I Decided To Bake At The Strange Time Of 8.30PM. Do You Ever Do This?

Earlier I was sat here at my computer (John has gone out playing snooker) and I thought to myself, "What a wonderful world"..er..not really, I was thinking, "I fancy making some oat biscuits." So I made some, at the strange time of 8.30pm! Oh my, the smell of the oats and syrup and sugar and all those ungodly ingredients makes me want to... EAT THEM ALL!! Haha! Have you ever baked at an ungodly hour? Was there a specific reason why or did you just fancy it?

The funny thing is that I never got the urge to bake anything. Especially at 8:30 at night. I have had the urge to eat something baked at night. LOL. After I eat dinner, I can never think about food. For some reason the thought of it makes me feel queasy. My girl friend on the other hand has no problem baking something small like muffins at 9 or 10 at night.

I'm rubbish at muffins! Made some jam/coconut ones a while back and I could do with asking your girlfriend what I did wrong because I haven't got a clue! Mind you, I've baked some Sticky Ginger Fairy Cakes a few times since then..and they're awesome, believe me. I bake them in a silicone bun "tray" which does away with individual cases and each time I bake them the buns NEVER stick, as that's the beauty of silicone. Easy to clean too, which is an added bonus. It does vary in quality though. I was lucky as mine was half-price so I bought the "tray" I mentioned plus a cake mould for the price of one of them..so, basically, I got two for the price of one. Believe me, for Denby, this is brilliant.

A muffin mix? Unheard of for me; that would take the joy out of baking but there again I am old-fashioned.

Well I could tell you exactly how she made them. She buys the instant mi and mixes it up and puts it in the cup cake pan and bakes it in the oven. If she were to make it from scratch, she would freak out. I am sure she could, but I doubt she would want to go through all that just for muffins.

I once baked at 03:30AM , there wasn't any specific reason for that its because I don't sleep during the night I mean I usually am sleeping in the presence of daylight so I have don a lot of cooking and baking after midnight and before day light appears but I do wake up during the day on Sundays so its not like I missing out Vitamin D or anything like that. I am actually not much of a cook but you see I'm the only one awake when I am so I have to do that myself. I usually make chocolate cup cakes but I live in India so there are not a lot of traditional recipes that require a lot of baking my ancestors preferred tandoors its not anything like baking but it heats evenly and more importantly gives a nice crisp to whatever you might be cooking and if anything is cooked in a tandoor then its called tandoori for instance tandoori kebab or tandoori roti/bread/naan ..you might've heard of it

How interesting! Yes, I have heard of a tandoor and I absolutely LOVE naan bread. It's not something I've eaten a lot of but I am familiar with it. I'd love to make my own one day but could it be made in a conventional electric oven like mine?

Awww, sorry I didn't realise..but good for you for having a go.

Well you can make a naan without a tandoor but there isn't really a substitute to the real thing but "the real thing" is not very easy to work with so I think we should stick with what we know , even I'm not very good with using it nobody has them in a regular kitchen they're only used by professionals or Dhaba(sort of a restaurant) owners , there are some electric tandoors I've used but none of them really work and I have the whirlpool JT360 the jet chef , its a 31L Convection Microwave oven with crisp , jet stream and "sixth sense", anyways the Crisp functionality in that thing doesn't even come close so I'm not sure if any electric oven would do any better. But I don't know everything so give it a try , after all I just turned 18 and I'm a guy so how much could I know about cooking.

Janey, have you ever heard of cornmeal pancakes? They are really good with syrup and butter! Not too many people have ever eaten any, but my grandparents used to make them quite often!

Unbelievably, I made my first fried egg the other day (I've done poached and boiled) but, only hubby eats them which is probably why I've not bothered previously. It turned out really well too, I'm pleased to say! I guess a pancake is the next step up and I WILL make one one day and you'll be the first to know if I do.

I used to do that when I was young. My husband was away from home at least once a week and I stayed up listening to music, reading or making cakes and other stuff that I ate in quantities and I did not gain an ounce.

Unfortunatly, my whole sentence was in past tense. Now things are not like that. I eat and gain weight. Then I feel guilty, it causes me anxiety, so I eat more. And so on

Wow, I wish that would happen to me (not gaining any ounces) lol.

It still fine to bake at that time. I used to bake a chocolate cake at night but there were few times when I still awake and baked after 12 at night. When my mom asked why, I just said that that time everyone is sleep so no one will disturb me or get in or out of the kitchen. The kitchen is small so it will be a problem for me to do it and having a few people there at the same time...(^^)

What a great idea! Baking when everyone is in bed. There are only two of us here but, funnily enough, when I made the biscuits last night my husband was out..so I just fancied doing them..as you do!

Baking at 8:30pm isn't strange...Bread Bakers are up in what I'd consider the middle of the night to have fresh breads ready for morning..There's a Chocolate Mug cake recipe online that you can mix up and bake in a microwave in about 10 minutes ..So,that's chocolate cake available ANYTIME you want it

Funnily enough, this afternoon I made a Chocolate Brownie cake that can be cooked in the microwave too. I've done one before and it was yummy but this one wasn't as good. For one thing, I only had one egg (it uses two) plus the fact I forgot to put some vanilla extract in it. Just goes to show that recipes should be followed to the letter, otherwise the finished article just isn't the same. Still edible though. We had it with some ice cream and for ONCE it IS ice cream weather!

At 8.30pm I'm normally still cooking, or have just finished cooking, and the last thing I feel like doing is MORE cooking! Saying that, what's wrong with cooking in the middle of the night if you fancy it? there's not a set time for doing the things you fancy, and a nice oat biscuit to head off to bed with later sounds divine. Mmmmmmm .....

The only time I’ve baked at an unusual hour has been when I forgot to provide cupcakes for my daughter’s birthday and had to madly rush around the kitchen attempting to put something edible together for the children! I am not great in the kitchen and, because any type of cooking is not my forte` I only bake when I need to or during the school holidays as a fun activity with my daughter (fun for her not so much for me, lol!) Good on you for doing what you fancy and making delicious oat biscuits! I believe that you should follow your instincts and do what you love to do whenever you can so I’m with you, who cares what time it is as long as you enjoy what you are doing. I can almost smell those biscuits all the way from here! Yum…

Yeah I have baked at late hours. I did this last night. Last night I didn't get to the store until around 5:30-6:00 pm to get the items for supper. Then when I got home around seven I started making dinner. I had to make chicken, salad and baked a pudding cake. All that took about two hours. So we had a late dinner and supper. The reason for that it because we recently started having quality time together on monday evenings after my daughter lays down for bed. It was all very good and tasty.

What a great idea and it's obviously worked for you. Good for you in making the effort, I'm impressed! I've just made some flapjack with chocolate chips in it but I've used an egg that had two yolks in it, so it seems to be taking a LOT longer to bake than usual. Oh well, I'm sure it will be edible!

I haven't baked anything yet in my life but in the future I would love to be able to know how to bake. I remember when one night I decided to make myself a cup of coffee. My mom was really weirded out at me. I was just really craving for coffee that night.

8:30's nothing LOL I been baking at 2am in the morning quite a number of times! Bread! Cookies! Pies! Cakes! Yummy. For the longest time I was nocturnal. Sleeping in the daytime and baking in the nighttime. Thankfully I stopped that and forced myself to go to bed at 10pm so I can wake up btwn 7 and 8 in the morning. It was draining me. I don't want to get back to that routine again.

Sounds like you had insomnia to me! Mind you, it's not a bad idea to do something rather than just to lie there but fortunately, I've been sleeping well lately. Glad you're back to a normal day. Bet that's a relief!

Hi, Janey, you did a good job! I bet that your husband was delighted. As I'm concerned, I live with my daughter, I work a lot and I don't spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Your story seems so yummy that I suddenly had a desire to bake something. I have no problems to do it in the evening, 8.30pm is a good time. But to bake at 8.30am? Never! Good night!

There has been a few times in my life when I will get up and bake in the middle of the night when I am unable to sleep. It's something I enjoy doing and can do easily. Usually when the mood strikes in the middle of the night, I bake whatever looks good, but also whatever is readily available.

Yes, well I've made these oat biscuits before and I knew I had the ingredients in, plus the fact they take no time at all to prepare and bake. I wouldn't fancy doing anything more elaborate than biscuits at this time and I've got rid of all my washing-up too, like a good little girl lol.
