Minced Beef And Pork - Actually A Good Combination!

Minced beef and pork sounds disgusting, initially but John bought me a big tray of it from the supermarket so I thought I'd give it a go and see what I could rustle up with it. Now, normally I would use lean beef mince for a Shepherd's Pie which - ironically, should have lamb in it but I never use lamb, always beef, just to confuse everybody! Well, the beef and pork mince worked brilliantly because the pork gave the mixture a little bit of fat in it, which improved the taste. Beef on its own can be too lean, therefore very dry so my guess is this is the reason why the butchers at Morrison's have started using this clever combination. It's very cheap too. With the rest of the beef and pork mince I made a pie with a pastry topping on it. Again, I have tended to use only lean beef mince for this. The pie was brilliant as the meat never got too dry. It's great for freezing too, as most pies are of course. Tomato puree is put in the meat for a bit of a "kick" but I left Worcestershire Sauce out as I didn't want to push it, flavour-wise. Have you ever bought something you thought may be a bit naff but has actually proved (as in this case) a rip-roaring success? I do hope so! We've got some more of this mince so I'm looking forward to using it again.

Well, I can't use that because its mixing the meats, and I can't mix my meats because of my allergies...

Its easier to tell you what I'm NOT allergic to. Lemons, carrots (and I may be allergic to them now), plums and oats.

How do you know you are allergic..do you get strange reactions to certain foods?

I must say, it is an unusual combination, even for me. It's not something I'd do myself, put it that way. I'm just relieved that it tastes good. How many allergies have you got? It must be a right pain at times.

I rather like those mixed meats when ground as they have a different and interesting flavour. I agree with you about the wonders of a ground meat with a little more fat. I don`t use tomatoes in Shepherds pie (only fried diced onions, hard boiled eggs and black olives) and I have never done it with lamb as that meat is very expensive where I live.

Fortunatly I don`t think of the live animal while eating. I love dearly rabbits as pets, but I also love a rabbit stew. I buy it in such way that I don`t recall how it was alive though.

I don't eat a lot of lamb because I like seeing them run around in fields but I confess to eating some the other day..and it was nice too.

Beef-pork mixture is also good in a homemade chili. Some of our groceries sell it together in the same package. I can also see it being used in pizza making along with the other things you think of when you think of pizza....calzones, stromboli, spaghetti meat sauce....stuff like that. I think you did good.

Thank you. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about it at first but hubby has bought another tray of it from Morrison's so he must like it as well.

Unfortunately, this meat mixing has become commonplace across Europe. For someone who doesn't eat pork, it is a huge problem. Trying to find unadulterated beef mince is reaching the limits of the possible! So, expect a rise in heart attack cases! I remember when cows had fat on them - must be getting old!

I blame the celebrity chefs telling us that we should "only" use lean beef. Yeh, right, AND sacrifice the taste of it at the same time.

Thats great that tou found they go so well together. I love it also. Yes they do complement each other. That meat pie sounds wonderful. I'll be right over. Save some for me!

Your discussion is actually making me very hungry! These two meats and now in combination sounds delicious! Yes, indeed I have bought many things that then just got better with usage. Lots of things. But I'm sure it won't come close to your pies! I'm cold and hungry, so forgive my drooling :)

I make my own pastry as well. Only when it's puff pastry do I use the pre-packed version. It WOULD warm you up too, my friend.

I actually think that beef and pork are a good combination....when left alone in a paddock as a cow and a pig that is! I don't think that mincing them is a good idea, nor would they! But that is probably for another discussion.
