Starting Groups and getting people to join

How many of you have done this? have you had much success with it? What are some tips and tricks that you have for doing this?

I had started a private group to all of my family members who lives in very near to us. Really starting an group is really easy and it provides us to share what ever we need within the only members in it. I and my family members used to share all our family photos there and we exchange our comments on it.
