In order to widen my vocabulary, All I do is to read books, read novels, technical books, magazines, then at my side is a dictionary, for words I do not understand. I would be able to understand it by just browsing the dictionary. It is so hard to understand what you are reading if you would miss some part of the piece just because you don not know what is means.

Your response greatly improves the discussion of topic at hand. I think context clues likewise help in widening one's vocabulary. Dictionary use can also be replaced with the computer itself. Analyzing the word in relation with other words in the sentence is getting its meaning through context clues.

Reading a lot can help enhance the vocabulary. When you read, keep a dictionary beside you and try to use that word in a sentence. Someone also suggested that you try to remember one word from the dictionary everyday. Keep that word in mind the entire day and even try to use it during conversations.

I'm quite puzzled why this topic has remained unanswered for more than 48 hours. Now you're the first one and may I thank you for doing so. In a scale of 1 to 5, if 1 is the highest, allow me to rate you 1.1 for your reply. Is that okay for you?

I was told that reading the newspaper everyday would help improving my vocabulary. I tried that about a year ago and based on my experience, that is really helpful. Before, I don't think people could understand fully what I wanted to say. I also tried reading articles online. I have encountered some words that I really don't understand so I will just look for their meaning. Having internet connection is such a great help since I don't have to look for a dictionary anymore to look for the meaning of a word. That is very helpful. Looking for the synonyms of the word would also help widen our vocabulary.

I think all the things that you've mentioned help a lot in improving our command of the English language, be it writing or talking vocabulary. Yes, I am with you that reading any printed words, looking for the meaning of difficult words really helps. And it's a fact that if one is truly desirable in reaching the pinnacle of everything, there must lots of reading, writing and talking. The activities desired must be made habitual every day if possible so that when writing and talking the words will come right away from our mouth or its there right in our mind. We don't exert effort in putting food to our mouth and why is it that we its always correct? Because of constant practice.
