When It's Hot We Want It Cold; When It's Cold We Want It Hot

We're a strange bunch..us Brits, especially when it comes to the weather. Since about last Tuesday we've had wall-to-wall sunshine and - at first - I thought, "Great, a bit of sun at last, the rain was doing my head in!" Well, now I'm sick of it being too hot! You see, in this country at least, it starts off at a nice 19 or 20 degrees C but after that it gets hotter and hotter and today it was 25 degrees C..not good for my John, who has red hair and absolutely HATES the sun! It's very uncomfortable at night too as it doesn't cool down much. Mind you, by about Thursday, it's set to cool down "to around 17 - 19 degrees C which is normal for this time of year." I bet you any money we'll moan once it goes dull again. We always do! Is it the same where you are or is it just us Brits who have this strange relationship with weather fronts. Haha!

It is not just you guys in Britain we do the same thing in America. We are always complaining about the weather here as well. Today it was 96 degrees and we had to go to a graduation party, it was hot and miserable, so of course we all complained. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 80's so perhaps people will be happier, of course if it doesn't rain for a week or two people complain about that and then if it rains for 2 days straight people complain about that, I guess we just can't be happy no matter what country we live in.

@Bulastika, I looked up for some discussion the other day. 35C is the same as 93F, so I suppose our 96 is really similar to your 37 Either way it is hot.

96 degrees? Is that in Celsius or in Fahrenheit? Because if its in Celsius then I guess its almost boiling point. lols. I guess different countries use different barometer to check or forecast weather temperature. In my country we use Celsius in here and its very hot in here about 37 degrees celsius.

I think she means Fahrenheit as we used to use that system over here but changed some years ago to be more European.

Well, you Brits do have a reputation for being Whinging Poms! You call 25 hot! 25 is a lovely temperature here. What I would call perfect. Anything under 20 is too cold for me, then I start whinging about how cold it is...funny that I like the snow though and don't find it as cold at zero as I do at 17 degrees!

You aren't alone. Here in Texas, except for those sun loving lizards who go out and bask in that cancer causing sunshine, the rest of us complain as it gets hotter and hotter! But while I don't complain about cold, I do complain about ice!

I can't stand ice either. This winter wasn't so bad but last winter..well, I don't like "talking" about it to be honest, it really was horrible, so I understand your dislike of ice too. I can't understand why some people have to sunbathe as soon as they see the sun, no matter what time of year it is. Mum's neighbour has been known to sunbathe in her bra (and knickers lol) and it's only been about 10 degrees C. Nutcase!

That's what it is like where I live too. We complain when it was cold and we complain when it is hot. Unfortunately I am very guilty of complaining about the weather the most. Just last week I was complaining because it was too cold and this week it has been so hot. Right now and it is already evening it is like 32C. Way too hot. It was like that yesterday too. I hope it cools down before tomorrow because we are having a big barbecue and I hate to be out when it is so hot.

32C is way too hot for me too. 25 is just about my limit but 20 is perfect! I hope it cools down for you, at least just a bit so it's more comfortable. It's set to do that here..but go dull so I guess I'll start complaining about that once it happens!

The feeling is exactly normal with a lot of other people and not only the Brits. We always complain, don't we? Enjoy the sunshine and the summer heat for now. Some members of my family who are in now residing in Manchester are on the point of boarding the plane to France. They just love the summer months. Since they have been used to the summer heat in our own country, the warm in UK right now is something that they find more comfortable than the below zero degrees temperature of winter. I hope that someday in the future, I may be able to experience the heat and cold in your country. A few years from now and I think I will be myLotting with you from your very own country. See you then.

No you guys across the pond are not the only ones and in fact I was just thinking this myself here in Eastern PA. I was just noticing the odd prickly feeling that you get on your back when it gets hot and humid. And of course I started getting annoyed at the weather. Then I had to stop myself. It has only been really warm for a week and I wait all winter long for summer. Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year and it's the time I'm most happy. I realized I was just complaining about the cold weather not too long ago and how much I hate it. So I got the scissors and cut it out quick and now I am concentrating on enjoying this beautiful weather the entire season if it kills me.

You'd love it here at the moment then! Mind you, it's cooling down now at around 5pm so it's nice. Breezy too which reminds me of where I used to live (at a coastal town) so I'm not moaning today, for a change!

Hi! Extreme weather conditions make us feel uneasy. Here in Delhi, right now we are facing scorching heat and it is pretty difficult to go out during day time. Like-wise when it is extreme winter conditions, we also do not like that and wish that it should turn to summer months immediately. We are restless creatures who are not happy in any of the situation (read weather)

I can understand your uneasiness while facing the heat as you are not used to it. You are lucky that you do not need to face temperature of 40 degree centigrade and above (like us).

"Uneasy" is a very good word, I like that. Us Brits feel uncomfortable in the heat, purely because we're just not used to it. Wanting the heat and getting it are two different things as it's never what we envisaged. It's been a bit cooler today though, especially after tea, so I'm happier now.

That is the thing about people in general, we're never going to be happy about the weather. Oh today it's too hot, too cold, too much sun, not enough sun, the winds not blowing enough, the winds blowing too much, its raining too much, its really not really enough, really can we really go on? It is something that happens all over the world. Granted sometimes it is different people complaining. The weather is just something that for all is a talking point and really a complaining point as well. When the weather seems to change the other day, we are going to really start complaining about what it did. Back and forth, back and forth, around and around, we will never be satisfied for any reason whatsoever. All around the world, that is the one thing that many seem to have in common. Unable to be pleased by the weather.

At least it's lovely today as it's gone cooler..but the sun's still out. No doubt I'll moan when it goes cloudy 'cos it will eventually. A good example of what you're on about, actually.

It's the same thing here in america. We all complain when it's too cold and we want it warmer, then when it's hot, we want the cold weather back. What I would really love is a happy medium somewhere. It would be nice if it were maybe 70 or 75 degrees without humidity. That would be ideal.

As I see it,people outside UK also have such a thought.I doubt if it has something to do with human's disposition in which grass is always greener on the other side of the fence or never happy where one is.But then again,We think nothing of 25 degrees C.Over here,The maximum temperature we reached in former years was around 40 degrees C.

there are 4 seasons in my place but summer is very hot and winter is very cold. I often say...wish it is winter now while it is summer and wish it is summer while it is winter... Its not the sun we complain about its mainly the humidity that comes with it. I have loved the past week got more done in the garden than I have done in years lol. Its when we go in our over insulated houses settle down to goto sleep and feel like we sleeping inside a oven thats what I moan about, its actually more nicer to sleep outside but with the rat population in my garden I think I will stay indoors.

Oh dear, how come you've got rats in your garden?
29 May 12
I live near a nature reserve and park and all kinds of wildlife seem to live round here badgers, owls, foxes etc etc. The cats seem to find them and chase them round the garden. Last night I screamed like a little girl when I had a load of Cockchafers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockchafer) massive flying beetles attacking me in the garden attaching themselves to my hair not good for my male ego lol. Forgot that although its cooler outside at night brings out more than rats in the garden roll on September for the millions of daddy long legs that hatch around that time.

Yes you are right.......now a days weather is playing funny games with us. Me too going from same kind of feelings. Infact my feelings change every 10 minutes.....I feel hot I put on fan, then I am so cold , I look for something hot to cover myself. In another 10 minutes, I throw away the cover and put on fan in full speed.I checked with my friends and this is happening with many people. Lets also not forget our human nature, we are never satisfied with what we have.....always want something different...and when we get it , again we complain and look for something else. There is not end to this process....

I know exactly what you mean, but Saturday, with a blazing sun and not a bit of breeze, I tried to stop myself from moaning too much, thinking about how I moaned about the rain.. I went outside to do some things in the garden and after 10 minutes, could stand it no longer and came back indoors. And, you guessed it, I had a moan.. Better on Sunday, though.. A nice breeze blowing from the east, that made things much more comfortable, so got a touch of vitamin D from the sunshine.. _Derek

It's a miracle my John doesn't get ricketts, as he's not an outdoor person at all. You did make me laugh, mentioning sticking the hot sun for 10 minutes, then coming back in again. Mum told me the exact same thing when I rang her up yesterday. She had every intention of doing some gardening on Saturday but she couldn't stand the heat either..and that's in Blackpool where it normally gets a nice bracing wi..er..breeze lol. It's set to get cooler though so make sure you raid your wardrobes for a jumper!

I have noticed that we are always wanting the opposite to what we have in life, however I feel that, for me at least, the weather was absolutely right this weekend for the first time in a long time. It wasn't too hot or too cold, and it was just the right temperature to mean that we were able to sit outside in the garden without having to wear a jacket or without worrying that we were going to get burned by the sun either. It is a little hotter than that today, which is not too good, but I would much prefer for it to be like this than cold like it is in the winter months.

My favourite day of the few sunny days we have had was definitely Friday as there was a nice cooling breeze. After that it got too hot for me to sit outside for any length of time. It was nice seeing blue sky though as I LOVE cloudless, blue skies. You are right about "not worrying about having to wear a jacket" as I was a bit sick of wearing my wooly cardigan in the middle of May. It was quite liberating putting it back in the wardrobe and I'm hoping I don't have to take it out again until at least October. Fat chance!

Hi Janey, Well, it's always like that with human beings. Not just the weather, but almost everything, I guess. People always want just what they don't have. It's just human nature. I've heard kids sighing desperately for holidays during school, and then, when the holidays do arrive, they get so bored they wish they were back in school. Well, I like to adapt to whatever the weather is, because it can get uncomfortable. If it's too cold, I just turn on the heater, and if it's too hot, the air conditioning.

No such thing as air-conditioning in homes in the UK. They probably DO exist but it will be rare, which is probably why we moan whenever it's hot at night. Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often which is why we don't have air-con in the first place, I should think. It's common in shops and offices though.
