The MIL Is A Control Freak Even When She's Not Here

Ian, my FIL hardly did any wallpapering on Wednesday as he had to go into work. Fair enough..he can do more on Saturday was my initial thought. How wrong was I! John had just taken me to the Chemist early on Saturday afternoon and it only took 10 minutes in the car. In the meantime (and the morning too) Ian had got cracking with the wallpapering, including some more on the ceiling which is very difficult due to how high it is. He'd been here about 2 and a half hours, something like that and his mobile phone must've rang whilst he was upstairs. When me and John came back from the shop he asked John to give him the mobile phone that was in the living-room. He obliged. The conversation between Ian and his Mrs was unbelievable as the tone of his voice TOTALLY changed! From what I can gather she wanted to know how long he was going to be. He asked her why and she told him she wanted to go to Town. At that point I felt like shouting up the stairs, "Tell her to use the bus, it's free for her!" but I didn't. Instead he fannied round her and was back home during the next hour or so..and he didn't come back, only to pick up the long ladders this morning. That woman does my head in and I'm glad she's going on a cruise with him for 10 days. Hope she's got a bullet-proof vest as they're going to volatile areas of the world..on the cheap probably. Also, their daughter is having to give them a lift at 4am just so they save a bit of cash from using a taxi to Glasgow Airport.

It seems that you will finish your wallpapering in ten days at least.Your MIL called your FIL off at the time when It would soon be finished .What for? I think it stands to reason that she was hinting "what I say goes. "

My MIL doesn't like her husband going off and doing things all by himself, especially if it "over-runs" in time (as she sees it) so that's when she chooses to ring up. If she hadn't Ian would've been here for at least a couple more hours but she wanted him to take her to Town, and that was that. It's what I mean about him having no balls. I stand by that comment even more now.

It was very mean of her to prescribe a time limit for your FIL coming back if he went out.I now understand why you call her control freak.

Sounds like she's in charge because he allows her to be. Also, it sounds to me like she might just need a life-preserver on top of that bullet-proof vest, just in case someone gets fed up with her on that cruise! Enjoy the 10 days or so while she's gone.

Hahahaha!!! Thank you for that laugh! It was the best laugh I've had in a long time. I'm picturing your MIL now with a smokestack and anchor attached to her.

For part of the time she's away I'll be at MY Mum's some 100 miles away, so that will be a nice change for me..Mum's coming here first of course, like she always does. She's nowhere near as domineering as the MIL I'm pleased to say. Haha! Great comment about a life-preserver although she wouldn't be able to buy a bullet-proof vest big enough for her huge bulk. In fact, she rather looks like the Titanic without the bling!

Well, there's only my MIL that annoys me but my FIL does give into his wife's every whim, just so to keep the peace. This is why the woman is so stubborn and gets upset when I come along and don't tow the line. I used to but not anymore. This is also the reason why my FIL comes round to do the decorating all by himself which, believe me, is an achievement in itself!

That must be hard. I'm thankful my MIL isn't at all like that. She does like to call me in the morning while I'm at work just to chat. But she's nothing like that.

It is hard but I'm convinced I'm going to get a job this year (which is why the in-laws get involved with decorating anyway) so, if I'm successful I can become more independent from them and start to plan things WITHOUT their input, something that's very important to me. My husband doesn't care who is responsible for the decorating (which is half the problem) but if he sees I'm keen and saving up for things I think he'll come round to the idea.

She tries to rule this one but gets nowhere 'cos I'm in the way. Haha!
