Germany started their campaign brightly beating Portugal 1-0. Mario Gomez headed home the winning goal in the second half to seal the match for Germany. The match was dominated by Germany till the goal with Portugal generally happy with defending. But once the goal went in the game changed its complexion significantly with Portugal attacking relentlessly and twice went close scoring the equalizer. The million dollar question is why did they not play in that manner from the beginning!! Anyhow a good start for Germany in the group of death. Cheers! Ram

Good start for Germany though I think a draw would be the fair result for this game, since Portugal had 3-4 great chances to score a goal. It was another good match though in a very good start for the tournament so far :)

I think the problem for the Portuguese was that till the German goal they were happy to sit back. When they started attacking suddenly they created 3-4 good chances to score. Cheers! Ram

I think one of their main problems is that Ronaldo is usually fantastic down the wings, but for Portugal he needs to play a more central role. I think he is not very effective when he plays in that role. Cheers! Ram

Possibly if they did we might be talking about a different result but I think that they have a problem in their attacking line even though they have nani and ronaldo in the wings the cf they got aren't that good. It's a little weird for this Portuguese generation of national team that they have so much talent in every position, Pepe,B.Alves, F.Coentrao in the defensive line, R.Meireles,J.Moutinho,M.Veloso in the midfield, C.Ronaldo,Nani,Quaresma for the wings and in the CF position they still have the mediocre H.Postiga, the mediocre S.Varela and H.Almeida who is not in his best form after leaving Budeslinga.

I agree, Portugal should have been attacking from the start ,they had nothing much to lose as Germany were favorites. Attempt at 87th minute must have shaken most of German supporters. To be fair Germans were also not on top of their game either, they have to lift their game and they gave a window to Portugal to cause yet another upset like the one we saw earlier in Denmark vs Netherlands match.I am not a football expert but as a naive fan my personal view is that Portugal were playing for a draw.

I agree with GRV. Whenever Portuguese went forward, the Germans were unsure. So they more or less underestimated themselves. Cheers! Ram

because paulo bento is afraid of germany attack.. thats why they put the defend tactics..it is similar with tactics of Mourinho...

Hmm, in that case we can say that Portuguese underestimated themselves.

:) Last world cup would have been really painful for you. Do you still have nightmares of Gareth Barry laboring to catch up with the young Muller for the third German goal. :) Cheers! Ram

we make similar question i think why the coach did not play petr mertasacker? i think it easier step now for germany if they can beat Denmark in their next match.. and it is not good for Portugal because they still meet against Netherlands which need 2 winning because lost from Denmark

I have watched Per Mertesacker at Arsenal last season. And I must say that his best is behind him now. He is now more of a liability to the team with his slow movements. So I think what Germany played yesterday was their best combination at the back. But they still need to get some time to gel together. Cheers! Ram

You are right mate. With players like Ronaldo, Nani, and Meriles they should look to attack rather than defend. They are totally a different team in attack. They are a good side but are not playing to their strengths. They have their tactics wrong and should get them right against Holland and Denmark.

Exactly my point. But I guess with this loss now they do not have much more option to defend and probably they will now go on the attack. Cheers! Ram

Portugal tried to stifle the German attack and it works until Gomez pop up with the goals. From then onwards, Portugal had no choice but to go for it. With the likes of Ronaldo and Nani, they have enough firepower to trouble the opposition. As pointed out, they should have started with this in mind, especially when the German defense ain't the strongest to begin with.

Looking at the way the tournament has panned out so far, none of the teams are looking as clear favorites. All teams seem to be evenly matched. Only Russia blitzed away in their opener. As I speak Spain and Italy are tied 1-1 after 67 minutes. Cheers! Ram
