to come along. I hope these women can make it through, and I wouldn't think it to be bio-terrorism because there are only 2 cases.
